Hehe, yes I was about to say the same. The 70's decade is THE best for me. There are some good stuff in the 80's, but most of the funky stuff you are talking about, doesn't sound so fresh, but rather flat. The synths were heavily used and, well, I don't really love most stuff.
I suggest:
Incognito 'Jazz Funk'
Dexter Wansel's first 4 albums
Leon Ware 'Inside Is Love' & 'Musical Massage'
Brothers Johnson 'Light Up The Night'
The Commodores 'Zoom'
George Benson 'Give Me The Night'
Patrice Rushen 'Patrice' and 'Straight From The Heart'
Michael Jackson 'Off The Wall'
Chaka Khan 'Epiphany: The Best Of'
Earth Wind & Fire, almost anything
Hope that gets your ear dancing

Acid Jazz is simply fusion with a different title. Yeah, fusion is good. Try something by Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters such as "Sextant" or "Headhunters". You may also want to get some of Prince's early stuff such as "Sign 'O' the Times", or his infamous "Black Album" which, despite being from the 80's is actually 70's gold. Get Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions", P-Funk's "Maggot Brain", "One Nation Under a Groove" and "Uncle Jam", and if you want something of today's 'old school', try a Japanese band called "Rip Slyme". You might also want to get the "The Sugarhill Records Story" boxset, Miles Davis' "On the Corner" etc. etc. "Minneapolis Genius" by 94 East ain't bad, too. Also, get something from James Brown, obviously. |
