Which synths used in earlier albums?
Hello. This is my first post to this forum. I have been a Jamiroquai fan since early 90s back when I lived in Spain. I am making my own music now and I am a huge fan of the synth sounds in early Jamiroquai music. Does anyone know what synths Toby Smith used on Emergency on Planet Earth & Return of the Space Cowboy? I hear Hammond organ & Moog sounds in there. I am hoping I can get some soft synths to use similar sounds in my own tracks.
Thanks |

I think the Hammond b-3 and the Moog pianos were only Toby's side instruments, as his preffered sonic weapon was the Rhodes mark II piano, which proved to be quite popular during the 70's. |

I believe they also used some ARP synths..maybe you should check out the VST's from Arturia, if you haven't already. They seem pretty good. Where's High Times? He knows more than anyone about Jamiroquai's equipment. |

..For sure, the first keyboard to be used was (and still is from Matt) the Fender Rhodes 73 electric piano (I don't remember which version, maybe that with tremolo effect inside...), plus many pedals to modify his sound (Mutron Phaser? some wha wha's?).
From Taratata's live performances and from some DVD's I have, I can recognize an earlier MiniMoog and a Honher Clavinet. In "Emergency..." we can maybe hear some Hammond (not used to much) and an acoustic piano.
During Japan tour I saw the Rhodes, the Honher, a Moog Source (wonderful!), and (maybe) some Logan or Solina strings keyboard (I'm not sure).
Then follow:
- a MemoryMoog (Allrigh video, but used in studio, of course)
- a digital Yamaha P...50? piano
- a Yamaha CS1 (the blue polyphonic synth upon Clavinet in Woodstock live 1999) plus a Clavia NordLead (pad in Planet Home and many riffs as High Times..)
This are the keyboards I can recognize from the early days, but who konws which kind of gear was in the studio? Jay said that Toby loved many "analog" keys, i.e. Elka Syntex (yeah!), but his trademark, I guess, was the lot of effects applied to his keys: phasers, filters and whawha's.
In this days, Matt Johnson can do a better job with this axes (saw during last tour):
- the still present Fender Rhodes
- Alesis Andromeda
- Korg Triton
- Roland V Synth
and, in the past, Clavia Nord Lead and Roland JP8000...
The aboves are monsters, speaking of sound...

do you know which was used for the pad sounds on just another story? it's around 2:15..and fades out into the 2nd movement of the song. |
