I decided to talk to the head of the community center about this movie. Not showing it, but having some type of class or lesson or something about ways to teach people about animal cruelty from pets to food. She thought it was a great idea, but thought that it should incorporate a cooking class and some type of recipe folder to go along with it, which I agree with. This way atleast they are presented alternatives that they can financially and nutritionally afford. Many of them don't have access to a computer, so looking up the info for themselves won't work.
Then we started talking about it all, and got a bit angry that programs and people aren't going into poorer neighborhoods or even to struggling families and teaching them about these things. As I stated above, this is where they are needed MOST in my opinion because from my experience this is where I've seen the most misuse of species. And places where things like eating meat are seen more as survival than habit.
So, I wanted to ask any of you if you have programs like this in your countries and cities for more unfortunate families and such? And how does it work really?
Meike, Miran or anyone else - can you also suggest a movie or documentary that is age appropriate and not as graphic for the families to watch? I won't be teaching this, just passing along to a volunteer or finding one a bit more educated on the subject.
Thank you much, Deesha
PS. When I refer to people and programs, I mean in general from global warming to recycling etc... are left out of poorer neighborhoods (on my coast anyway). Kind of makes me angry. It's like the poor are a forgotten part of society and the global picture of existence. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

Deesh, I am so happy what I am reading! That's the way to go - not moaning how bad the world is, but making a change!!
First thing that came to my mind: I doubt that a vegetarian diet is more expensive than a diet with meat. I have never compared, so I am not sure, but I am convinced that meat-meals must be more expensive than vegetables... so, I don't think it is a problem to afford a vegetarian diet.
Anyways, I think this is what you are searching for:

About EarthSave
EarthSave was founded in 1989 by John Robbins to channel the tremendous response to his book, Diet for a New America, into sustained and positive action. With nearly 40 chapters in the United States, and many others throughout the world, the organization promotes food choices that are healthy for people and for the planet, helping countless numbers to shift toward plant-based diets and to take compassionate action for all life on Earth. The organization's programs are essentially educational, working internationally, nationally, and through local chapters to get the word out and to help people discover alternatives to the Standard American Diet.
In addition to many educational activities, local EarthSave chapters often have regular potlucks for members and prospective members to meet and mix with others who are interested in issues of diet and to share tips, information, and support. EarthSave is an educational, social, and activist network with a very big heart. While no longer involved in the day-to-day activities of EarthSave, John Robbins continues to support the organization as Board Chair Emeritus. To learn more about EarthSave, to start a local EarthSave chapter, or to become a member, check out the EarthSave Web site (www.earthsave.org), or call 1-800-362-3648. |
Also, have a look at John Robbins website:
http://www.foodrevolution.org/
At the moment I don't know about movies or documentary in english... I will keep searching!

Oh .. check this out!!
http://www.peta2.com/p2vsk2_flash/
It's a flash film with pictures which are cruel as well but not so shocking as in the movie in my opinion. Packed with informations and facts.
The PETA websites are a good source for information as well, also videos.

Great Mouse - Thank you for all the information.
I am so happy to see that book is available on DVD - that is perfect!
I also have been referred to a book called 'Skinny Bitch' about eating better..the reviews have been pretty good. I like it because from what the reviews say the language is very bold and in your face - which I think a lot of people can relate to more than throwing big words around:
Amazon.com link
I have a coupon for a bookstore, so I might get it then and also see if the DVD is there. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

See the MOVIE topic for a brief review, but I wanted to put this here also because this movie isn't all about global warming - it about the ideology that we as humans have an attitude of superiority to other species, so we destroy them, their land (homes), food and etc and this kind of goes along with what we were recently discussing in here. It was mostly about global warming, but the emphasis on species and the consequences is very accentuated in the movie.

GREAT TOpic...I'd much rather read about what's going on in the world, and what we can do on an individual lovel as well as a community to change rather than gossip.
I think we all have the power to have an effect...by educating ourselves and others... For example, I had no idea the abuse and torture that happens to animals until I started watching videos, and that has had an impact on what I buy at the store as well as spreading the word to anyone who will listen.
Deesha has brought our attention to cover your lover...and I'd like to also stress to anyone reading that whether you are having a serious relationship or maybe even getting married, to please GET TESTED and insist your mate get tested for HIV. My friend's sister got married and had a baby never knowing that her spouse had infected her with HIV. This was her first lover, and the only way she could have prevented this from happening is to get tested. We're having a grass roots fundraiser for her sister to get treatment in Tanzania next week.
I think also people underestimate the power of fasting, prayer, and meditation. YOu don't have to be religious to do either, and there is power in it, especially if collectively we set a time and day to do it.
It seems that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, but some believe that soon we will have a shift in consciousness...as the age of aquarius is upon us we will be more attuned spiritually. (One hopes) |

CHECK this article by our very own Meike
http://www.geoclan.com/community/ForYouForTheAnimalsForTheWorld.htm
AND I discovered this today and thought it was great....
http://www.myspace.com/donttrigger
The Don’t Trigger Campaign
The Don't Trigger Campaign is an international anti-gun campaign produced by Urban Concepts with funding contributions from the Home Office UK, Government Office for London, Mayor of London and other government agencies. It is supported by Families for Peace, Mothers Against Violence, MaMa, Mothers Against Guns nationwide and many other partner charities. Media partners for previous campaigns are MTV, BBC 1, Channel 4 and all national press.
The aim of the campaign is to highlight the negative impact that gun crime can have on individuals, families and society. The last campaign was seen by over 5 million people with videos aired on MTV Base, Channel U and The Box. News items were shown on BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky. Don’t Trigger was included on Panorama special, Channel 4’s Guns Are Cool and MTV’s specially commissioned debate on gun crime. The campaign resouces are still being used by Amnesty International, Borough Councils, prison services and police services, youth clubs, documentaries etc.

It's about time to start thinking in bigger dimensions - we are all ONE.
|
I moved this from the Euro Championship thread, so not to get a little too off topic. I think this is a great thing to say Meike, but in my world, a utopia or even ONE feeling isn't a reality unfortunately.
When people are disrespected, displaced, and often forgotten, they become bitter and angry - and many times their situation is out of their control - so I don't blame them. They can't feel as if we are all ONE and they can't feel as if we are all equal, when in fact, they are treated as if they aren't. It's a cycle of disrespect that has to be broken by people on all levels. Anyway, back to the sports relation...
So, I know here at home we have a lot of people that are in those situations and when things come in that install pride in them, like maybe a sports situation, it unites the city and often breaks the socio-economic barriers, if that makes sense. When our football (our version) team went to the Championship, the whole city was joyful and just in great spirits. From the homeless to the rich. A spotlight was on our city, which boosted tourism, which boosted our economy. It gave some poor people jobs, as well. Although the feeling was temporary - it was good to see. It shouldn't take sports to unite our city, and its not only that that unites us. We are also uniting over the crime (to stop it).
I'm digressing, but...
I used to really believe in the ONE philosophy and still do a bit (I am part of the ONE campaign), but its hard to sometimes. I know that we all have to do our part in combatting that, but I don't expect someone in an unfortunate, crippling situation to believe that we are all one. While I believe that we are, some have been conditioned to think they below others, just like some have been conditioned to think they are above others.
Great conversation! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

i only want to say that most people may think having a pet is having a friend, but definitely they didn't choose you, and for me is just as having an slave.
for me the "why do we call some animals "pets" and others "dinner" is just a nosense.
why do you think can be the owner of an animals life, conditioning it for all his life to our crappy tecnocratic lifestyle, trapped in a jail, in a house or a city.
why we call some animals "nasty bug" and others "fluffy friend".
i'm definitely against animal cruelty, and most of the meat mercantilism is obiously treating the animals as meat since they born till they are killed, lots of scientific experiments are realized with animals in the same way, and also the production of most "beauty cosmetics" and stuff like that uses them as ingredient.
i'm against all that, i'm against the "uses" of the animals, as i think is a form of repression and torture against them.
but in opossite i don't see any "moral issue" in eating. as i don't for eating a plant, a fungi or bacteries, as i don't for a virus or bactery or an animal eating an human (animal). _________________

Since a few days; I'm interesting into egetarian lifestyle and mass meat production effetcs on environment. This thread and the vegetarian one are full of informations. Also I suggest you to watch this Simpsons episode:
http://watchthesimpsonsonline.com/movie/421-1917%20Apocalypse%20Cow.html
One of the only recent episode funny AND politically engaged. You will laugh but also think about meat production. _________________ Smile ~ |
