Rock Dust Light Star at No.7 in the UK charts
Rock Dust Light Star debued at No.7 in the UK album chart this week, and White Knuckle Ride got to No.39 on downloads alone without a proper release!
Could the marketing have been better? Didnt seem to be much of a structure single wise... _________________ Fave Jamiroquai songs:
1. Space Cowboy (Stoned Again)
2. Time Wont Wait
3. Revolution 1993
4. Hot Tequila Brown
5. Just Another story |

posted this over at funkin just now:
bad choice of singles, weak videos, nonexistent promotion ahead of time, ugly album cover, lack of general hype in the music scene..not even many reviews of it currently. maybe sony did some things the right way despite what jay thinks..or maybe this band isn't serving up what the public wants right now, for better or worse. |

I think this just demonstrates a mixture of poor (or lack of) promotion and the fact that the British public seems to possess a strange general choice for music. I know it's teenyboppers and things, but the notion of more people buying Cheryl Cole's album than Jamiroquai's album in the UK (over 60 million people) just baffles me!
Charts mean nothing though these days. The novelty has worn off! _________________ 'This is the world he wants, pray for the brave and the young...' |

Only the ex Ashley Cole's wife. That's all.

From Billboard:
Euro Chart
"Rock Dust Light Star," Jamiroquai's first release since transferring from Sony to Mercury/Universal, debuts at No. 4 overall. Its best start is at No. 1 in Holland, followed by No. 2 in France and Switzerland, No. 6 in Austria, No. 7 in both the United Kingdom and Germany and No. 10 in Wallony. |

Are the chart positions so much different from the Dynamite album?
Dynamite entered the German charts at no. 6-RDLS at no. 7 so no big deal.
Chart positions are not that important-they are relative. The sold albums/downloads matter. Besides charts can be mainpulated very easily-I wondered if Simon Cowell bought up Cheryl Cole's albums to get her a high chart position (lol)?
Is it really a lack of promotion? Jay appeared in a lot of TV and radio shows-I'm sure he did his bit.
I still like to think that people buy albums because of the music and not because of videos or album covers.
Besides the music channels rarely show music videos any more but dating shows and stupid reality TV. So videos are not as important than they used to be.
Maybe nowadays touring and live shows are more important for promotion than expensive videos? |

I think this album doesn't have the kind of singles that are massive hists nowadays.
The album is great, I love it, is really quality music. to reach the firsts position mostly mean not to focus on the music but to write hits, sometimes hits are not very related to quality.
See Gaga, as example, her hits are not the kind of music we would like to see from Jamiroquai, right? |

Thanks Diego!
They were number 2 on the previous couble of albums but the overview is not that bad, if you consider that they totally lost the respect and admiration from their former biggest public (UK). I also expected more sales from Germany. At least France, Switzerland and Holland are doing great.
Unfortunatelly music has changed a lot and artists have to target "Music made for clubs" if they want to be successful - just like Black Eyed Peas have done.
Fortunatelly Jay Kay is already rich and doesn't need to be much upset with the charts. That's not the case of Mercury.
here's the full text:

First-week U.K. sales are 34,000. The band's last studio release for Sony, 2005's "Dynamite," had two weeks at No. 2 across Europe, and "High Times: Singles 1992-2006" had one week at No. 2 the following year." _________________ Fernando Freire |

Sometimes I think things started to go downhill in the UK when Jay was dragged into this whole yellowpress tabloid thing. He was never much in the tabloids before he had a certain girlfriend. His violent intermezzos with paparazzis probably didn't gain him much respect either. |
