I'll pick two guys...

Stuart Zender: Zender gave Jamirquai's sound spice, clearly a genius at the bass and perhaps with an astonishing improvisation capability, was the bandmember who actually made jamiroquai sound genuinely funky. And I still personally think his departure was the heaviest blow jamiroquai has taken since then.

Toby Smith: The god of melody... Most of the band's past compositions are credited 'Jay/Smith' but in my opinion Smith was the true genius in there... Jay just wrote lyrics, the magic of putting them inside a melody that fitted them was Toby's task, and Toby mastered it like few ones in music history could.

agreed...i really want to say simon katz for nearly a 3 way tie.

stu - what else needs to be said? his grooves were incredible. combined the best of jaco pastorius' style and paul jackson's (headhunters).

toby not only knew his way around a keyboard & synthesizers, but really was a lot of the talent in the writing department..i mean, come on..listen to the writing on dynamite. obviously missing the toby smith touch, it's just not as charming. sorry rob and matt, if you read this..but you guys know the truth!

simon katz is the man, the perfect jazz-funk rhythm guitarist. his playing added lots of texture. never bold, but just filled the sonic space so well.

Amazing if only they will bring back brass and string section (as Mr. Kay said more than once in the past ).
My opinion is: THERE'S NO FUNK WITHOUT THEM!!!

...so keep the fingers crossed and pray Laughing

this is tooo funny no on has said JAY !! .. he's a member too last time I checked.. He's got an awesome voice, great moves, is probably a control freak but is as talented as hell so that can be forgiven. Laughing

As for other band members my legend pix would be, Derrick, Sola, Toby and Stu always a favourite of mine...

Jay is an excellent showman and band leader, but as to his singing talent... I think thats debatable. He certainly doesnt have an unpleasant voice, but it seems that in concerts especially his notes are often off.

I've pretty much just commited jamiroquai heresy, so I'll see what others have to say. Laughing .

I think people forget that jamiroquai really is JK and Toby Smith, regardless of who else is in the band. They're the creators, they (more so than the other musicians) make the essence of the band.

it´s true - jay dont have a strong voice, but i´m sure that he´s got something that many singers actually doesn´t have: he knows how to improvise on stage, he´s got the tecnique, and he´s a very competent musician.

there´s no way: on the stage only him knows how to made a great show to the audience Wink

J knows how to get "high" notes after some "normal" ones.. that gives to the music something special impossible to copy in conditions! jumpinggreens

I thought it was pretty obvious that without J there wouldn't be any Jamiroquai.

yes i agree with u caroli, u never know.. Laughing

teechee i think jay's voice is well suited to the jazzy/funky genre of Jamiroquai style of music. I think he's a very good live performer too, notes may be off but that is to be expected when you are dancing/bouncing around like a ping pong ball th/out the concert.. Very entertaining at least.. IMO. Smile

Sola and derrick have done solos at concerts i have been at and they are awesome.!.. I have never seen stuart zen. live but i have all the albums and heard live stuff with him playing and again, really really good..

I do agree with most of what's been said, I think Jay has a pretty decent voice, and is a very talented entertainer. And yeah, Derrick and Sola are a huge part of the band's sound, and let's face it, they're pretty much original members. Both joined in 1994.
