The 'Manifest Destiny' Appreciation Thread
Hello Talkers
I couldn't help but posting this.
After the resurrection of 'The Kids' in the live setlist of the current 'tour' (is there a name for it? o we can just call it the 'I-can't-decide-with-hat-to-wear in-every-concert-of-the-2008-tour'?)
I made a little comeback to the Return Of The Space Cowboy album and listened to it all over again after a loooong period without listening any JMQ album (I do get those periods from time to time, this period in particular had me going through old 70's and 60's albums... I must be turning 45 next year, but no, I don't know what the hell is going on with my ears... but that's not important right now -now or never for that matter-)
So I put special attention to the track number 5, it has always been one of my favorites but this time I closed my eyes and listened to it in full, listening carefully what was Jay saying, and paying special atention to all that beautiful instrumentation... and I still think is one of the best songs Jamiroquai have recorded, and possibly their best yet (in my opinion).
The track is so rich, the lyrics are so meaningful, the music is just perfect, those last minutes are pure gold, and I really wish we had more music like that, not only from Jamiroquai but also from other artists. Music nowadays is not as good as it used to be.
Listening 'Manifest Destiny' is like a trip, it starts without really knowing where is going to take you, slowly, the bass line repeats itself until that piano kicks in. And Jay sings in a perfect tone, with many... don't know how to say it, different tones and registers that I think he lost along the way. And it ends so high (no cannabis reference here!) it makes the song to have a meaning and, ultimately how a song should be: a beginning, a middle and an end.
And like I said earlier, the last bit is my favorite, the music is soooo good, I... I.... I get musicorgasms!

I like that song too, but my favourite is "Just Another Story" followed by "Stillness in Time"!

People hear Canned Heat and Cosmic Girl on their radio's and think that that's what Jamiroquai are all about? They couldn't be more wrong...

oh yes absolutely one of their best songs, if not THE BEST.
You have all the right elements in place, Stuart's excellent melodic bass work.
Jay's impeccable vocal (yes I know what you mean by register that is correct.)
and the lyrics are so meaningful, I mean this song almost sums up what it means to be "jamiroquai"
but remember the music used to be connected to "Let Me Believe" before Jay combined the Manifest Destiny Lyrics.
equally fantastic songs. the Let Me Believe has a little more "acid-jazz" feel with the horns.
you could possibly make one long song with both lyrics I suppose |

'Manifest Destiny' alongside 'Stillness In Time' are two state-of-the-art songs by the band, and in my opinion TROTSC is Jamiroquai's magnum opus

I love this song so much, and I love it for the same reason why I don't love King for a day that much.
Let see if I can explain myself.
For me the process to like/love a song is done by more levels, at least 2 and the 2 togheter make the all picture, the first is the musical part ( this sound so sweet to my ears, as king for a day) and the second is the lyric and this lyrics ( the shame of my anchestry by example remind me that this was written by english or partial english people) this lyric have a very strong meaning, as some of you said is political.
King for a day went wonderfully 'till first level, then...mmmm no further!
Ok all this to say that I really love 100% this song.

Manifest destiny is perhaps one of the most under-rated songs JMQ have recorded. It's fantastic in my opinion. SUCH a shame it wasn't played on the ROTSC tour 94' and 95'. Or at least not that we know of.
Although I think the most under-rated JMQ track of all time must be scam. The two minute jam at the end is a deep vibe, brilliant.
Both songs have strong messages, which really add to their power.

Manifest Destiny, in my opinion, has one of the letters deepest of the band, reeeeeally was written at a "magical" moment Jay.
and its only live version, Let Me Believe (Milano 93), is very emotive, shows the reason that Jamiroquai had come to the world.

thing about this track is it has a whole lot of meaning to me coz i feel like ive lived that and i think there are stil many Africans who are living that terror
