I'd take off the 'fun' though, carefree? Indeed. _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

I was disappointed with the first listen, but now listening to it a few times it's grown on me a bit. It's definitely not what I was expecting, but I can kinda dig the 70s rock feel.
Now, starting to warm up to it, my biggest problem with it is the production. sometimes that electric guitar is really in your face, and makes it kinda cheesy. In general, I feel like they've transitioned to a much more sugary sound, which I'm not that wild about. I understand Jay's voice isn't what it used to be, so they throw in a lot of effects and back-up vocals etc into the mix. But I don't care if Jay's voice sounds terrible (which it still doesn't), I want the sound to be a little more raw, which I think would make it sound more fresh (like EOPE and ROTSC). I was encouraged to hear they were recording the album live (less computerized), but it still sounds over-produced. Live recordings from shows these days tend to sound like Jay's voice is weak, but listening to something like TWM from Abbey Road, you can tell he's still got it, and they sound great.
I really didn't notice this problem until A Funk Odyssey, but since then I feel like it's more and more the case. I remember when we got the first little clip of Black Devil Car it sounded great, but by the time the album had come out it was all puffed up with way too much instrumentation (and again, way too much guitar). Maybe he's just self-conscious about his voice deteriorating, but he really doesn't need to be.
And as for it being the first single, I don't really get that choice. But like someone said before, FJLIS and SDISJ did not at all reflect the rest of the album, so I haven't given up hope for a few gems. |

I mean the SUGARY-CARAMEL sound of the ballads..the pop tunes they're coming out with lately, they're too sweet...too many encountered feelings, one track is "my world has been a dark place sorrounded by an evil music industry" and the next "blue skies, it's been hard but I love these blue skies..." along with a guitar behind that, well...aaahhrrggg...
Remember Spend a lifetime? genius slow ballad...COTE? so-so, Blue skies? disgusting..it's like little by little he has more freedom to be "pink"
You're in Cali, I've lived in Cali...don't misinterpret me..I'm not trying to be generalizing here, just a certain aspect of his music sounds...well..
I agree Meike...I think there are three groups:
Purists (like me), very hard critics who are demanding and possibly narrow-minded, stuck with the good old sound
Middle of the road They dig the old sound, but also accept the new one
The ones living the new freshness Self-explanatory
Yes, live they've always sounded great, that has never changed...and the horns latley are good..I'll wait and see the rest of the album, i only wish to see them live again, last time I was in first line and I was given one of Derrick's drumsticks...I'd love to go backstage at some point.
Our ideas and opinions sometimes clash against each otehr, but I love that about tie forum, I love you all.

I would categorize another side, wich i belong: The Vanguard.
Those who know the band since it's very beginning (or most of 'em) and got to know the mechanics of it and have a more multilateral view of things, those who know how to differentiate and treat the tunes as single entities and won't ever get over enthusiastic with new material even if they wait more than 5 years in a row Also those with a more centered point of view, pretty much like, it feels like: what you see is what you get.
I see people like me, Dye, Jamirofan2000, Dogget, ophone and some others in it _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

Hi, I always see the topics on the forum but I never write anything, now that I heard this new track I had to write something about it, and this is my opinion:
I think the song is not THAAAAAAAAAT bad but is extremely boring and definitely it doesn't sound like Jamiroquai. It seems like this song is for teenager girls in love or something like that, it's a very cheap pop ballad and we all know that they can make things 100 times better. I can't believe they want to release this as the first single, by the way, like many of you said, this doesn't mean anything, because as FJLIS was the first single on Dynamite and is the worst song of the album, maybe this is the same case, I REALLY hope that this is the same...
I still have faith that this album will have at least 2 or 3 great funky songs, until then, I can only wait and hear the old albums. |

I’m not a big fan of his ballads. I think after ROTSC (Half the Man and Manifest Destiny) he should’ve stopped. It’s incredibly frustrating he’s so resentful towards that album. I think deep down inside he knows he’ll never top it on his own.
I’m middle of the road. I accept that Jay isn’t who he was with musicians who were allowed more say so than the people who make up the band now. And why did he add the female vocalists. They add cheese; which was never there before.
I think in order for him to find consistency he needs to find either an emotional theme or a musical theme and stick to it. The eclectic nature of his albums now feels like a mixtape of Very Good (could’ve been Great but he doesn’t know what that sounds like anymore); Good (acceptable for who he is now); Bad (doesn’t measure up to the past); and Worse (shouldn’t of left the studio). |

If nothing else, this song has made me look up what an Appaloosa is
Not such a bad song after a ton of listens, but omg, still soooo slow and introspective for a lead single!!! (and yeah I agree with whoever it was who said 1995 Jay would throw up if he knew this is what he'd be doing 15 years later)

Blue Skies
So these are the figurines
Acting out all the scenes before my eyes
I thought I knew them all by name
But they started looking much the same
And it's no surprise
That I don't wanna listen
Too much
How can I give up on all the days I know I've won
There's nothing but rainbows
I'll be leaving the shadows
Behind me
Thought I might be dropping out
But now I'm gonna work it out
I'm gonna work with me
I'm runnin' like an Appaloosa
Then I'm rolling like a rusty ship on a stormy sea
(rolling out on a stormy sea)
You know that people are saying
Strange things
Talk to the hand 'cause I know you think my face is gone
I don't wanna listen (don't wanna listen)
Too much
I'm not gonna give up on all the days I know I've won
There's nothing but blue sky (nothing but blue sky)
There's nothing but blue sky
Nothings gonna stop me now
I'm skimming like a skipping stone on a silver lake
I'll take it when the chips are down
But to play the perfect happy clown
You gotta make a mistake (got to, got to make mistakes)
And people are saying (people saying)
Strange things
And I don't wanna listen (I don't wanna listen)
Too much yeah
Nothing but blue sky
Blue sky
How can I tell you I know this won't be the last song
I don´t wanna listen (I don´t wanna listen)
Too much
Not gonna give up on all the days that I know I've won
Thats where I'm going
'Cause there's nothing, nothing but blue sky
Thats where I'm going
Nothing but
Rainbows falling down on me
Ooooh hey, heyyy
Aahhhh
There'll be nothing but blue sky
Can't you see
That's where I'm going
Got to believe me (blue skies)
That's where I'm going (blue skies)
That's where I'm going (blue skies)
That's where I'm going _________________

I've been telling my friends that Jamiroquai would bring out a new album, and it would be kick-ass funky. Cause I told them about the great live-performances this summer.
But with this song...they're gonna laugh me in my face and get back to their own favourite music immediately. |
