So second time briefly about the gig: it went well, nothing unexpected happened. There has been a great solo in TWM by Sola, but sometimes it seemed to me that the guys were only there physically, not mentally. Jay was wearing this green hat as you can see on the pix, didn’t really talk to the crowd, only mentioned that he’s beaten Simon’s lap record in Top Gear. The sounding was quite hectic, I could hear even the smallest noise from Sola from like 150m distance, but Matt’s sounding was really bad (the Fest is using the best equipment available, but they’re controlling the total Db coming out of the island, so the limiter took back sometimes from the sound. The crowd was huge, 25-30.000 people in front of the stage, haven’t seen so many people before.
My story: I went out to the Fest around 6 p.m, had some drinks with my pals but then a friend of mine called me that he had a good and a bad news. Bad news is we need to get a camera which makes us look like professional photographers, good news is that I could also get a press pass. So I met up with my friend, had a photo machine with us but had no batteries, so we needed to get some. A friend of us provided us with some at 21.20, so we had like 10 minutes until the kick-off. We run to the press zone, fortunately the security guys didn’t notice that one of my passes wasn’t right, so got in safety. Still we had only one machine for the two of us, so I was holding the cam while my friend the bag. So there were we, 50 photographers in a small place, the band starts playin Kids. We were waiting for our round to get in the area (which is between the stage and the crowd) when it turned out that the memory card is full and I also need to find out how to switch off the flash, finally I could find a function and erase some pix. We got in under Seven Days, but before that I tried to shoot some pix with my cell phone from the screen while we were waiting, a security guy came to me asking what I’m doing… He wanted to throw me out, but I managed to convince him that this was only for my private use as a memory, I’m really a photographer… We had 2 tracks to shoot some pix, and under Alright we were forced to leave the area. Since by that time the crowd was too huge we couldn’t make it to get close to the stage, so we gathered at the end of the crowd and watched the show from a big distance. After Deeper Underground we “rushed” to the press area again as we were told that Jay would only decide right after the gig if he wanted to give press conference or not. We’ve been waiting there for like 30 mins when the Sziget media ref came out saying that they couldn’t convince Jay, so no press conf… Most of the people left the place but we stayed there waiting for someone from the band to appear. Derrick finally came out to welcome some of his London neighbours and this is when we caught him, had some photos, signed the booklet I had with myself and had a long chat regarding near and far future. They’ve been rehersing in the past days, making a tune for a future UK show, so they were a bit tired. They’re ready with like 30-35 tracks, 12-13 is going to make it onto the new album. The album is due in spring 2009, will be fully live with brass, etc…We also talked about Stu, praised Paul turner and Jay’s composer abilities, also let him know how much of you is going to be in Ahaus, which gig he’s really looking forward to. Later he needed to left, and no one else from the band came out …. A guy managed to sneak in over the fence, talked to Sola, Matt and Rob, but after being found second time by the security guys, he got some rude words from them. But at least he has the signatures on his monthly mass transport ticket Wink .
Pix are coming later...
