Damn awesome post Vintage!
I love this genre... obviously. I just posted a mix filled with this sort of thing on a different topic. I was always into this music and even when I listened to other electronica more dominantly, this was always my low key favorite. Just groovin basslines that move around a lot with jazzy fender rhodes chords and playing on top of a clean house beat... ahh bliss! And yes, horns/synths are a huge plus and some even have strings!
It's very close music to Jamiroquai if you take out the electronica element and it's part of the reason I was easily captivated by Jamiroquai in the beginning.
Anyway, these are great links.. just downloaded the first one! The second one (Metro Area) I already have and have been listening to them for years now. The third link is ok, I wish it would go more places harmonically or sonically do something more interesting.. it's not bad, though!! I still like it.
The fourth is great! It DOES sound like Jamiroquai... but it's the simple fact that that sort of rhythm and that exact chord progression (the 2, 5, 1.. in this case the 5 being a flat 2 or a "tritone sub") are SUPER COMMON. It's a very winner chord progression and those dotted 8th note syncopated rhythms are a big part of jazz, disco, house, etc... therefore it's not actually by any means a ripoff of Jamiroquai. Great track, though! I'm totally downloading that one! Thank youu!! _________________ www.funkfiction.com |

Hey Funk, hope you´re doin fine! Thanks for the compliment.
I am going to listen to your set, but why don´t you throw up some links of your tastes? Or even better, do some more nice tunes like "funk up tempo"!
By the way, nice musical appreciation, wish I knew as much as you!
(wish I had more patience to learn how to play music..)

I can recommend a famous Belgian DJ, Buscemi, who also makes this kind of soulful lounge music, with a Latin twist (a bit like the old JMQ sometimes).

Nice. I was into this stuff a lot more before I delved into Jamiroquai and other more progressive funk related music. 1,3, and 4 are great. Solaris sounds really similar to Superstrut. |

...and pretty much everything this guy posts ever is awesome:
http://www.discotizer.com/
Discotizer is a DJ who posts pure house music every 2 weeks usually in the flavor of this topic (soulful/funky/disco)... very Jamiroquai related sounds. =]
I'm currently listening to his "Soulful House Vol. 20 (Funky & Soulful House)"... it's wonderful! _________________ www.funkfiction.com |
