Rally halted after arrest of Britons in fatal crash (not Jay)

The Gumball 3000 rally was called off last night after two British drivers in a Porsche were involved in a high-speed accident in which a man died and his wife was injured.

Organisers of the 3,000-mile tour, which began in 1999, took the decision after Nick Morley, the brother of a wealthy property developer, and Matthew McConville were in a collision with a Volkswagen Golf in the Republic of Macedonia. The two men were arrested on the border with Albania.

They were part of a convoy of 120 cars driven by pop stars, models and businessmen who each paid £28,000 to drive from London to Athens and back, via Dubrovnik and Germany, in a week.

The rally, which was inspired by “Cannonball” Baker’s coast-to-coast motorcycle race across the United States in about 54 hours in 1933, will not travel any farther this year.

Maximillion Cooper, the organiser, told The Times that he felt the rally should be stopped as a mark of respect to the man who died. He said: “We are very saddened by what has happened and I feel that it would be wrong to continue. On behalf of everyone at Gumball I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to [the man's] family. We are doing everything we can for them.”

Ivo Kotevski, a Macedonian police spokesman, told Associated Press: “Both Britons are testifying before an investigative magistrate in the town of Struga, where a decision will be made whether to hold them in custody or not.”

Vladimir Cepuljoski, 67, died of injuries while being transported to a hospital in Skopje after the accident on Wednesday night. His wife, Margarita, remains in a critical condition.

The police spokesman added: “Two British citizens left the scene of the accident. Shortly afterwards, border authorities found them in another [vehicle] . . . at the Qafasan border crossing with Albania.”

They were arrested on charges of endangering traffic and abandoning an accident victim. If convicted, the charges may lead to up to a year in prison.

A spokesman for the rally said: “The Golf pulled out from a stop sign and Mr Morley and McConville tried to swerve around it but clipped the side of the car.”

Mr Cooper said that the rally was not a race but a “cultural international tour”. Turkey had refused to accept the 240 participants on safety grounds.

Nick Morley, 29, lives in Altrincham with his older brother, Oliver, the managing director of a large property development company. Matt McConville, his co-driver, is the company’s property director.

Celebrities who have taken part in the rally include the model Caprice Bourret, Orlando Bloom, the star of The Lord of the Rings, and Jay Kay, the lead singer with Jamiroquai.

THAT is Really DISGRACEFUL!!! I see the innocent ones always seem to come off worse!! Bad having an accident but leaving the scene and trying to hide is unforgivable, IF --> that is actually what happened & I am reading this right.. Wow.. BeTTA get a Lawyer SON! Betta get a REAL GOOD ONE!! they going to need it and it's a good thing they're rich cause then come the Civil ACTION.. The organisers want to be prepared for that as well.... I said this Rally was going Pair shaped this confirms it... I feel very sorry for the victims in this... My thoughts are with the wife involved in a critical cond. hope she makes it..

Lydster...do you really believe he's not having sex since he has not a girlfriend?? camon!
A part the fact that is noone of my business, I'm pretty sure things that are said on interviews and things he believes are quite far away...think at this: is since he left Denise that every time before a tour he's looking for the woman ..of his life...marketing to me!

Unluckily we don't have an option to say how we want him to use the money we paied for his music..all we can do is trust we are following a nice and good person.. and to me he is! a good guy to be proud of!

But that cames from my personal experience and has nothing to do with his pubblic actions!

I'm really sad for the death man ...is such a stupid thing..to kill someone ...anyway it happen, but for someone's fun is just illogical!

Me too I wasn't too happy for this rally ( not a race not a race!!!!) but I believe he has a real passion for cars...like me if I see an horse there are no chances to convince me to stay far away ...horses are less dangerous and they don't pollute ( a part when they fart Wink Laughing )
but still we cannot choose our passions!
I know you are disappointed 'cause you believe he can be much better than this...but is only up to him...and yes if you don't feel like you like what he does/how he behave download next Jamiroquai's stuff!
I must admit after Syncronized I was totally depressed and my copy on AFo is still the one I buyed on the middle of the street on a carpet of a guy selling pirate stuff! I don't feel guilty at all!
To me the problem is not Jay...the problem is that we as society are considering more important musicians, actors and stars of ppl like Gino Strada, Nelson Mandela..researchers who spend theyre lives in laboratories to find a cure to HIV, Cancer ,Ebola and stuff like that!
That was why I had trouble being a Jamiro's fan!
I know that I will never ask them an autograph...... but one day I'll meet Gino Strada...that's a person I could let tatoo is ahtograph on my arm!
What I'm trying to say is that Jay is only ...doing what the other are doing...and to me he did also tryed to fight against flour mills to wind... to me he has proved he is a nice person and that I've used in a wise way my time being a fan for 11 years!!!

untill what Paris/Beyonce/Shakira/etc..etc.. says/do is more important than people who spend theyre life doing something important and helpfull it will be difficoult to change people's mind!
But Jay is not responsable for that... we are, people we know are, people who feed this market ( and we'r in) are!
He's just a boy whit a great talent, a wonderfull voice, some hats and few good ideas!
don't give him to much importance...chance people around you that's somethign important!

I believe this terrible accident that happened during the RALLY has being a terrible heat for him! and hopefully this will let him think he should be more respectfull 'cause life is one and only as far as we know!

I really wish once you'll meet him and tell him what you believe...but remember your the one who feel thoose feelings...so act...don't wait for him!!

Vere

I can't believe they actually left the scene of the crime.
And I can't believe they would only get a year in prison for the whole thing.
If you leave the scene of a crime where someone was killed here, you get longer than a year.

Then again money can buy you freedom sometimes...

Thanks for that link Anna.

that's what bugs me and lydster...that it's all done for the fun.and i do believe that jay will have a hard time with it but will the rest?don't think so...
and yes jay is (should be) irrelevant as a person to us which are fans of JQ and not jK....but still it's a bit strange that at the beginning you have this young man who sings great songs and does what those songs say,but now it's all different.and lol of course he can have sex if he's not in a relationship, but i bet even he has missed something deeper than just sex sometime in between-we all would.

Hmmm, about the sex things: In some interview he talked about his "wicked shoe fetish" and there he really said "I haven't had sex in ages!" So...And of course he needs love. A lot of love. But I think he needs sex too. And I don't think Jay's the guy to have relationships without sex. (In fact, he actually wants to have sex with a lesbian in the song Radio!!!)

And Jameerica, you seem to be the only one who actually understands me (thanks!!!), we seem to be thinking in the same way. Of course I'm a Jamiroquai fan and not a Jay Kay fan. But Jay is unluckily the only visible part of the band. What I mean is that he's the only band member the yellow (is it yellow?) press reports about. And if I knew Jay had always been that way, then I would accept this. Or I wouldn't be a Jamiroquai fan at all. But it's like Jameerica said: He used to be different. What I wanna say is that I'm not projecting my view on things on him, but the view HE expressed on SC&EOPE and partly TWM. So I don't say "He's gotta see the world like me", but "He seems not to see the world like he used to anymore."
A quote from the Emergency booklet: "At the rate we're going we've got 10 years to turn this world's head around. I can only think of the worst if we don't. But somehow inside I know we can. I for one have faith in people like you (let's face it, you must be on the right track if you bought this album!) Know which side you're standing on, don't let people tell you you're wrong when you know you're right, if you do, we may all regret it, because it will be all over. I think it's time we had a revolution." I think there's nothing more to add. The whole album was full of "speeches" like this. I wonder where that all went?

Deja, I also think he's a nice man. That's the problem. Because he actually used to be called "the angry dwarf".

And bad enough they "drive" through Europe in that celeb rally because they don't know what else to do. But even worse they killed somebody who wasn't even involved in their "freetime activities". I mean, if they had just injured one of their colleagues, then I would say "well, this just had to happen. But I don't care, it's their problem." But this is really no fun anymore. It's just sickening. Hope the guys who killed the man sooo regret that whole thing...and Jay even more. Maybe he thinks about this rally again and decides to rally in his tour bus next time. Would be better for everyone.

I understand you, but that doesn't mean I necessarily agree with everything you say.

What I mean is that I've got the feeling that some people here don't read my posts properly. Of course you don't have to agree with everything I say.

This is so sad... someone death and injured cuz of irresponsibility...
I agree with many things that Lydster and jameerica say...
I honestly think there's a huge difference between the Jay that used to write lyrics about "Revolution" up to the one that wrote about "Givenchy" in Dynamite... I TRULY like Dynamite (the song and the CD) but ... at least for my perception "something's missing" in the current Jay...

Rolling Eyes

give the man some time to gather himself
entertainment is not easy you just have to watch several E! shows to get the picture lol…

the video for CG pop as ever?? flashy cars speeding at the speed of cheeba at that time???!, big mistake must have left a bunch of ecologically savvy fans behind with that one. i wont' mention the other ones but each contained at least one pop song.

one more thing on those songs with a 'message'
I thought he was singing about government officals, corporation’s, and their wrong deeds right? and how we have to act as dissent to the structure? Ie like him protesting the deeds of President bush .?

ok im saying jay, as much as he detests certain idealsims ,he is a product of it and distributes it , and we buy it( we got our money from some where) but we have to understand it and maybe work around it?.
Cool
