Hello Jamily!! I am back and so so tired.. but utterly happy!
Again, a very different jamirquai experience! Very exclusive!
Ok, here comes my review.
When I read yesterday that Nicki had massive problems to come close to the venue in Frankfurt, I decided to go early in order to check the situation.
I arrived at 4.30 pm and was a bit confused because I could park my car just next to the entrance. I went in and nobody asked me who I am. There were many busy people, preparing the hall for the event, catering, the stages, the cars... I thought: wow, I could just go to the toilet and hide and wait until the event starts. Nobody would notice! Or I could just start helping cleaning the cars and stuff... haha!! But then I decided to go the legal way and told them who I am and that I should be on the guestlist of the musicians. (Days before when I asked Derrick, he said it would be ok, he will get me in, but somehow I had problems to get in touch with him in the last days, so I wasn't sure if he'd remember!)
As they didn't have any guestlist yet, some of the organizers called another responsible person who was with the band at that moment (in the hotel). She checked back with Derrick and called back, so everything was cleared up. The guy said he would put me on the guestlist then.
As I had such a good parking place and didn't want to go away anymore, I just stayed and watched the busy people, preparing everything. I already saw the final rehearsal for the audi presentation - several times. This was all interesting to observe.
Then finally at 6.30 pm they let the first people in. We got some very yummy fingerfood and drinks - all for free. And then the presentation started. After a while I decided to go and look if the boys were already there. To my surprise I could just go backstage without anyone holding me back. I saw where the dressing rooms and the toilets for the VIPs were and then met the lady who was with the band before when we called for confirmation some hours before. I think she was something like a personal assistant for the band during their tour in Germany. She was very nice and said she will look out for Derrick to tell him that I am there now. She said then, that I should wait for 15 minutes because they were just having dinner.
So I waited next to Jay's room, who did arrive after some minutes, said shortly "hello" and dissapeared in his room, closed the doors and after a minute I heard him warming up his voice! Very cool!
I shortly saw Matt and then Derrick. We just hugged and said hello, then I went back to the stage in order to safe a good place because the gig should have started in 10 minutes.
Funny thing: I was the first person to stand in the front of the stage. I took a pic of the setlist and started getting excited!
About 10 photographers joined me in front of Jay's microphone. They promised to go away after two songs. But it was cool anyways - they didn't stand in front of me, but next to me.
Jamiroquai were coming on stage - I still was the only "normal" person in front of the stage - besides the photographers. All other people were still sitting at their tables more in the back. The moderator came and asked the people to stand up and come closer!! So weird. Someone has to come and get the people to the front...
During the gig, when the photographers have left, I really had the first 3 rows for myself. So much space to dance!!
But the audience was still in a good mood. They just prefered standing one meter behind me.
The atmosphere was so good that Jay decided to play one more song. Actually 6 songs were planned, but he said he will treat us with one more song after Travelling. While Jay was asking the boys if they wanna do Seven Days, and me starting to ask for Mr.Moon, Stillness in Time and Blow your mind, Matt started to play a view chords on the keys, Jay said to him: "Haha, nono, we won't play anything from the new album, Matt!!"
Damn, they should have done!!! But then they started with Canned Heat which was great anyways.
Jay was mentioning between two songs that he had one tear in his eye when he was seeing the result of the election of Obama. He also said two times: YES WE CAN!
About the songs... well, they did not too long versions of the songs, but still nice versions with some little details I haven't heard yet. But you can listen yourself because I have recorded a few of them. I tried to find a balance of having a good time, dancing and singing - and getting some recordings for you guys. I sometimes filmed, but it was a bit strange to stand with a camera just before Jay, filming all the time, so I often put the camera down on the stage, between the monitor speakers, so that's why you sometimes just see Jays feet. I hope you don't mind. I thought the most important thing is the music.
I recorded: Alright, Love Fool (but I only started a bit later, after the slow part was done), Travelling - I had to change batteries during this one, so it is unfotunately in 2 parts.
I am not sure if I also recorded BCD... cannot remember right now.
I will upload the clips later.
So, last song was Deeper Underground - well, not my favourite, but the audience enjoyed it.
At the end Jay introduced the bandmembers and then they left the stage.
By the way, there were no backing singers - Sola did the second voice in some songs and I couldn't resist to take over the girls' part in some songs...
While the crew started to remove the instruments from the stage, the press and photographers were starting to prepare and gather in front of one of the Audi Q5s. I thought, that they expected Jay to come out again for a shooting, and I was right. After a while Jay appeared and was posing in front of a white Audi Q5.
He also did a little interview, but the music in the back was so loud that I couldn't understand what he was saying. I recorded a part of it too, maybe some of you can read lips???
I met a really nice guy who wanted to have a pic with Jay. I found out that he is a jamiroquai fan and he was surprised to know that I am the Jamirotalk mum - he knows the forum I and invited him to register and post his picture and join us here! He promised he would!
After a while Jay dissapeard backstage again and now they were posing a security guy at the backstage entrance. I had no chance to follow this time.
I decided to get a drink. I got an "Offroad" Cocktail (non alcoholic, because I had to drive back home later on) and suddenly met Rob and Paul. We said hello, talked a little and then they went on to get a drink as well. I walked around, lurking for Derrick when suddenly Matt was standing in front of me. Very nice! I had never really talked that much with Matt in the past - but this time we had a nice chat. We were talking about the new album, about the next tour, about the next gigs in Germany and Korea. He confirmed everything we have been reading in recent german articles: The album might come out in the summer - maybe June. Then they will do several festivals in the summer and he guessed that the new album tour will start at the end of the year.
He said the album will have great songs! Very different to the last album but he seemed to be very happy with the songs so far. I said that some of us had already been listening to a few songs in Ahaus, he then explained: Yes, but we overworked them completely meanwhile - they sound very different now, he said.
They have about 25 songs from which they have to choose now.
He said this time they are having many more songs made then for the previous albums. That's different this time.
When I asked if they have a record company now, he said: yes, I think so, but I cannot really talk about it. But yes, it's a big one - the album will be pressed on CDs. You guys will get real CDs and won't have to download the songs.
Oh, and the thing in Hongkong is not a gig - it's just Jay Kay doing something there - Matt, didn't know what exactly. So, no gig in HongKong.
After a short visit to the toilet, I met Paul again and asked him if he knows where Derrick and Sola are. He said, that he saw Sola somewhere, but didn't know where Derrick was - proably behind the stage in the backstage area. I said that I couldn't go there because of the security guy. He offered to take me with him - because he has a backstage pass (of course). Ok, we arrived at the guy and as he looked kinda skeptically Paul showed his pass and asked if I he could take me with him backstage. The guy said: YOU can go, but not her.
Ok, well... Paul suggested that he will go alone and search Derrick for me. He is such a sweetheart!!
After 2 minutes Derrick came, took his arm around me and said to the security guy: Oh, it's alright - she is my guest, she can come with me!
And we went in. The guy was like... ...err.... ok...
When Paul saw me backstage he said: "Huh??? How did you get in?" And we told him that it was no problem together with Derrick. You should have seen Pauls face: "What am I doing wrong?????!!!!" Too funny!!
Then we had some drinks in their room, talking, showing pics from our kids... very nice conversations. They were all there, except Jay who was in the room next to us. I saw him at some point and waved, but I stuck to the other boys. Around midnight they had to pack their stuff and go to the hotel. I could have gone with them for another drink but decided to drive home - a 2 hours drive - as I knew I would have to get up at 6 am.
Maybe the wrong decision, but I was glad that I arrived home safe because the last hour of driving I was really really tired and had difficulties to keep my eyes open.
For me, it was a great night - a way too short gig of course - planned was 30 minutes but we ended up with 45 minutes I think, and no Jamily... but I was thinking of you and tried to bring some good memories with me for you.. I will upload the videos soon!
Nicki and Suzie... when you go really early you shouldn't have a problem to get in... I heard about a girl who made it to the Festhalle in Frankfurt because she came very early. Her name is Julia and she called me yesterday. She will register here soon, as well.
Yeah, that's it. I am still tired - only slept 3 hours. But I am having a smile on my face.

Nice work Meike! Its really great to have people able to get so close to the band these days and get info like this. I remember a time when the gap between the fans and the band was kinda w i d e...
Anyway, I'm glad to keep hearing the new album's going to be 'different'. I really think it would be good if they went out on a limb and took a decent risk. _________________
