Sly and the Family Stone LPs Reissued/World Tour
Can you dig it?
I know this may be a dumb question, but I wonder if Sly Stone himself is actually going to come out of hiding again (like he did at the Grammys although he looked and acted horrible) for this rumored tour? I'd love to see him go out on a high note...and no, not that high!

Sly Stone world tour to follow this summer, with special guests Thomas Pynchon and Jandek
Contrary to the accepted wisdom regarding pot smokers, Sly Stone was productive as hell in his heyday, releasing seven albums in as many years with his band the Family Stone. On March 20, Epic/Legacy will celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the release of the group's 1967 debut, A Whole New Thing, by reissuing it along with the rest of the band's seven pre-solo Sly or Family Stone "comeback" albums.
All seven albums (chronologically: A Whole New Thing, Dance to the Music, Life, Stand!, There's a Riot Goin' On, Fresh, Small Talk) will come as limited edition digipaks with bonus tracks, plenty of which are previously unreleased. According to a press release, they will also feature "restored and expanded packaging, including rare photos, memorabilia, and new liner notes by a diverse group of writers and artists."
The bonus tracks for each release are as follows.
A Whole New Thing: "Underdog" (B-side version, mono), "Let Me Hear It From You" (B-side version, mono), "Only One Way Out of This Mess", "What Would I Do", "You Better Help Yourself" (previously unreleased instrumental).
Dance to the Music: "Dance to the Music" (single version, mono), "Higher" (unissued single version, mono), "Soul Clappin'", "We Love All" (previously unreleased), "I Can't Turn You Loose" (previously unreleased), "Never Do Your Woman Wrong" (previously unreleased instrumental).
Life: "Dynamite!" (single version, mono), "Seven More Days" (previously unreleased), "Pressure" (previously unreleased), "Sorrow" (previously unreleased instrumental).
Stand!: "Stand!" (single version, mono), "I Want to Take You Higher" (single version, mono), "You Can Make It If You Try" (unissued/cancelled single version, mono), "Soul Clappin' II" (previously unreleased), "My Brain (Zig-Zag)" (previously unreleased instrumental).
There's a Riot Goin' On: "Runnin' Away" (single version, mono), "Untitled instrumental track #1" (previously unreleased), "Untitled instrumental track #2" (previously unreleased, mono), "Untitled instrumental track #3" (previously unreleased, mono).
Fresh: "Let Me Have It All" (alternate mix, previously unreleased album master), "Frisky" (alternate mix, previously unreleased album master), "Skin I'm In" (alternate mix, previously unreleased album master), "Keep on Dancin'" (alternate mix, previously unreleased album master), "Babies Makin' Babies" (alternate mix, previously unreleased album master).
Small Talk: "Crossword Puzzle" (previously unreleased), "Time for Livin'" (previously unreleased alternate version), "Loose Booty" (previously unreleased alternate version), "Positive" (previously unreleased instrumental). _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

More dates announced -
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/43112-sly-stone-performance-turns-into-tour
We got it wrong when we recently reported that Sly Stone had scheduled a rare live performance. Make that performances, as it turns out Sly's show at the Opera House in Bournemouth, England will actually be the last of a nine-date European tour with the Family Stone.
Most of the band's shows are at festivals, but there is a club date in Paris in addition to the one in Bournemouth. The tour begins July 12 in Perugia, Italy.
Thanks very much to Scott from Portland for the tip.
Dates:
07-12 Perugia, Italy - Umbria Jazz Festival
07-13 Montreux, Switzerland - Stravinski Hall (Montreux Jazz Festival)
07-14 Gent, Belgium - Blue Note Records Festival
07-15 Rotterdam, Netherlands - North Sea Jazz Festival
07-19 Nice, France - Nice Jazz Festival
07-20 Pori, Finland - Kirjurinluoto Arena (Pori Jazz Festival)
07-23 Paris, France - Olympia Hall
07-27 San Sebastian, Spain - Jazzaldia
07-28 Bournemouth, England - Opera House _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

This tour is a DON`T MISS! The band has been re-organized, I don`t know who`ll be participating from the original line-up, but Sly`s daugter will be performing on vocals and the master on keyboards. I can`t really express my feelings when I`m listening to their tracks and watching their performances. But it`s a shame now to see Sly in such a condition, I wanna keep him in my memories with that big, neverending smile and scream, not the way he`s now... If only I had the chance once to give him a sheaker for the music he brought to us... |

Not so good review came in from his concert in Italy recently:
http://music.guardian.co.uk/rock/story/0,,2126483,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=39%20
I won't post the whole thing, but this is how it ends...poor Sly.
'I Want To Take You Higher' almost took off when he rose, Lazarus-like, from his chair and shuffled to the front of the stage, almost animated, a cruel caricature of his former self. Then he was gone without a backward glance, and the group lurched into an extended jazz-funk jam that, in its interminable pointlessness, eventually drove me to the exit. It was an oddly enervating night, sad and somehow unnecessary. I guess he needs the money but one can't help thinking that Sly's heart is not in it. Never mind his soul. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |
