May I?... "Hot Tequila Brown"....
Quite new to the Jamiroworld, i just discovered this hidden gem of a track on the Dynamite album...
AMAZING song, one of their best tracks IMO.... but that's a matter of taste of course...
While i really dig the music and most of the (deep) lyrics, there are some lines here which i can't really make any sense of.. Not being a native speaker, maybe somebody can help me out here...
What's that "Hot Tequila Brown" chorus about? I just don't get it... Same goes for the (obviously related) line "my black eyes turn back to brown"....
Any clues? |

This is how it was explained by Jay:
| Quote: |
– The song "Hot Tequila Brown" is about a three-day cocaine binge that almost killed you.
– Yeah, it talks about being awake after three days and wondering what the hell I'm doing. I'm watching the sun come up and not realizing the Costa Rican sun comes up pretty quick and gets pretty hot. So the bottle of brown tequila I had on the bed with my eyes lolling about came to my lips and it was like, it was like ... drinking coffee from Starbucks. This shit burned my lips off. After that, I thought, I don't want to play this game anymore. |

The Jamiroquai frontman has revealed he penned the track after a life-changing moment, which caused him to quit drugs.
He explained: "I was up for three days doing coke, killing myself. I grabbed a bottle of tequila and went gulp, gulp and it was hotter than a cup of tea. I looked in the mirror and went, 'Alright, that's enough, time to stop.'"
Jay claims he wouldn't have been able to make his latest album if he hadn't given up drugs - because he may not have survived.
He confessed to Britain's Marie Claire magazine: "To be honest, if I hadn't given up the gear, I wouldn't have even made an album. So I'm lucky to be here really. I'm lucky to be alive." |

Listening to this song after reading this thread, I don't know why I didn't pick up on it right away. I've loved the song since the first time I heard it, though, it's fantastic!
Jay has a way of perfectly capturing the drudgery of addiction in the lyrics (I am one who has also been there, although not with coke) but at the same time, the attitude the attitude that comes through is one of redemption- self-assuredness, positivity...right on, Jay.
And it has a groove that just won't quit! _________________ "Nikki Giovanni kicks Maya Angelou's ass."
