Hip Hop?
A-Yo. I noticed hip hop isn't a very common thing around here. So I was wondering if there is anyone who is into hip hop here and what your top 5 artists is?
This is mine to start with (atm):
1 The Roots
2 Fugees
3 Dead Prez
4 Method Man
5 Gang Starr |

There's a few of us around here that dig hip-hop, but it is not very common for Jamirotalkers to talk about. But some that do get talked about on here in their own threads are acts like Common and Q-Tip. They are among my 2 favorites, as well as Nas, The Roots (I'm from Philly...so I could I not dig them), Mos Def (old Mos..not new Mos), Red and Meth (do you have Blackout 2..it is pretty good), etc. I like old school stuff...Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, etc. And I see you are from the Netherlands...there is a group there I dig too - Pete Philly and Perquisite!
I also write about hip-hop for a local newspaper.
So, yup..there are a few of us - nice to meet you! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

Hmm nice to hear all that. Ofcourse I have Blackout 2, among the best albums this year (so far) in my opinion... And yeah, I know Pete Philly & Perquisite, but I dig the dutch-language MC's a little more. Beats used for these artists are one of the bests of the world (try stuff like Opgezwolle) . Got to say you have a nice taste of hiphop. Ofcourse I dig many other artists apart from my top 5, it's kinda difficult to make..
I don't like the NEW Common though, like you said with Mos Def (I agree on that). And imo all old skool stuff is good.. Kool G Rap, A.T.C.Q., Warren G, Scarface, AZ, etc. You have a nice job out there:O Can I somehow read some of your work for the newspaper on the internet,? got me kinda interested =)
Thanks for replying

Sometimes I do listen to hip-hop that has jazz/funk elements and is played with live instruments (at least partly). My top would be:
The Roots
Michael Franti & Spearhead (early albums)
Othello
Kero One
US3
Jazz Liberatorz
ArtOfficial
This list should probably contain more artists (like Common), but I haven't got around to them yet. But that's a question of time. |

Tot agree! I also prefer Hip Hop with Jazz/funk and female vocals, hard rappers are not for me!
And I also quote Deesha about Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.
Last November during my vacation in Amsterdam I discovered a group called "C-Mon & Kypski": http://www.myspace.com/cmonandkypski I like their misture of hip hop, electronic and jazz. _________________

Totally agree! They're a nice group, jazz mixed with electronic and hip hop, it's not boring (at least for me) like standard hip-hop (the one with rapped lyrics). Us3 are interesting too.
I used to like crossover, in my heaviest periods (Living Colour, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers in the 1988-1991 period), which is pumped up with a little bit of hip hop. But maybe this is OT so sorry _________________ there's a stillness in time, which I cannot define, does your heart bleed like mine?
