Mysterious ALEX ??? The new bassman...
Just wanted to share some thoughts about the new bassist ALEX...

We still don't know his surname. Some of you are speculating that it could be ALEX KATUNICH from Incubus. It's possible, yes.
But when I heard that his name is ALEX, I thought of another one:

Could it be that the new bassist of Jamiroquai was the Australian Funk Bass player Alex Hewetson?
When Stu left, Mr. Hewetson got a callup to fly to London to tryout for the position in Jamiroquai's lineup. (yeah, I refound that info in the archive of funkin.com)
Maybe he got the job this time??? 2scratchchin

Alex Hewetson has a huge list of performance and recording credits to
his name including "directions in Groove" (d.i.g), Don Burrows, Vince Jones, James Morrison and Savage Garden.
He is called to be one of australias best funk bass players!

Well, tomorrow is the concert in Istanbul. Tomorrow at this time we will know more about it!

I was only thinking loud, I really don't know who will replace Nick. 2no

Alex Hewetson - the new bloke in Jamiroquai???

Very interesting Meike! You could be on to something there...we'll see tomorrow then, but you could be right yeah! This guy looks kinda...hmm, could be a bit like Stu, just give him some xxl pants, and a Warwick Streamer Stage II bass with an Iroqouis blanket design. Wink

Rob

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have to say that I really wonder why and how you came up with that.
Because it's hard to believe you looked that name up, and I can't remember
him being one of those people going up for audition, plus the articles-part
on funkin.com is not online at this moment...hmm...maybe some guy
called Matt gave you a little tip, eh? lol

Hehe...Laughing ... no, Rob, I swear that this is no info of Matt.
I admit that I asked him, but I didn't get an answer.

Try this: Type "ALEX" into the search engine on funkin.com and you will get this message from 1998:

Quote:
A message I read a couple of days ago on the Acid Jazz Mailing List said that Australian Funk Bass player Alex Hewetson (ex d.i.g basser) got a callup to fly to London to tryout for the vacant position in Jamiroquai's lineup. (Sun 18 Oct 1998)

If this is really true, you can call me CosmicHolmes in the future... LOL

lol, yeah maybe I will then! And yeah, I also had a message like that when I typed in the name 'Alex Hewetson' and then as matching word 'Jamiroquai'...So it's got to be him I guess. I wonder though, why they chose Nick back then. Maybe it was cos Nick is a self-taught bassist, and if I read the info about Alex, he's a real schooled kinda bassist. But what makes me really hopeful is that I read somewhere that Alex was described "as good as Marcus (Miller, I suppose!), tastier solos" so that promises something then, eh?

Another thing then, I do wonder Meike, how you got this name "Alex". Funkin.com was the first to come with the news, but didn’t mention this name yet. Then you came with it, and you were getting support from David...sooo, what does that mean? Can you tell me where or who you got the info from?

Well, I am just a cosmic mouse with big ears...2listen ....sorry, Rob, I promised not to tell. 2tapedshut
Maybe someone fooled me and at the end this name isn't true... bigeye ...

I guess they are on stage right now!!! bounce Can't wait to hear any news about the gig!!!

Now, the french and the italian websites are claiming that the new bassist is ALEX KATUNICH, but I doubt that. There is still no confirmation. Not an official one and also no clear hint from the turkish fans.

About the boy Katunich!
Hi all,

This is my first post for a very, very long time - it's good to be back Very Happy

Anyway, I'm really intrigued about the new bass player Alex Katunich (if it is indeed him, it hasn't been confirmed yet Confused ) so I've done some searching on the 'net and come up with some links for y'all to have a look at Smile . Here goes:

http://acg2.fullcoll.edu/FACULTY/GLEN/Students/102tt_fall00-11/adams_dustin/ttgeeks/pages/dirk_pic's.html
For some pictures of Alex aka Dirk in action

http://www.warwickbass.com/basssurvival101/artist_dirk.htm
An interview with Warwick bass - pretty interesting read

http://images.onstagemag.com/files/46/0112incubus.html
Another interview - some bits about halfway down

The main question is will he be a permanent fixture in the Jamiroquai lineup? His roots in bass stem from jazz so it could be a good addition to the band. If you had a say in which bass player should come in to replace Nick (apart from a certain Mr Zender, of course) who would it be?

Here comes another rumour:

I heard that:
The new bassist sounded really great
and it is NOT Alex Katunich
and NOT Alex Hewetson!!!

So who is it then? I'll try to find out and let you know as soon as I can!

Here is another suggestion for a funky bassplayer, and it is also an ALEX... Wink

What do you think about this: Alex Meadows Question Question Question

You can find his name for example on an album called "The light insight" from Colin Blunstone together with Rob Harris (!!!) on guitar.
He was/is (?) also a member of an american groupe called
Electrasy.

So, now I confused you, right? tongue But don't worry, I am confused as well. stoned

Just wanna find out the truth... who can help?? We need an accurate source. Exclamation

apologies for the wrong news, I'm currently not at home so it had been hard for me to get informations about the new bassman. When Jamirosite announced the news of Katunich, I told a friend of mine which can update my site he could put an article on Frenchiroquai, but I still wasn't sure.

Since then, I've learnt Alex Meadows is the good one....... Wink Wink Wink

wtf!
What the hell! I was almost excited with Katunich becoming part of Jamiroquai, but this Meadows guy, come on...I bet he's on the band just for being Rob's friend, not because his bassist skills.

You just have to check his background, he comes from a Rock group...and I thought Jamiroquai had jazz roots, or whatever. Even if he is a skilled bassist, his input to the new album is not going to be jazz neither funk or something similar.

It's absolutely clear that this has been a Rob Harris movement trying to gather his friends in the band (Matt J. was his friend too, isn't he?) and thus driving it to a rock oriented sound, which I personally would hate.

Time will tell, so let's wait for the 6th album...

About New Bassist
(Italiano)

(Inglese)
the Jamirosite stuff don't want to discuss (non so come dire 'scendere a
discussioni') but wont to specify what it was written about the new
bassplayer of Jamiroquai.

in 22/09/2003 it was written in News section:

"From web comes new unconfirmed report about the presumed new bassplayer of
Jamiroquai: his name is Alex Katunich and he is the bassplayer of Incubus".
Signed Seko of Jamirosite.

in 23/09/2003 at 9.48.17 in the Guestbook Seko wrote:

"I'm sorry, but it was not confirmed the real name of the new
bassplayer: Nick has left the group and the new basspleyer's name is Alex...
unfortunately the surname is unknown and there are not pubblished photo to
know who he is (questa frase è terribile, se la fai correggere da qualcuno è
meglio!). The nomination are: Alex Hewetson (Australian Funk Bassplayer) and
Alex Katunich (Bassplayer of Incubus)."

Re: About New Bassist
I truly would like the new bassplayer to be Alex Katunich. Alex is funky, jazz, he does a lot of slap stuff. Mr Meadows, I don't know him, but if he's Rob's friend maybe he's in the band because of it. And I don't like it.
Maybe he's a great bassist, but I don't like when musicians do that.
And if you say that Meadows is a rock bassist... Jamiroquai is pure funky and danceable music, you know it, and I don't know if it'll be good to introduce a rock bassist. He could "break" Jamiroquai's sound (amazing sound as you know) and maybe no, maybe he's amazing and give a new sense to this sound, I don't know, but I still prefer Alex Katunich, it really would be cool.
