Artists and Narcotics. Keep it at Home?
Have you ever experienced a gig that was crap due to an Artist's addictions?
Last night I went to a local gig - billed as a funk and soul show. The "artist" ambled on stage much later than anticipated then proceeded to spin a bit of vinyl whilst throwing himself around the stage and giving a few "whoop whoops" into the mike. He was clearly enjoying himself and having fun.
NOW...whatever world this guy was in I sure wasn't there - and this is the reason for the post.
Do you think artists should refrain from taking "mind-altering" substances whilst performing if it affects the enjoyment for the audience?
I've spoken to a couple of people who've been to see big artists, in recent weeks, who have been so obviously "off their faces" whilst performing. It marred the enjoyment. One of the artists has been a "legend" in my eyes for many years so it came as a disappointment that this is how he respects his fans - giving them a below par performance for the benefit of his only personal enjoyment.
Do you think these guys should "keep it at home"?
NB: Jay excluded from this topic - I do NOT believe from the gigs I've been to apres Pori 2003 that he is under the influence of anything but pure excitement. (maybe a small smoke to calm nerves). _________________ All Hail the King |

I'm going through the concerts/ festivals I have been to and I can't seem to remember a bad performance due to intoxication. I remember a lot of great ones where they seemed doped up but that could just be a natural high some people 'suffer' from (Sandriche )
Some of the ones I knew for sure who were not just naturally high were the Fun Loving Criminals as I was with them right before they went on stage and they were smoking greens and drinking as if their lives depended on it The gig was awesome though!
I don't think I would really mind if the artist was too much in a world of his own. I have a thing for people who are either extremely doped up or just flat out crazy. I do hate drunk people. Ow and coked up people, they get way too much attitude But if you take the Doors for example, I really adore their performances when Jim was obviously five galaxies away from this world
But above I am talking about well established artists. I might feel different if I see a local one who is trying to make it, fail because he can't keep his things together. That would sadden me. |

hmmm perhaps I'm becoming too middle-aged!!!
Taking your point - I would agree it depends on the artist and expectation levels - for instance, if you went to see the Happy Mondays you'd expect nothing but Bedlam on stage!
Do you think there's a time when artists just need to slow down? In our 20's we all have fun, go crazy but we either continue the life or burn out - look what happened to poor Jim - or Jimi - amazing performances but what do we have now? _________________ All Hail the King |

Don't worry about it. It's me Like I said, I really have a thing for doped up and crazy people. I live in Brussels and see a lot of people who are stuck in some psychedelic trip. I love it! Well ofc, I wish for them they could get their shit together but they don't scare or threaten me. I hope that when I am old that I will go completely bonkers, like thinking I am Cleopatra or stuck in the past. So again, you are not middle-aged, I am weird

Well this is a hard one for me. I regret that Jim, Jimi, Janis and Kurt died because I loved all of their music. But then again they never were able to disappoint. They lived life to it's fullest and died at it's peak.
Two months ago ZZ Top and Ray Manzarek & Robby Krieger of the Doors performed here in Belgium. A colleague of mine (mid 50s), still a rocker herself, went to see them and said: 'ZZ Top and Robby should have quit performing a long time ago, it's embarrassing to see them on stage'. To me that is a much worse state to end up in. You still want so badly but you can't.
On the other hand, I have been to 3 concerts of the Rolling Stones and those guys still rock like crazy. So I guess it is hard to really pinpoint when a limit has been reached. I often think a lot depends on the entourage of an artist. They should be honest enough to say 'Stop, you are making a fool of yourself' and not just think about the $$. _________________ *Meow* |

I'm crap at the quotey things - but thumbs up to your last sentence!
Would be interesting to have this conversation again when you're my age and see what your views are.
Finding out who you are and embracing your quirks is good - not weird just original . Who wants to be a sheep?!
The artists I'm thinking of in this topic are all around my age (39) or older but of my generation. By this age maybe they could have learnt to harness their natural energies, use the force maybe? Let us see their true colours. Or maybe I'm just smug because I've learnt to enjoy myself using the "Sandriche Method"? ( )
My overriding thought last night was "what a nob". Work yourself up to be in a position where you have fans then don't enjoy the ride because you're a stupid coke-head!!! _________________ All Hail the King |

The last time James Brown came to Madrid, te concert was horrible because the Godfather of Soul was really drunk. _________________

I really hope we get to do that! That would be fun! I always love doing some retrospections to see how one evolves. I swore as a teenager I would never live to see 30 because then I would be old. I turned 30 the other month and feel cooler than ever before
Next month we will get to see how big the difference is. I will be joining you, Russ n Peggy for HVM

Over the years I have noticed that there are two types of drug users:
* the ones who use to lose themselves;
* the ones who use to get closer to themselves.
I think the second category will no matter what they use and no matter what their age is, always be able to give a kick ass performance while under influence because they stay true to themselves. I must say I am getting really curious to hear who you are talking about

Yep, this would sadden/ anger me as well. The 30 minutes he was on stage he enjoyed himself but the after effects won't be so easy to swallow down. _________________ *Meow*

Mojo that sums it up - you wait to see the guy perform then it's crap!
WinterKat - are you Evy? Will be cool to meet you . You will recognise me - I'll be the one gurning, talking a hundred miles per hour and jumping around like Tigger whilst simultaneously necking meths and shooting up... NOT!
The guy from last night was part of a cult 90's tv show and now appears on a UK soap (not known outside uk I would imagine). I pity the little old granny from last night who'd gone to see the "star" who accompanies her cocoa 3 times a week.
Maybe I am giving last night's guy a disservice - maybe he wasn't performing whilst under the influene - he could have just been totally into the music...although in my experience that doesn't usually happen with the opening chords...

I know it is wrong but the little old granny remark made me laugh out so loud I am very visual

You should have seen Granny's face - pre-bouncy man's entrance - she was all dreamy looking. I didn't get a chance to see her face during his set - I started getting the giggles and had to leave half-way through the first song.
The sound from the warm-up act (who actually played for most of the evening) was terrible so went outside for a smoke after a few songs. The soap guy was outside surrounded by hanger-on's. I said to my friend "jeez, if Granny was here she'd have an orgasm" _________________ All Hail the King |

yes...and her group of pals - who seemed to be big fans of the support band.
All I can say is that Jamiroquai should count their blessings for their front row... _________________ All Hail the King |

As I have only been to one gig with a very naggy friend ('I don't do front rows, i hate being in a sea of people'... after we have been at concerts together in the 2d row... and even a Madonna one *sigh*) I have never experienced the JMQ front row. But you can be damn sure that I will be there at HVM with you, Peggy, Russ, my friend who is coming (another one ) and other crazy people! _________________ *Meow* |

I'm not sure where I'll be at the gig - my daughter's ticket is for upstairs (all I could get) and mine is downstairs! I'll most prob swap with Nicki so she can do the whole front row thing (her ticket is upstairs) then perhaps she'll swap halfway through gig and I can come downstairs to dance. Main thing for me this time is to be able to dance - which you can't do at the front!
You'll have to queue early - I imagine our Quanna will be first in line! Perhaps we'll have to lay some bets .
AND back to topic...whilst wandering around Tesco doing my shop I came to the conclusion that's it's arrogance.
Arrogance not to give the best damn show you can. Fame-arrogance _________________ All Hail the King |
