THE FUNK KEEPS COMING!
Maybe one more then we update and complete the list.

If I like it I just do it

The ending comes from (Devotion) by Nomad. (Signed, sealed, delivered is another Stevie track from the same era but (Anything you want me to do is closer) and probably the origin.

Music of the mind

Pleasure (Theme for Moonchild)

Sadly Pleasure broke up after this album. That spiritual sound of theirs was sorely missed in the 80’s. The Dazz Band and Breakwater tried to fill the gap but the harmonies were never quite the same.

Snooze you loose

If the intro vocal is done in the style of 3rd World then the bassline might be a take on Sting and the Police. They used to fuse Reggae and Rock together sometimes with fantastic results and thoughtful lyrics like this...

I hadn’t heard this track for ages. Listening back it's Latin (Bossa Nova) so the same tracks on corner of the Earth apply like;

Some more early 80's Electrophonic Phunk. When you listen to all the recommendations for this track you can see which era they were aiming for on feels so good.

Little L
This groove keeps one foot in disco-land but brings in the piercing synth of the early 80's. Little L belongs right here. It would have charted between 1980/ 1983 when we were jamming to stuff like this. Earlier Brit Funk Tracks like (Grooveline) by Heatwave and (Can you feel the force) by The real thing were instrumental in this sound. Everyone was fascinated listening to this new “Electrified” sound. People talk about the Disco era but this time was just as exiting if not more with all the new sounds that were about There was something about the power of the synth that hypnotised you and made the whole club literally vibrate! Even the the lighting somehow felt different and would pulsate with the music in an amazing way that is difficult to describe. They were incredible times....

Electro. After a while we went back to calling Electrophonic Funk just plain Funk again.
This was around the time of Breakdance the Movie in 1984. From then on the name ‘Electro’ was reserved for the hardcore stuff. Exactly the same occurred here and in the US. There was never any difference. We wore the same stuff like the US cavalry hats and the white gloves, Jammed to the same grooves and plastered the walls with graffitti just like in the US. Hip hop godfather Kool Herc learned his craft in the UK back in the 1970’s. The Jamaican sound boxes were already part of British culture going back to the 60’s.

Daft Punk fans can find the origins of most of their sound from this era. From Zapp, Tyrone Brunson and other electro funk bands like Man Parish, The Jozun Crew etc, from the hardcore Electro sound that B boys used to breakdance to as well as from the disco era. Absolutely all of their sounds have been done before in the 1970's and 1980's. Kraftwerk, Moroder, Cerrone and so on.
Nothing of Daft Punk is original including the crash helmets. Their grooves/mixes are not to be compared to the clever Jazz Funk re-constructions of Jamiroquai.

The Brit Funk sound on Jamiroquai tracks?

There is very little in the way of what we would describe as a “British sound” on Jamiroquai Albums. At least on their Funk albums. I could make an argument for Runaway, Mr Moon and Don’t give hate chance. Perhaps also journey to Arnemland because It has the Sahara groove running through it but none of those sounds are exclusively ours. It’s mostly all American Funk save the odd bit of Latin samba/bossa nova.

Mr moon sounds like the sparse moody UK bass slapp Funk of 79/81 some of which I have already recommended, but that's really the Roy Ayres sound and other Americans were doing it long before us. UK bands didn't have the huge budgets that their American counterparts had access to so a lot of Britfunk sounded sparse and under-produced. Nevertheless we turned it into an art form and I for one like the raw rough and ready stuff. (Love So fine) by Sahara was a major hit as was (Tell me how it feels) by 52nd Street. Both were British Funk bands well known to 80's US funksters and the groove was similar but that’s an old Funk rift going back to the 1970's. The Mac Band did a similar groove on (Roses are red).
Having covered most styles of Funk I think they finally chose to cover the Britfunk sound on Dynamite. Both Runaway and Don't give hate a chance have a Brit Funk feel to them although this sound isn't exclusively ours.

Don't give hate a chance

Why British? Because it takes me back to the late 70's when the Olympic Runners became world famous thanks to their track the (B**ch) which was a Film staring Joan Collins. Rod Stewart was making a name for himself in America at the time with (Do you think I’m sexy). People call it a disco track but it’s Funk.

I would say Rod Stewart and Prince start the track then handover to the Olympic Runners at the chorus when that lead guitar kicks in. I have to give the rhythm guitar to Prince though via (sexy dancer). The intro is from (Wide Glide) by Fatback. The James Bond theme for Goldfinger is the origin of it.

Runaway

That haunting keyboard sound of LOTW'S Famous faces. There was a certain sadness in the British sound in 1980/81. I call it the post disco melancholy. Looking back I guess we all realised the crazy disco party was over. A recession was looming, unemployment was rising and Britain was in political turmoil as was the USA. It was an unsure time and the threat of Nuclear war was very very real. We had public information films at night telling us what to do in the event of a nuclear strike. Interestingly we can hear the “ha ha ha ” of Laurie Andersons apocalyptic song (oh Superman) in the background of Runaway which gives us another confirmation of the era they were aiming at. They were both released around the same time .(Stepping out) by Kool and the Gang and (I’ve had Enough) by EWF were also in the charts at the same time and they also have the same melancholy atmosphere. When those two bands sound sad you know the world is in trouble. By the mid 80's the economy had improved and most were back on a high again. Stop snoring.

Travelling without moving

So at the intro we’ve got the car from (Burning Rubber) by the Gap Band
In the chorus I can hear what sounds like a hint of Gwen Mccrae.

That groove also works as the start of Feels so good which just about covers that track.
I think some of the synth comes from (Head) by Prince.

Gwen Mccrae (90 of me is you)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJHMAGm7uC4

You are my Love

There's more going on under the bonnet or hood than I realised. Listening again..

I couldn't place the intro with pin point accuracy. I thought It might be Stevie. Apart from Quincy and Marvin there is a lot more going on In this song. The guitar rift and the way that it’s played is familiar. It could be the Isley Brothers again but above the groove sounds like the bright horns of pleasure.
(Plastic people & What Is Slick) by Pleasure. (Get to the feeling) might work as well

Pleasure (Plastic people)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzHrHR3XNlk

Pleasure (What is slick)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d7LY5y-si4

* The intro of (What is slick) is looped on Manifest destiny

The bassline leading up to the chorus where Ronnie Laws (Almost there) starts, I would say is a take on Pleasure and Nate millers evil bass slapping groove on part of (No matter what). They take some of the keyboard sound with them as well. It's rather like start of Travelling without moving which sounds like a take on Larry Graham's (Pow!) but also without the bass slap. I’m sure there’s something closer though. Another track which contains all these elements.

Pleasure (No Matter what)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAjIOdsxVpU

Something of the groove also takes me back to one version of (Divine Emotion) by Narada Michael Walden in the 80's.

Narada Michael Walden (Divine Emotions)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XCTNi_2AS4

The other version which I liked better could almost have served as an alternative to the Little L intro. Just add the guitar licks in your head. It will work

Narada Michael Walden (Divine Emotions)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnQ23jE-b4E

The bassline we all remember him from was Tonight I’m alright. For my money one of the greatest basslines of the golden year 79/80 and a personal favourite alongside (Music) by one way which I think just about shades it.

Narada Michael Walden (Tonight I'm alright)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVHX5OWXkjE

Al Hudson/One Way (Music)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqu-2sZSNEc

As with many of the ‘80’s artists you can only truly understand him by going back to his old sound. The old Narada is the real Narada.

Narada Michael Walden (Garden of Love)

Narada Michael Walden (The dance of life)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11FW052LgfE

In the Chorus @ “You are my love”, I can hear a hint of the butterfly wings going on in the background or the shuffle groove as some called it. Note. It’s not what the drummers call the shuffle though it probably represents the same thing, a train going down the railway tracks.

That light jabbing of the keyboards was another repeating sounds of the 70's. It made you feel as if you were floating in the disco. CHIC did it fantastically with violins on my feet keep dancin'

Leon Haywood (Don't force it don't push it)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UdhqV3VURo

One Way (You can do it)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzXn9iuqBYU

Here's the shuffle keys done in the moody sound.

Johnny Guitar Watson. (Booty Ooty)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOQn_8NjJSs

This was the disco era JGW but he goes way back to the 1950’s.

Finally there is a hint of the bassline from Lonnie Liston Smiths (Shadows) sounds like a double bass or at least it gives the effect. The keyboards at the end almost match those of you are my love although they are somewhat accentuated.

Lonnie Liston Smiths and the Cosmic Echoes.

D-Train (Keep on) “Say to, yourself this will be mine...”

Another "music of the mind" intro then it's off into Roy Ayres land...

[Roy Ayres/ Ethel Beatty - I know you care]

The Original Cosmic Girl

Oby Onyioha -Enjoy your life

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6kgC-3s7Xg&spfreload=10

There's another closer Latin track for which Cosmic girl follow the template.

Final pieces in the jigsaw..

Where do we go from here.

I missed out headlights the other Whispers track. So it was the Whispers and the Isley Brothers. You know where the bass plucks fit so I don't need to tell you. All that's missing is the bassline which follows @”that's the way love goes” leading up to the shrill trumpet call and Gwen Mc Crae's groove. I can hear a similar track it in my head but can't place it. The Brit Funk London horns on LOTW's (Pete's Crusade) are also a recommendation for that part of the track.

[The Whispers - Head lights]

Where do we go from here belongs in this time frame.

Funktion

The horns at the start of Gwen Mc Crae's (Got to be real) are looped throughout the track. The other horns sound like another a bit of Brit Funk from Atmosfear's (Dancing in outer space). Other than that I still hear it as Vernon Burch/Ojays track.

There are elements from Off the wall album. The laugh sounds like the start of the single and the drum beat sounds like a loop of the intro to (Working day and night). There a Similar drumbeat is on (Disrespect) by the Gap Band. Disrespect was a dig at Prince.

Supersonic=Superstar

I don't think i’ve heard this track from start to finish since it came out. Listening back I think we'll discard Stevie here. I think it's basically Roy Ayres. A combination of (Hey uh what you say c'mon) and (He's a Superstar) the groove is just a millisecond off the Funk. Supersonic brings it back on the one. “He's a superstar” maybe equates to “He's supersonic”? There is something of the very early Level 42 I can't put my finger on and I mean very early when they were still an underground Brit Funk band working pt in that carpet factory. I’m sure there were tracks I heard which didn't make the early tapes album. Or it could just be the lyrics remind me of microkid.
I can hear another track in there somewhere which may come to me. It normally does.

The Bassline could also work for the intro to Bullet but there are closer ones in the 70’s and 80’s. I’ll with stick with EWF (Speed of Love) for now.

Roy Ayres “He's a Superstar”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk1IwYgFnWc

Roy Ayres (Hey uh what you say c'mon)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXKfxXt7lR8

Star Child.

I think it’s a George Duke track not Parliament. It will come to me.

High Times

The synthline on High Times, which for me is based on pleasure, takes the shortest route through Universal Mind. I recognise the Piano keys from somewhere in the 70's but those piano keys go way way back. The second half of tracks Swamp Rat and Sly by Herbie will be of interest.

(Borrowed love) by the SOS band and (Mr Bachelor) by Loose Ends is similar but not exactly the same. That particular groove is Stevie I think.

“Last night” is a sample from Esther Williams.

Herbie Hancock (Swamp Rat)

Herbie Hancock (Sly)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNlm-W3m1qc

Continuing with, Herbie he provides an important piece of the Jigsaw to Capricorn day.

Black Capricorn Day

Herbie Hancock (Spider)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EQlKntLH2o

I think the other part is Roy Ayres.

Still with Herbie, I could see (hang up your hang ups) as the first block in the foundation of Soul Education. That busy chugging in the final chorus then upwards and skywards with the violins maybe.

Hang up your hang ups

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgBrPQCSdW4

Tallulah

I don't recognise it Sounds a bit like Careless Whisper by George Michael. Another London Soulboy who made it big in the US and Worldwide. Really big. It’s a two step groove. Two step is what you hear on Space Cowboy @ “You and I” before Bootsy kicks in again. (Secret rendezvous) by Rene and Angela or (Mademoiselle) by Foxy are two step grooves.

Alright

Final call. Listening closely, very closely I would say there is something of Herb Alpert in the groove. The groove fits like the Brit Funk track (running with the river). The other track I'm thinking of sounds slightly similar to the keyboard sound to Cameo's (Enjoy your life). “Its alright now” sounds like a sample of Eddie Harris. Automaton has the underlying groove of magic man.

Rock/Funk fusion band Red Hot Chilli peppers do a lot of Parliament/Funkadelic stuff.

Spend a lifetime.

Listening back it might be based on Parliament.

I’m missing a few tracks which will come to me and I don’t consider it to be complete, but that’s the bulk of the Jamiroquai Jazz-Funk and Soul discography re-expanded.
There are a few more I already know to add. The summary will come later. I understand Late night tales is the official album of Jamiroquai influences, so this post is my unofficial version. These were the tales of a London Soulhead, so this is The Soulhead Tales! It will most likely appear in a more tidied up version somewhere later, but I created here so it belongs to everyone. This list and the energy I know it has given and will continue to give some of you is yours as much as much as it is mine. I don’t own the Funk. I am just a servant.

Album covers for the Soulhead Tales. The link should work now.

I've now stuck a more tidied up version on a blog which also has a few additions. I might do some more work on it later.

https://soulboytales.wordpress.com/

And if I may let me qualify a statement I made on this post, This is a music forum not a political one, but when I said Britons are celebrating Brexit I didn't mean that we don't like Europe or our fellow Europeans. We're not trying to leave Europe as such. We are trying to leave the E.U. Which we see as a fascist (Non Democratic) state in its infancy. We had and Empire once remember, and so we know when someone is trying to create one.
Those of us who are awake want no part of this new world order.

So thats about it for this thread. I hope you felt the funk and learned something. You should now know what to look for and where in terms of 70's/80's Funk. Some of these songs have been with me for over 40 years and I hope they are with you youngsters for even longer. Spread the groove and brighten up someone's day.

May the Funk be with you for the rest of your life!
