This question is for both of you, James and Freesia:
What are your favourite Jamiroquai songs to listen to (and maybe to perform)? Please pick one from each album plus favourite B-side or unreleased tracks!!
Which of their songs is rather "not your cup of tea" ? |
Oh, you've done it now.......how could I POSSIBLY IMAGINE picking from so many gems??!?!?!?!?!?!!?? AAAAHHHHH!!!! In terms of cups I would chuck out the window (hehe), truth be told, I don't dislike any of Jami's stuff because I absolutely love their daring to experiment with their sound, and thus far it's all been incredibly refreshing. I have no complaints!
Alright. Lemmie try n russle up some kind of list ere...
1) Emergency On Planet Earth - God, this album was so seminal, so unique, so bursting full of new and interesting flavours and layers for the time.....I guess my consistent fav from this album has got to be "Blow Your Mind". Sexy, horn-a-riffic madness ("horn" in more than one manner )...so blissful do I feel whenever I hear this....so aligned with the good vibrations. It fuels my fire, babay!!!
2) Return Of The Space Cowboy - Another old skool hit! Really can't go wrong with these tunes, can you? Oh, I'm frettin', thinking about choosing only ONE! Ok - my pick is....uhhh....goddammit!!! Bzzz, computing, computing......I'll go with "Mr Moon", Janet. I fell into a deep and lustful desire when I first heard it, and it hasn't left. Mind you, it was a difficult choice between this and Stillness, Manifest, Scam, Morning, and Space C......ARGH!!! I guess Mr Moon just sits so beautifully for me in terms of space, elements, vocal style and cosmic lyrics, brilliant chord progressions, and Stu's basswork just blows my mind....
3) Travelling Without Moving - probably my favourite album. This was the first album I bought, so I guess the memory is sweetly lingering of having a complete set of their tunes in my hands and ears! I first fell in love with Jami after seeing the "Cosmic Girl" clip on Video Hits, and that made me follow up on the rest of the catalogue, but my favourite for a long time standing is "Alright". I just love the smexy (or "smolderingly sexy", hehe) vibes - full-bodied chords, slappin' bass, tight driving drummin', oh-so-smexilicious Jay vox....shiver shiver!!! We actually do "Everyday" in our covers gigs, and everytime I manage to find some new and interesting melodies to coo; it's a brilliantly subtle song that lends itself to fantastic impro moments. The horn and string arrangements on this album are top notch - Simon Hale, I bow to the genius!
4) Synkronized - Despite what I've heard some say before (namely reviewers), I really dig this album to the core. I think (and I'm sure James would agree) that this was the album where the Jami sound reached a vital peak; the meshing of live and electro elements was beautifully complimentary, and happened to (in my opinion) bring forth one of the most lusciously and best-produced Jami albums ever. Picking a favourite is again a difficult task, but I will adhere and go with "Butterfly". This track is absolutely BREATHTAKING. The layering is both musically stunning and plays on onomatopoeia brilliantly; the allusion to the butterfly metaphor is so cleverly crafted that whenever I put this track on, I feel utterly transported. Moved beyond belief, to another universe. Amazing. The other love song "Falling" is also incredibly beautiful - again, horn and string arrangements, song structure, great drum feel, vocals - all a magical concotion that spells classic Jami.
5) A Funk Odyssey - first tour in which I saw Jami live!!! OOHH YEEEEEAAAHH!!! Hmmmm, I'm gonna try and be briefer for you - quite a new turn for the guys, much more electro, inspired NC's electro edge a great deal in fact. I'll say "Love Foolosophy", and not only because we do it at gigs (it's such a pleasure to perform, and also because it gave me room to devise some new harmonies throughout as we do a slightly more downtempo version), but because it's a well-crafted crossover into the pop single area - funky, fresh, catchy, but still distinctly jami-stamped. This album was a cornerstone in that they did a wonderful job in combining commerciality with their sound to introduce and encourage a whole new demographic of fans, and what a credit to them. Double Platinum sales....can't argue wit da fonk of that.
6) Dynamite - Wow, I've been through such a reminiscent trip and here we have arrived at the latest album already! I feel like I've been gone for years! Hehehe. Ok, album number 6 and we have some DYNAMITE tracks (lol, pardon the ridiculously obvious lame pun there) that got me excited once more. I think this album is alot more ecclectic than previous ones, and I really dig that because we get to hear how much they can stretch their intermingling of styles, tastes, preferences, and how the modern meets the old skool, especially being in the naughty century! Man, this one's surely a toss-up between Seven Days, Starchild, Tallulah and Time Won't Wait, but you're forcing my hand here you delightfully mischievous creature you, soooo........dammit. Tallulah. I love the wistful feel, and I can't get enough of that end section with the killer saxophonin' melodic journey.....
So, fav B-sides, unreleased tracks?? I have a few, and I really can't narrow it down now cause I'm feeling overwhelmed at having to make these crazy crazy single-beamed choices!!!! Hehehe! In no particular order:
1) Do That Dance
2) Slippin' N Slidin'
3) Funky Odyssey
4) Shoot The Moon
5) Space Clav
6) Bullet
I'm sure I've let a bunch of pearls out, but Que Sera Sera, lol. I hope you've enjoyed my lunatic breakdown. I think I'm having one of those right now! _________________ You're flippin' about like a sunnybeam stretch

Thanks Sandra - you're a gem
1) My favourite Tim Tam is original, but I love to "slam" it with some hot chocolate (you bite off two opposite corners and suck the hot chocolate through it - the tim tam becomes a straw and you get you get a melted chocolate surpirse!!! Mmmmm)... haven't had a tim tam in a while though... will have to go buy one now! haha.
2) To relax and free my mind... I work! Haha. I love what I do, and I take no greater pleasure than making music and talking to my friends around the world online. When I'm really tired though, I'll watch a movie or a TV show (only on DVD - no TV for me!!!).
3) I use a Mac these days. My PC blew up so I bought a new intel iMacfor the studio and I'm never going back!!! Mac's rule!!!!
4) 3 so far - Feb 1st (my birthday) 2002, Vibes on a Summers Day, Brisbane; Nov 2002, Brisbane Entertainment Centre; Feb (I think) 2006, Brisbane Riverstage. My favourite was the first one, because I was squished right up the front the whole time, and Jay jumped off the stage and grabbed my hand! _________________ I think I'll go for a wander yonder, find a place to play... |

You ARE a gem Sandriche....I love answering questions like this!!!
1) Although I've a terrible sweet tooth and try to avoid naughty things like Tim-tams as much as possible (and white chocolate raspberry bullets, fudge, pumpkin cake, lolly gobble bliss bombs....), I could never say no to them if offered - especially the double coated ones!!! Or the rare white chocolate range they used to bring out at christmas time - OH DEAR GOD!!! And yes, James is correct that the best way to eat 'em is a slam dunkin'.
2) For relaxation, I love to either lie down on the floor and listen to a meditation recording, whether it be spoken word or the soothing sounds of nature, or alternatively if it's a warm day, go and sit outside the front door and watch, listen and absorb the beauty of nature - the birds, the wind in the trees, the hummring and whirring of insects....I have a deep love and respect for nature, and it always calms me when I'm feeling tempered by little dramas or the mundane aspects of life - it is very balancing and invigorating.
3) I have been a PC user for YEARS and EARS, and so had James....that is, until he converted himself to Mac and has since been on a vigorous quest to "enlist" me, lol! Of course Macs are very stable operating systems, and I'm sure that when I get a laptop, it'll be a Macman. But for now, I'm content with my PC - it possess everything I need, and for music making I only ever use the "Reason" software to program my/our music for pre-production, then it's onto James' "BIG MAC" for the real work, hehe!
4) Ditto as per James' answer. We went to all the concerts together!!! What a buzz the first one was. I was quite content to be squished right up against the front gate in order to be as close as possible to the funky action The second one was also totally AWESOME because although it was in a huge enclosed venue and we weren't as close, we had comfort and seats to sit on AND they extended EVERY SINGLE SONG into a ten minute jam! Played all my favs, and some newer unreleased stuff which blew my mind. Nuff said I guess.....like you I'm sure, I am BLOODY EXCITED about seeing them live again!!!!!! xxx _________________ You're flippin' about like a sunnybeam stretch

.. and I thought I contributed a question which can be answered in a few words... ... Great answers guys, I know it was a challenge to pick only one song from each release, but hey... you did a great job and it seems we are on the same cosmic wavelength with our favourites.
Ok, as it seems you have fun answering questions here my next one:
What was the biggest audience you have been performing for? _________________ ~ I look up to Heaven, every star I see is mine.

You may be surprised to hear this, but we've only played 2 gigs as Nude Continuum! As we only started the act as it is now at the start of 2007, the focus has been in the studio mainly. We gig every week with the covers act to audiences ranging from 20 people to 200 people.
The BIGGEST audience we have ever performed for was about 3000 people at our FIRST Nude Continuum gig in August last year (the videos are on youtube and our myspace page). We were supporting the Sydney band Sneaky Sound System at a local gig here on the Gold Coast. They actually supported Jamiroquai on their last Aussie tour, and since then SSS have become HUUUUGE in Australia. We were lucky enough to get the gig supporting them which was great fun, and a really positive start to our gigging as Nude Continuum!

Leading up to the SSS gig was certainly nervewracking for the both of us, but speaking for myself I can safely say that I ALWAYS get nervous before a gig, particularly doing our originals - my tummy gets all squiggly and does crazy flipflop sommersaults, I sweat, tremble a little, and I usually can't eat anything much until after it's over - then I can EAT LIKE A GIANT ON STEROIDS!!!! Not to say that I don't enjoy performing, because it is where I feel most comfortable in my skin - it's my first skin really, and this person that I am at the present moment is more of the second "supplementary" skin, if that makes any reasonable sense at all, hehehe!
Because we were working to a strict timeline not only for our own organisation but for the scheduling of the acts (two supports and then SSS), we didn't have an encore prepared and just did our straight 1 hour set - pretty much all the album tracks save "Sleeping With Yourself" and an instrumental cover of the "Barbarella" theme song (on youtube and our official website). But if we were to play an encore for the mini UK tour we have planned in July, it would be our favourite current cover: sesame street's pinball number counting tune "12"!!! _________________ You're flippin' about like a sunnybeam stretch

A question for the princess, very simple but id really like to know the answer:
here it is:
who or what inspires ur look?
James!
If u wanna give ur personal answer too, ur welcome ehehheh! |
Now THAT IS a good question!!!!! Hehehe, and I've never really thought of it myself too much to be honest!!! My look just kind of evolved I imagine......I went from a very short spikey cut (which I used to wax up to make me look a bit weirder, hehe) to a more wavey straight style to the middle arena where it's a cross between both, or what you see in the promo pics. When I was a kid, I ALWAYS wanted short hair and ended up getting it cut once or twice to my shoulders but it never looked "cool" enough, so I just let it grow long again and when I was a "grown up" I tried it again and it worked better, so I kept it. Funnily enough, just about everytime I go out and I've got it styled, people walk past and say "Hey, wicked hair!" or "that's pretty out there!" or simply "I love your hair honey!" which makes me feel all sparkly n cool myself! I'm not sure who has inspired me though - I just played around instinctively and then BAM! it became what I'd call "The Freesian", lol!!! I'm weird, I know. But that be the truth of the matter right there.
If any THING were to inspire my look, I'd say nature I suppose, combined with strange alienish concepts I like to immerse myself in - perhaps best summed up in porcupines and anime heros??!?! Oh dear, I'm lost. Well, that SOUNDS about right.....I'm a woman of many colours. Many crazy colours at that!
Sorry if I couldn't answer that one very well! _________________ You're flippin' about like a sunnybeam stretch
