It is, because it deserves it! That's my opinion at least.

Me too! Personally, I think all tunes completely discharacterize Jamiroquai. I like discofunk, stuff like Delegation, EWF and Chic, but I don´t think that was discofunk at all. And those back vocals I think they´re cheesy. And I also like some electronica, but it has to have a vibe, stuff like electric mistress its just meaningless computer music. "Feels just like it should" and "black devil car" are particularly awfull. What the hell was that? When i first heard them I thought I had downloaded the wrong tunes.. I never bought AFo and Dynamite, but I have all the other stuff.

I just have to give 1 point for AFO because I like the jamming in "feels so good to be real", but all the rest I think it´s very bad, comparing to the first 4 albums, that still quote very very high in my musical choices, particularly some live performances.

Cheers

Woah, only two months! That's amazing, and I think TROTSC characterizes the essence of jamiroquai, personally. It's my favorite album. I saw one interview where Jay said something like... he was too out there during the space cowboy period. Like he needed to be taken back down to earth.

Other people also said he was depressed during this period. Does he mention any of this in more detail? I don't get why he would hate the album... every track is golden. Confused

Emergency On Planet Earth: 8/10 (cd) 9/10 (Vinyl version)

The Return Of the Space Cowboy: 09/10 (regular) 10/10 (Japanese Version)

Travelling Without Moving: 9/10

A Funk Odyssey: 6/10

Dynamite: 6.5/10 (Regular) 7/10 (with Time Won't Wait)

I don´t think he was depressed or anything like that. In 94, with global success and money flowing Jay only had reasons to smile. What I remember to hear in one interview was that ROTSC was made on a rush after the end of the EOPE tour, and Jay said lyrics and sound weren´t worked enough. For Jay, this is just a bad album with bad lyrics full of imperfections, made on a rush and being all the time high on Marijuana.

I never really understood that, because this is (at least for me), BY FAR, the essence of Jamiroquai, and the most jazzual, spiritual and vibed album of all.

I don´t get that too.. But I think he hates it really (I believe he mentioned this somewhere). ROTSC tunes are, by far, the most despised by Jay. On concert line ups, with exception of Space cowboy (on a heavily modified disco-commercial version), no other tune is played .. since the 90´s. He did played some at Montreaux 2003 but he seemed very bored with it. I think he feels this tunes don´t get people to move. And he played "the kids" in 2008 .. the worst tune of the album (at least for me).

As for "just another story", "half the man", "stillness in time", "mr moon","scam", "manifest destiny", "light years", "morning glory" ... totally vanished of his mind a long time ago.

My opinion is .. this album is more of a product of Zender and Smith´s mind than Jay´s mind. It is all about fender rhodes and retro synths and fabulous bass lines .. Jay just figured out (on a rush) something to sing over it.. The nicest thing was that his voice was at maximum peak by this time.

Still, lovely youtube comes for the rescue Wink

Huh, that's interesting, and it makes sense. Jay is a bit of a perfectionist & control freak, so I understand why he might dislike the album for that reason. Still, that's one of the main reasons I enjoy the album. I like that it's loose, and lyrically imprecise.

Well, the band just played JAS and light years. I can see why many of those tunes aren't played from a concert perspective. The album is very mellow, which kind of conflicts with the idea of pumping everyone up. Songs like stillness and half the man probably place a lot of stress on Jay's vocals. It seems like stillness never really got played live much...

Stu & Toby definitely had a big impact. They should reunite.... maybe record some stuff together... maybe call it Running out of Heroes.... maybe Stu can release it eventually.... maybe before I'm dead...

I love the taratata performance. It's great.

For me...it goes:

1) Travelling Without Moving - the album that most people found Jamiroquai with. I was stunned when I heard this album and it is by far my favorite album. Nearly rocks all the through - I'm not a fan of the instrumentals but...the album is as perfect as they come.
FAVORITE TRACK: Alright
LEAST FAVORITE: Didjerama

2) Dynamite - I'm not sure why the hate for this album and where it comes from. I mean the album is truly all over the place with many different styles - but nearly every track rocks. Someone on the boards once said it reminded them of an awesome mix CD and I think I agree with that assessment. The album has been in my car stereo for five years now and I still love jamming to SDISJ every summer since its release.
FAVORITE TRACK: Seven Days In Sunny June
LEAST FAVORITE: World That He Wants

3) Emergency On Planet Earth - I discovered TWM while I was living overseas and I was very glad that not long after I discovered there was a Jamiroquai day on MTV. I watched the videos with joy and was amazed by the songs which I later found were from the first album. Of course these were the 'acid jazz' days and there was lots of long instrumentals during the song...but that is also what made the music great. It made me sad that I hadn't discovered the album 4 years prior. And how can one not sing along to the chorus of Too Young To Die?
FAVORITE TRACK: Too Young To Die
LEAST FAVORITE: Music Of The Mind

4) A Funk Odyssey - A great album which flows together nicely. Quite spacey at times...but I guess that was kind of the point of the album. Not really sure why So Good To Feel Real is so short...would have loved to have a long version of that song on the album.
FAVORITE TRACK: Love Foolosophy
LEAST FAVORITE: Black Crow

5) Return of the Space Cowboy - A great album but you can feel that it was rushed. Still it is a great album to listen to all the way through even at #5.
FAVORITE TRACK: Scam
LEAST FAVORITE: Manifest Destiny

6) Synkronized - My least favorite album by far - this mess feels quite disjointed. Some good songs mixed in with alot of BLAH IMO. This is the album I've listened to least because I still, to this day, don't like it much.
FAVORITE TRACK: King for a Day
LEAST FAVORITE: Black Capricorn Day
