Yeah, Beverly Knight! I remember her - she and her band had been a great support act.
Lovely version of When you gonna learn... like it!
Thanks for sharing, and welcome legspinner!

Thank you for the welcome messages!
I usually see new members being lynched at other forums I'm on, so it's truly much appreciated; makes for a nice atmosphere. Good to see you like the video as well |

Lol, I'm with Javis on this one. I don't like it either. I just didn't mention it at first because it was LegSpinner's first post and I wanted to only say something positive! haha
The thing about Jay's voice is that it just sounds good without him really trying. Beverly (and most other soul/rnb diva style singers) just WAIL. She's wailing and wailing with so much soul that it kind of kills it for me. There's just too much expression and vibrato and loudness and effort. It's just too much.
Now I'm not saying she has a bad voice, from an objective standpoint, her voice is amazing. From my own subjective standpoint, it's too much traditional POP Bluesy-ness. I prefer the cool, jazzy, light, yet punchy style that Jay brings over this not just normally, but by a huge longshot. Don't get mad at me Jamily! haha _________________ www.funkfiction.com |

It is a nice version indeed, but I agree the vocal part can seem inappropriate... Now I'd really like to hear this arrangement but Jay singing it

Feelin like the oddball here.
Now I 've heard other people try to sing it like Jay and Fail bigtime. When a clip of someone that Jay PICKED to be apart of Jami and she "took it to church". Yes its bluesy, soulful, gospel-like and its jazzy too. I like it and she put her foot in it. Her voice is great, its strong it will knock you down. Maybe you guys aren't used to this type of singing , hence this is where funk came from.
Funk Fiction if you are a music head like you claim then you understand me.
I just don't get it many are fans of funk music , but didn't like the way she sang WYGL. _________________

That, quite simply, is why I like it. Issues with cover versions usually lie with the artist just copying the original interpretation with a few token vocal variations, the result is a poor and lazy tribute.
This performance, fortunately, avoids that entirely. It certainly doesn't beat the Jamiroquai recording, but that isn't the intention...but the arrangement is beautifully done, despite the continued lack of a didgeridoo! |
