Going through some tracks for the first time in a long time. Most of what I wrote was based on memory so im hearing new things and stuff I didn't pick up the first time around. Once I’ve gone through all the tracks again then the Influences list can be finalised...

The lead guitar sounds like Change (Heaven of my Life). There is a “whoop whoop whoop” sound in the background that is familiar from the early 80's. It came out at the same time as (This beat is mine) by vicky D.

Feels So Good
The Air Hostess style vocalisation at the start reminds me of the intro of Skyy's (Arrival).
You get the "wooshing" of the wind as well. This is one possible bit of inspiration for the beginning of the track.

Alright.
Listening to the track again this is Candido as much as Idris and probably more so.
It truncates the intro rather like Little L truncates the ending of I wanna be your Lover.
I forgot all about candido until I listened to alright again. This is Candido alright! So that means Larry Graham didn't invent this Bassline after all Save me is 1976, this is 1970 I think or maybe not. Lots of these bassline are from James Brown.

listening again I think part of it is a take on Brit Funk legend Phil Fearon. He made this sound popular in the mid 80's. But there were others doin the Latin groove. Phil was the former lead singer of London band Kandidate.
His track (head over heels) provides some of the female vocals on Cosmic Girl.

Rapheal Cameron (Funk Town USA).

Cameron was one of Randy Muller’s acts alongside Skyy, Brass Construction and BT Express. He had a great voice but disappeared after one or two albums like so many people back then. The hilarity in the intro is a nod to Parliament's (Aqua Boogie) 1978. That track was one of the most important grooves in Funk history. @ About 45 seconds in you will hear what was essentially the birth of synth Funk as we know it. You should be able to pick out the guitar intro to Little L in there as well @ 4.59.

sychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop! Sir Nose devoid of funk was the villan in Funkadelic folklaw. He had a long nose and tried to stop people listening to the Funk!

I might add that Stevie is really the originator of Synth Funk as we know it. Parliament just funked up the sound and took it to another level. Bernie Worrel's keyboard sound is legendary.

Actually I lived through it, but here near Detroit. I think we have different perspectives is all. I think our Funk Movement was more Rock Driven, Testosterone Driven. And it sucked that Detroit and Chicago killed Disco –I remember it. My mom and brother carried a D.R.E.A.D. card (Disco is dead)!
I think of some of the most famous musicians from my area: Stevie Wonder, Iggy Pop, Aretha Franklin, Eminem, MC5, Jack White, and well we like to think George Clinton's from Detroit  but these are musicians that have this chutzpah -something different than anybody else, and are all linked kinda to their own genre. Original. Now Motown was fabulous, but they put plenty of effort into "blending in" rather than standing out, coming across professionally and entertaining in order to crossover. And used the innovative approach of "Payola" to get the records played, all credited to Berry Gordy, Jr. But this is where I am from.
And yes I've been to England for a couple of days to see Jamiroquai once. I saw some kids breakdancing to Hip hop in the street! Awesome.
My perspective, CHIC’s Nile Rogers who produced Bowie’s Let’s Dance is so Rock/Pop to me… completely different from CHIC. But it sold Millions, especially with the advent of MTV. I would never call that album Funk, and certainly Madonna isn’t Funk!! We literally would laugh at that here.
I don’t think Jamiroquai are Acid Jazz- I’ve seen them labeled as that. I agree with you, not really a real genre. But what I do think is many genres have merged to sort of make their own, and they come up with names like Neo Soul or New Jack.
Let’s take a look at The Blues; originally they come from certain regions from as early as the 19th or 18th century U.S. -Robert Johnson classic Delta Blues. Blues has a trademark chord progression of 12 bar blues (Ex- I IV and V’s) and Robert Johnson is authentic Blues. Ex-song “Crossroads”. *And he lives the Blues. And the records are recorded in a recording device on the back of some producer’s truck, and it doesn’t make it mainstream until Elvis covers it. That’s the Blues.
I know you had a Blues revival in UK as well in the ‘70’s. Now you get Clapton, and he’s maybe as Blues as you get, but he mixes too. But there is a difference between Clapton (Led Zepp & Stones) and Robert Johnson –maybe the purity of the Blues –raw and empty. I guess I see this in Funk too. (I’m digging a hole here).
And the great thing is to see how Blues kinda leads into Jazz, and jazz into R&B, and Blues into Rock n’ Roll…It’s all related and today to me is just a merge of those mentioned. And songs like Alicia Keys’ “Fallin” comes out, it’s so Bluesy and good, but I’d never call it “The Blues” because it would genred as R&B, a merged genre.

Totally agree with you, exactly what I’m trying to say. Amen James Brown as the original and should be called the GodFather of Funk! And I love Jamiroquai and Rose Royce –exactly all your genres are like micro genres stemming off the Macro Funk. But when you Brits (or people at Jami) say “they’re Funk” I politely snicker.
And the Term Rock n' Roll meant rocking and rolling as in sex, but it seems more fitting to Funk! |

Well in terms of digging holes the casual observer might say you've been trying to dig one from the outset. I however have no intention of climbing in there with you or indulging you any further.
I'm here to bring positive energy and lift spirits. I'm here to bring closure to Jamiroquai fans who are nostalgic for the sound of their youth. Jamiroquai gave me back the 1970's in a way I never thought possible. In a round about way I hope to give their fans back the 1990's by reuniting them with familiar grooves and then some. You might not wish to hear it but rest assured many others will.
Just one point. I never said Madonna was Funk I said Nile Rogers worked with her. Jam and Lewis worked with the Human League. Duran Duran and ABC were both on Soul Train and none of them were true Funk bands.
As for the rest I think we can let others decide which one of us is the genuine article.

Hey man, I really appreciate all the work you put into your recommendations. Do you have any modern jazz/funk bands to recommend as well? I'm still checking out links. Never even heard of Candido before yesterday. |

You will recognise some familiar strings over the Nile Rogers guitar solo that runs through CHIC's (You can get by if you try) @ 3.15 onwards.
The raise in tone @03.25 “ You know this boogie is for real...”
Towards the end of the track reminds me of Patrice Rushen (Look up) @ 0155. Another recommendation (Haven’t you heard) also by Patrice Rushen.

Is on the 12” single version of The Brothers Johnson (The Real Thing) I believe. I have the Album but not the single which I haven’t heard since 1981!
George Duke's (Brazilian love affair) might also be the origin of it.

I'll tell you why you're in the Sky.....
The “tingalingaling” intro lead guitar over the Isaac Hayes bassline was a favourite of Rick James (Super Freak 12' version) Cameo, Mantra, Stone City, BT Express and others. It was one of the hallmarks of hardcore Funk bands and goes back to James Brown. I will hunt doen a few examples.
Towards the second half @0.50 “You see I know I’m blessed celestially”... “
What I interpret as The Brothers Johnson who's strings which have been there throughout the track (except for when what I hear as Silver Convention's appear in the chorus) get louder and add more atmosphere.”Don’t ask me why I'm in the sky”
(Fly Robin Fly) by Silver Convention "up up to the Sky" is maybe another explanation.

I used to play Caught Up immediately after Soul Education. Its the natural part 2. Then I would stick on Flying High by the Commodores.

*There is a live version of Soul Education which uses a different intro. I recognise it but can't recall who did it. It is however someone already mentioned like Ronnie Laws or Lonnie Liston smith. The words “I'm stepping out so cut me loose” is I think on the first or second Johnny Gill album. Soul Education is a stunning piece of Funk.

On even deeper listening I think the groove I was looking for is (Reaching) by Leroy Burgess. I think “We are the Sons of the sun of the morning sky” became “I am the wind, I am the sea, I am the sun...” I think some of that track may have also been inspiration for parts of Travelling without moving. It has his feel to it in a sense.

The more I hear it the more I remember but frustratingly I can't pin it down. The start and parts of the song are so familiar. Something in the bassline reminds me of Dexter Wansell's (I will never forget) although that’s a disco era track. The Randy Jackson track is a late 80's but Dynamite is an early 80's sound. The female vocals suggest disco era CHIC or their sound alikes in the post disco era. Change, Unlimited Touch, Inner Life and High Fashion for example.
Some Pop bands were crossing over and doing this type of groove at the time as well.
Other possibilities/recommendations;
It could be from Britfunk band Shakatak. Mr moon is in part a nod to one of their other sounds, although other Britfunk bands like Atmosfear and the then newly formed Incognito were doing similar grooves. Their tracks below are when they were experimenting with the electro sound. Fortunately for us they switched back to the Funk unlike Freeze who lost most of their fans With a.e.i.o.u and then disappeared.
These grooves are not the same but similar. Dynamite would have been released in this early 80's era....

Other Funk bands who liked that vocoder sound in the early 80's were Atlantic Star and Midnight Star. Because of the harmonies involved it's more likely to be from High fashion or Unlimited Touch. Then again it could be neither. The way they say “Dynamite...Dynamite” against the flow of the groove if that makes any sense, is what the girls of High fashion and Change used to do. Although CHIC were the originators of that style. Maybe it's just a take on "Dancin Dancin" from My feet keep dancin by CHIC.
Listen to the way the girls sing these words in a similar fashion.....

Thanks. I was a bit surprised by the amount views. I expected a couple of hundred not over 3000 in a couple of weeks. Someone’s feeling the Funk out there for sure. No I don't really know any modern bands. As I alluded to previously, practically everything I listen to when I get the chance I’ve heard before. It's just Jazz funk and Soul being called new names. There's still plenty of stuff in the 70's and 80's for you to discover enough to last a lifetime.

Well OK.
Peoples Funk is my command but Automaton isn't The Funk.
It looks like they are continuing along rdls lines with electro pop so it's not really my groove. It's the type sound I would have expected to hear on the radio in the first half of the 80s. Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Howard Jones and those already mentioned as rdls recommendations. The way its sung is familiar and it's based on someone in the early 80's UK synth pop world. Influences? well I hasten to add my knowledge is limited when it comes to this sound. The overall feel I get is late 70's original Electro (Kraftwerk) mixed with early 80's Electro/Synth Pop.

Yes I caught it. There is also a small element of Dave Roach's (Running with the river) in the groove and 80's pop band Soft Cell jumped into my mind whilst listening to automaton. They might provide some answers. Ultravox and the Pet Shop boys after that. I place the intro firmly in the 1970's. I'm sure there was a Kraftwerk song with the lyrics I'am or we are, as well.
