Language Help
Hi everyone! I am in need for a little help. I'd like to improve my English, not for school or work, just for the satisfaction of self-improvement. Before you mention it... yes, I do know English, I'm just unable to speak it nicely. I sound like Borat. And I'd prefer to sound like Hugh Grant . So... any brits willing to lend a hand? (Or a mouth haha)
PM me for msn!
Thanks _________________

Not being English, and always learning more and more
Think there is just 1 way to learn...just do it!
Don't be afraid to sound like Borat, and one day your sound will have improved. _________________ May you always feel the wind on your face and the waves on your toes |

the best way to get a country accent is to go and stay there for a while!!
any chances to do a 2 or 3 weeks trip in the UK?

@freaky... I don't think I'm afraid, I rather want to... speed it up
@jameerica... yeah. I used to watch BBC (what better...) but the channel has been removed from my cable subscription!
@Deja... if I could, I'd do it without giving it a second thought. I love travelling and I'm sure it would be awesome. BUT... I can't afford such a trip. That's why I'm trying to find a lo-budget solution, like having an audio convo through msn or skype or the like with a native speaker (someone that can stand my Borat accent ) with enough patience (and time) to do it more or less regularly... though I guess that's probably asking too much. I'm a fast learner, the hassle shouldn't last long I've been to Spain once, and I picked up a nice Spanish accent in no time. I had so much fun with it when I came back! _________________

you know, there are some coffee places in BA where people meet in order to chat in different languages.. i've never been to one of those but i've heard from people who have, and so they say it's really useful |

To improve your english, chatting with native speakers every day, makes your english training a lot better.
Also, watch movies and pay attention to what they say, how they say it. Just get involved with the language, is the best way to learn.

Been doing that for a long time already. I'm at a point where I can't learn much more from that, I need to actually speak with people now. Also, it would be very geeky to memorize and reproduce all the lines from my favourite movies
Maybe I'll take Marina's advice and find out some more about those cafes. Though I'm not sure I'd like to walk up to a random person and start talking. _________________

Marina's suggestion is great. I would also check out the Expat community in your area, am sure there are quite a few events which they organise. Or if there are a few of you who want to improve, perhaps you can all arrange a small class with a teacher at evenings or weekends. Though you will all have to be at a similar level for it to work.
You can also find an online language penpal, by doing a search on google or using this website. They may want to exchange a language with you, so you can learn from one another.
You can also add me to msn: hania1973@hotmail.com.
Good luck!! |

Ok, but... what's EXPAT? Anyway, that may get too complicated for my likes. I'm feeling weird about all this thread now haha. But now I must finish what I started. So... _________________

oh I see...I'm sorry but being Italian we'll sound like borat meeting Berlusconi togheter... should be lot of fun but not much helpfull for your emprovement.
good luck!
a BTW: my boyfriend did follow an online course ( quite cheap like 200 euro for 6 month...not at month for the all 6 month ) were you study and then you talk with people from around the world...believe me can be hilarious specially when an Italian a Japanice and a Maroquian are trying to have a conversation, plus is helpfull 'cause there's always a teacher that teach you also the correct pronunciation, if you are interested I can ask him the name of the course!

200€ for us is like a gazillion pesos, not affordable.
That's why tourism in Argentina is like the cheapest thing in the world.
