Elimination of Poverty?
Lately, I've been surrounding with economics and the poor.
Last week, it was an event for the Poor People's Economic Human Rights (which included Black Thought and Rosario Dawson. Pictures/Article here: http://criticalmass.blogs.citypaper.net/blogs/mu/2007/10/09/black-thought-oct7-5th-to-15th-street/), and this past Friday it was an event to mark CARE's Night of Action, which fights global poverty and empowers women globally...and it was a great event. We played games, watched a video, networked and educated people on certain bills and laws currently on the US politics floor that will decide foreign aid for developing countries. Anyway, it got me thinking about global poverty and I wanted to see what your honest opinion was about this...
Do you think that is it possible AND realistic for poverty to be eliminated?
I say 'AND' because I believe anything is possible, but it is realistic?
Do you think you'll see it eliminated in your lifetime and what do you think is the main reason for poverty and serious solutions that can fight it?
Thanks,
'a pondering' Deesha

Sadly, it will probably exist forever. The rich want to stay rich, so they have to "balance the equation" in some way... _________________

Not necessarly.
Just look how much is spent in "national defense" especially in the US. If just a part of these expenses would be spent to eliminate poverty, there wouldn't be any hunger on Earth!
Once someone told me if the governements of the World would tax the profits made by speculations on the stock markets by 2%, no human being would have to suffer hunger!!! _________________

Thanks for your responses. Didn't think I'd even get 6!
Inaki - Do you think that is the only way?
and everyone...is there anything on a basic, human level that we can do as non-politicians to eliminate poverty or you feel that the only change that will be effective has to come from the politicians and trickle down to society? _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

yes i do.
today's power is the economic power, north and occidental cultures have this only want of win more and more and more, they use the rest of the world (the so called 3rd world) to earn more power and money, they support the poverty and conflicts, selling weapons to all the sides and feeding the hate to win more money. hipocrily talking about helping with food or money.
but this power, rotten economic power gots only one way, grow more and more, make the riches richer and the poors poorer, they have the power and will never give a chance to the rest.
capitalism kills. _________________

Ehhhm, not necessarly. Just look what happened in former communist and socialist countries. There the upper class lived on the back of the working class, just like anywhere else, so they were even bigger hypocrits than the western world! _________________

we have a project now in kindergarden..making parcels with clothes and some toys for kids in hungary...we know somebody who brings that stuff there.
it´s all lovely and maybe will make some kids and familys smile..but a global elimination of poverty..oh man...humans are too egoistic i am afraid
today i saw a man collecting smoked cigarrettes from the ground...he just took the white stuff..the brown he threw away, ...i could give away my money to the poor on our streets every day.. there are so many...but i don´t do it..
sometimes i feel very bad about running around in my adidasjackets and bags full of stuff while others are sitting on the ground shivering.. _________________ "Here it is...there is no way to make it better " |

It is possible. It is not realistic. As long as money keeps existing in our world, there will always be rich people and poor people.
Is such a big issue, we're talking about something that should be helped by millions and millions of people.

Of course, it is possible to change....
Unfortunately, most of politicians and companies leaders want to make us believe the contrary, and it is in their interests to keep things as they are now |

Thank you all so much for your answers.
While I do agree with what many of you say, it is a bit frustrating to read. I can't find the words to express why that is at the moment - I think a combination of feeling like the work I do and others do for impoverished people is a waste because we aren't politicians and it is perceived we won't make a huge difference or the fact that we as humans that aren't impoverished have become so dillusional that we feel that there is nothing we can do - so in turn we don't.
I can see as a whole how we feel like global poverty worlwide won't change, but what about right in our own cities or the towns where we live?
It is hard for me to accept and digest complaining about what politicians do and don't do, but yet as regular citizens we don't help those that need help in our backyards. Not saying all of you don't, but it is frustrating to me and in a way makes us as guilty as politicians who close their eyes and ignore the problems just without the power they have.
Just my personal feeling on it all and something I've been battling with for a few months now.
Sandra - you work hard for your money and while I can see where the guilt stems from, you shouldn't feel that way. To me, I am thankful that I can afford the basic necessities and few luxuries - and if I do feel a bit of guilt, I channel that into volunteering or something.
Thanks for discussing this with me - I really appreciate it _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |
