Bob Marley!

Robert Nesta Marley
BORN: February 6, 1945, St. Ann, Jamaica
DIED: May 11, 1981, Miami, FL

In the meantime Jamaican music evolving and became very popular throughout the Caribbean due to it's invention of Ska music. When Bob was 16, he started to follow his dream of becoming a musician. Music to many young Jamaicans was an escape from the harshness of everyday life. One of those kids was Jimmy Cliff who at the age of 14 had already recorded a couple of hits. After meeting Bob, Jimmy introduced him to Leslie Kong, a local record producer. Bob followed his advice and auditioned for Leslie Kong. Bob's musical talents shone much more brightly then anyone else that day and found himself in the studio recording his first single "Judge Not". Unfortunately neither "Judge Not" nor his 1962 single "One more cup of Coffee" did very well. Bob soon left Kong after she failed to give him his pay.
Bob's life continued to look more bright on February 10, 1966 when Bob Marley married girlfriend Rita Anderson. The next day Bob left for the United States to visit his mother who lived in Delaware. While in the US he worked to better finance his music and soon returned home. When Bob Marley returned the Wailing Wailers' music evolved from Ska to Rock Steady. This evolution conflicted with Coxsone who wanted a Ska band. So the newly Wailing Wailers left Coxsone to form and renamed themselves the Wailers. Instead of looking around for a new label the Wailers decided to form their own which they called Wail 'N' Soul. This coincided with the birth of the Marley's first born who they named Cedalla. They released a couple signals on their label such as "Bend down low" and "Mellow Mood" before it folded the very same year.
1970 saw the Wailers family grow with the addition of Aston "Family Man" Barret and his brother Carleton. The Wailers were now quite popular throughout the Caribbean but still internationally unknown. With this popularity a second more successful label was formed by the Wailers called Tuff Gong after a nickname of Bob Marley. The Wailers met Johnny Nash and soon Bob accompanied Nash to Sweden and London. When in London, Bob recorded "Reggae on Broadway" which was released by CBS. After this the rest of the Wailers arrived in London to help promote the single only to find that there were out of money and stranded there. With little options available, Bob went into the Island Records Basing Street Studios and asked to speak to the boss, Chris Blackwell with hopes of a possible record deal.
After the amazing honour and experience Bob Marley continue to record, "Uprising" was released in 1980. Everything was looking bright, the band was planning an American tour with Stevie Wonder for that winter. Bob's health was deteriorating, but he still got clearance from a doctor to go on the road. The tour started with Boston, followed by New York. During the New York show Bob's looked very sick and he almost fainted. The next morning on Sept. 21 while jogging through Central, Bob collapsed and was brought to the hospital. There a brain tumour was discovered and doctors gave him a month to live. Rita Marley wanted the tour cancelled but Bob wanted to continue on. He played an unforgettable show in Pittsburgh but was too ill to continue so the tour was finally cancelled.

It would be the last show he ever performed. Treatment prolonged his life somewhat but the inevitable was soon to happening. Bob was transported to a Miami hospital where he was baptized Berhane Selassie in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church on November 4. In a final attempt to save his life he underwent a controversial treatment in Germany. While in Germany he celebrated his 36th and final birthday. Ultimately the treatment didn't work. Bob wanted to die at home so he was flown back. Unfortunately he didn't finish the trip, he died on May 11, 1981 in a Miami hospital. He was internationally mourned for and thousands showed up at his May 21 funeral to show their respects. In attendance wereboth the Jamaican President and the Leader of the Opposition. Bob Marley now rests in a mausoleum at his birthplace.

After his death he was awarded Jamaica's Order of Merit. The Prophet Gad insisted on becoming the owner of Bob's ring. However, amazingly the ring the disappeared and still has yet to be found. Bob's mother said that the ring was returned to it's place of origin.

Bob Marley knew of his fate. Being a visionary he foresaw this, his words will forever be immortalized in the lyrics in which he wrote.

"One bright morning when my work is over I will fly away home"

This man just want to change the world with his music..well i tink he do it and very well! Im a bit fan since i was 13 listen some songs they are very calm and relaxing. The most of important thing in most of songs is the Lyrics..like i say some caming from the deep soul of this Jamaican Man!

Here some of musics that "everybody knows"
-Get Up,Stand Up
-I Shot the Sheriff
-No Woman no Cry
-Jamming
-One Love People get Ready
-Is This Love
-Sun is Shining
-Could you be loved
-Buffalo Soldier
-Iron Lion Zion
-I know a Place (and mutch more)

I must say that i like very much Iron Lion Zion..when he starts in the music and say: "I am on the rock and then I check a stock" ..well this rock got a story , he got a small house in jamaica, like in the middle of jungle, very simple 4 walls one roof, 1 door and some windows! and outside in the front of the house , theres a little rock , look like a pillow , he was laydown there one night like he do many times, with the head on the rock! Wink it was there he write : Iron Lion Zion.

Don't know how many of you like bob Marley or the songs that he play..but i like very much and posted here a bit of his biography!

* Sorry Mouse for bringing up old topics, but I didn't want to start a whole new one for this new news Heart*

Island Records celebrates the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s ‘Exodus’ by releasing the album on USB memory stick and SD Memory Card
Island Records celebrates the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s ‘Exodus’ masterpiece this summer by releasing the album on the groundbreaking new formats of USB Memory Stick and Micro SD Memory Card. ‘Exodus’ will be the very first artist-specific album to be released on both these formats, hitting stores on Monday 28th May 2007.
Island will also reissue ‘Exodus’ – described by America’s Time magazine as “the best music album of the 20th century” - on three further formats. Fans can thus choose from:
• USB MEMORY STICK. A 4000 limited edition, produced in the Rastafarian colours of red, green and gold. The Memory Stick contains not only the 10 original songs on ‘Exodus’ but also three video tracks recorded at London’s Rainbow Theatre in June 1977
• MICRO SD MEMORY CARD. This collectors’ item is limited to just 2000 copies. The Micro SD is a small, removable flash memory card – the size of a fingernail – that can be used in mobile phones, portable audio players and PCs. This ‘Exodus’ format features the same contents as the USB Memory Stick
• STANDARD CD. The classic album, featuring the 10 tracks on the original release and now reissued as a special 30th Anniversary Edition packaged - for the first time - in a quality ‘hardback’ case
• DELUXE CD. Limited to just 5000 copies, this version features not only the album but also a separate DVD with 12 tracks from Marley’s historic Rainbow concerts in the summer of 1977
• LP. The return of the original and legendary10-track vinyl album, as first released in June 1977. In addition, a specially-packaged 30th Anniversary DVD of ‘Exodus Live at the Rainbow’ will be in stores on Monday 18th June while a new 144-page hardback book - which includes the full CD - is published on Thursday 7th June. The ‘Exodus’ book, published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson at £25.00, has been edited by the esteemed music commentator and critic Richard Williams and includes contributions from such writers as Lloyd Bradley – author of the acclaimed ‘Bass Culture’ history of reggae – Vivien Goldman, Robert Christgau, Neil Spencer and the celebrated poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. The book, which features over 200 images, is introduced by Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records. Marley recorded the ‘Exodus’ album in exile in the UK. Having escaped an assassination attempt in Jamaica, he arrived in London during the first week of 1977 and set to work recording his fifth studio album.Released on Friday 3rd June, 1977, ‘Exodus’ became the transforming album in Marley’s career, a recording of extraordinary creative maturity which resonated with audiences around the world. ‘Exodus’ – which stayed on the UK chart for 56 consecutive weeks and included three hit singles - established Marley as the Third World’s first superstar, a legacy that survives thirty years after the album’s release. The album’s anniversary is also celebrated with a 90-minute television film, ‘Arena: Bob Marley’s Exodus 77’, to be screened on BBC2 at the end of May. The film, by the award-winning English director Anthony Wall, will be publicly previewed at London’s National Film Theatre on Friday 27th April. The BBC film is a visual account of the world in 1977 and Marley’s response to that world through his most significant album. It is a film about the relationship between an artist and his environment; about the impact of the world on Bob Marley and of Bob Marley on the world.

Laughing Bob Marley's music is the most influencial music of all time.

So prophetic and inspirational. And yes I remember the 1978 Peace concert...he got two opposition parties to unite under peace.

I have been into Bob Marley since I was 15 years (im 34 now) ...

Most of his early early recordings were stolen by the recording engineer and so they are now free game to anyone who wants to release them on practically any label...that's why there are so many different releases of his earlier stuff that have the same songs just in different order.

but his Island recordings are the jem of his career, because they have really prophectic lyrics and lasting power.....legendary tunes.

Jah Live! rasta hat
