How do you guys write the lyrics.
Is it one of you or both?
How do you get inspiration and what are your thoughts about what you want to reach out to your audience (Enviroment, love, peace and so on...)?
|
We both write the lyrics, but usually not together. I often will come up with a concept or some rough lyrics and pass them onto Freesia to do her thing with. For instance, "Together" I wrote all the lyrics and Freesia just wrote the verse that she sings. In "People We Should Try", I cam up with the concept and title, and Freesia took it from there. In "Daedalus", I gave it to her with NO lyrics, she wrote that from scratch. In fact, it was called "Iced Groovemelon" as a working title when I gave it to her! Hahaha...
I'll let her tell you how she writes, as I'm sure its much more interesting that my process! I just write! Haha. _________________ I think I'll go for a wander yonder, find a place to play... |

okay..another question
How did your family react on your plan earning money by making music ( some parents don´t really like this idea...thinking it doesn´t work out )
Did your family and also friends support the kind of music u are making?
 |
My father is an author of novels for young adults, and adults (http://www.simonhiggins.net) and my mother is a visual artist (http://www.annie-e-studios.com) so they have been very supposrtive of me choosing a life of music since the age of about 8 or 9. They have always encouraged me and done what they can to help me. They have never once questioned my chosen path, which I am very grateful for. They are the best and most supportive parents I could hope to have
As for friends and family liking our style, my mum was the one who brought home Travelling Without Moving from the library for me, and my Mum and Dad have very eclectic taste, so they have always dug the same music as me and always really been proud of what we are doing. They have heard every step of the way, from early 4-track demos of 2001 to now. My sister is a big Jamiroquai fan, so I'm sure she likes our music too (can never never be too sure though! Haha).
As for friends, most of our friends are friends because we share a musical connection, but the few friends that we do have who are metal-heads or mod-rockers are still open-minded enough to like what we do. We choose to only surround ourselves with people who are supportive and encouraging forces in our lives, and those we can offer the same to, so its pretty unlikely that we'll ever have friends who don't dig what we do!
And besides, we have a Jamily now! Can't beat that _________________ I think I'll go for a wander yonder, find a place to play... |

My ol' mumsy and dadsy are very supportive - I guess they always have been, though I DID grow up on diverse flavours - my dad is right into classical music (which moves me, but TOO deeply and I cry nearly everytime I hear a piece, so I generally don't listen to it!!!) whilst my mother raised me on a staple diet of ABBA (yes, the swedish Euro roots in my family are always shining through, hehehe). My mum first encouraged my creative side when she dragged me to a drama academy outside of school hours and I forged my first passion with the dramatic flair - but even younger than that, I was singing in choirs at school. I only got serious with singing when I met James - everything COMPLETELY turned on it's head and I became transfixed on music making. My mum and dad were surprised as up until that point I was quite set on a career in acting and/or theatre, and although I'm still curious to pursue some of that at any time, my first love is music and they've come to understand and appreciate just how meaningful and beautiful the process is - and they've told me how they beam with pride whenever they show someone our music, so that's got to count for something spesh!!!!! Their philosophy is "as long as you love what you're doing, then we're happy and happy for you", so it's all groovin'. I have made TONS of gorgeous friends who are full on RG and soul/funk/acid jazz/nu jazz/disco/electronica heads and I love them to bits and regularly exchange music with them (not to mention YOU badasses!!! ), but I also have alot of friends who prefer other tastes - yet they are always supportive, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Don't want no bad vibes, no nasty peoples in my life - just groovy, open minded free thinking "carers n sharers" - like all of you!

Do you think that it is the fault of the concept of the hit single that made mainstream music more radio-oriented rather than album-oriented?
Princess, I see you listen to e-jazz, so I'm wondering if you ever got to hear St. Germain's "Boulevard" album, which is pretty much house music with a jazz timbre. Oh, and one more question - how do you like my avatar? You know, the little dancing dude left of my posts. |

Yeah, I think you're right about that. But I also think that within the "hit single" concept, some artists are striking the balance of commerciality and album-friendliness, as well as the essential old "artistic integrity". I think jamiroquai are definitely one of the bands who have achieved this, and I hope that we can one day too with our music.
Its a tricky business, trying to make a radio hit that will also express your creativity adequately and honestly, and also fit into the scheme of the album on the whole. I must admit though, in writing our album, never did it once occur to me to "write a hit". I just wrote what I was feeling, and looked up to my songwriting, production and performance idols as a "standard" to reach for. If one of our songs happens to be a commercial hit, then I'll be very pleased

Well actually, you have to place "Boulevard" behind "Tourist" and in front of "From Detroit to St. Germain". Also, Boulevard is great, especially the completely complete version of the album which I constructed from the 1995 EU issue, and the 2000-something US edition. Here's how it goes:
1. Deep in It;
2. Thank U Mum (4 Everything U Did);
3. Street Scene (4 Shazz);
4. Easy to Remember;
5. Sentimental Mood;
6. What's New;
7. Dub Expirience II;
8. Forget It;
9. Soul Salsa Soul;
10. Alabama Blues (Todd Edwards' vocal mix).
I don't think it's a coincidence that this synthesis of the editions can actually fit nicely onto a double LP with no tracklist changes. (A - 1/2; B - 3/4; C - 5/6/7; D - 8/9/10) |

Woweewoowaa!!! Big cheerseys guys for the St Germain info AND for diggin' the NC rehearsal clip! There's about an hour or more of footage, but there's alot of horsing around (and profanities, lol!) in the "uncut" version, so we'll try to find more of the groovin' snippets to put up, as well as some footage of the album being mastered for y'all!
