So far (and I can't count how many times I've replayed this one!) my favourite song in the album. Makes me want to jump off my chair and dance!
2:59-4:30: The best 1:31 minutes in the album. Classy transition. Lovely synth, Great choir. And of course, that sax solo blows my mind. Again, again and again.

<He wants your loving tonight...> Wink

Great tune, but very Roxy Music influenced... it's obvious... Sounds a little bit like "Love Is The Drug" for example (to me)...
But it's one of the highlight of RDLS, no doubt about it.

Max.

Exactly the same I'm thinking about that song!

Love this one! The keyboards into, Jazzy, bluesy, the sax throughout -maybe a return to the 80's? Yes Doc, I hear Roxy Music!
I love the rough tired voice near the end (3:06).
Finishes with the chorus of the girls
"Tonight my dear, tonight your lovin' "

But can't figure out the story. What do you think?

And what the heck is a 'plasticine machine' Question

Oh yeah. Interpretation of one of my favourite songs. Very Happy
I might not be right about it, but here's my two cents:

Jay narrates the story of a girl who meets a guy in a club. They're clearly attracted to each other. Although the people around her (her friends, her mom) are against it and he has a history of leaving broken hearts behind she still decides to ignore all the signs and pursue a relationship... which sadly ends in "thirteen years of negligence" (I take it that they actually got married, but it's just a possibility since it's not spelled out), where she's too far in to escape, "rue[ing] the day when [she] took his loving." The fact that she was blinded by "smoke and mirrors" is both a reference to the setting in which the couple first met, and the way in which the guy presented himself as something flashy and interesting to get her. I see it as a bit of a cautionary tale.

As for the plasticine machine... well, I don't know how you actually make plasticine, but I take it there's a lot of grinding, softening and stretching of the materials, which could relate to the way the guy moves. Maybe that's what Jay wanted to convey? 2scratchchin It also sounds cool on its own, even if it makes no sense... Laughing

So, what do you guys think?

LittleS -great interpretation! I love to hear someone else put in their 2 cents. This one has interesting lyrics! Sounds good.

"Slip on out and slip on into his shoes".
Sounds like "understand his perspective".

But perhaps a story of a girl who may now regret taking "his lovin' " 13 years ago. "Too far in to jump the fence" -probably has kids!

I've never heard of the term "Plasticine", I assume plastics. Very Happy

Yeah, like Play Doh, colored modelling clay of sorts. That stuff we've all played with as kids. Cool

I see "Smoke & Mirrors" as possibly implying an illusion.
But could also be a setting.

A repeated theme of "dancing" (I think in 3 songs).

Now I think Smoke & Mirrors would be a great re-mix. Wink
Adding a techno edge.

Why do people like remixes at all?

I know Jay hates remixes. He said it's a distortion of the music they make. It's true.
Now if you have all elements of a song and make a new song out of it, it could be very artistic and interesting.
but adding a sick beat and the vocals is just cheap.
