Sorry men, but I think you're wrong... there's also a solid ammount of people here and out there that really and if I say really I do mean REALLY like S, AFO and D songs. And if you will say that those albums are not quite good (or are bad stuff) compared with EOPE,TROTSC and TW.... I will tell you: sooo why you are here?? waiting for old fashioned music?? what the f***
Jamiroquai is jamiroquai! They will not be what you want to!
If you want to feel something specific, fine! but jamiroquai is jamiroquai.
On the other hand... what do you know about me? about my feelings for this music? you are trying to make a wrong image of me writing fake things.
And let me tell you: if you ONLY like the "relaxed, carefree and the music with political content" then I have news for you:
YOU DON'T LIKE JAMIROQUAI!
Sorry men...

It's an opinion there's no right or wrong. You say Jamiroquai continues to grow and I say no -- that doesn't mean I'm not a real fan -- it means my taste for Jamiroquai is rooted in their classic eras. No one has a voice like J's which is why I stick around. If you don't like fans not embracing the new stuff and saying the old stuff is better I suggest you get over it or ignore posts by others who think or feel like I do.

And what if we don't like the new jamiroquai? is that a sin?...come on brother, you're not getting anything extra for being a fan are you? just the satisfaction, if you're getting more than we do, then bless you son, but come on...

I for one DON'T like the new jamiroquai? so what?

I respect people who get tired of this oooooldd discussion, and I also respect people that don´t like "old jmq fans" always tearing down new stuff (I suspect a lot of users here would be better without us). But cmon, remember, it´s just a matter of taste and opinion.
Not liking the new/old (whatever) direction doesn´t make us more fans than the others. I gave a lot of money to the band. However, I have been very critical about stuff released in recent years, and still, I continue to be a Jamironuts. What´s wrong with it really? Does it mean I have to give up from the band? No thanks. I just like that kind of music, and Jay and the guys were top at it.
I´m sorry for the off topic, but it´s starting to annoy me all the slamming everytime we have an opinion. It´s our opinion! Period.

What if its more about the old vibe versus the new vibe? I can agree that the earlier albums had more often than not a positivity and just that quirkiness. Smile is kind of a fantasy song, but what gives it that little difference is that quirkiness is in there. It is the salt for me. I think its a vibe thing. There were songs on RDLS and D that were... well to be honest (and not mean I think the best of this band) like I tried singing along and I thought I could never turn a friend away, etc. It makes me happy to hear this and think there is no fight in it. Maybe this is a really silly comment but the past two albums have kind of been like a friend who has been acting weird and going through some stuff but won't sit down, have a beer, and really talk about it. Well that's a long time supporter for ya Smile

Because almost every discussion in this forum sooner or later turns into the same, it's an endless debate. With the "it's my opinion/no, it's my opinion" stuff, then why discuss? Nobody is gonna change anybody's mind.
Plus, it's tiring.
For me. But what do I know? It's my opinion.

This topic isn't going anywhere. When musicians leave the band the sound alters in the quality department and usually not for the better. My opinion of course but a very popular theory. J controls more than he'd like to admit. When he catches an earful of fan disappointment: it's the record company's fault. Right always them: never you. If all the music you produce is a 100% solid -- we'd have no reason to complain about much -- but since everything now is down to the lowest common __________ -- I can't get mad at them.

It's a beautiful song, pure class, so enjoy it and please stop arguing about something that has no solution. We can be sure that this is the way the band should continue to get back to the mainstream. Fans should let them know we appreciate gems like this. We want more!!! Very Happy

What an enormous thread! I've been so busy I haven't kept up!.. and just now I finished reading all 28 pages so far!! haha *sigh of relief*

A lot of great comments here, I'll throw in my thoughts.

Like some others here, I'll also have to say Smile is the best song they have done since Dynamite and RDLS. I think the 2 songs that are comparable or closest in quality are Talulah and Fast Persuader. Otherwise, I think the last, best chronological track would have to be Picture Of My Life.

The strings intro, come on, it's STRINGS... these are almost by default always welcome. So beautiful and lush and very Jamiroquai. The chord hit by the Rhodes and snares beating in is so awesome... same with the transition with Rob and Matt floating it into the lyric section.

This truly is a sign of the return of the space cowboy we know. It still has that "new, cold, reverberated, and digital" sound, but the musical elements are all original JMQ. PURE CLASS. I love the simplicity of the track. It has a nice chord progression that has some chromaticism which is the only real sophisticated thing going on here, otherwise it relies mostly on the light and beautiful melodies/lyrics. I love how the strings play with Jay's voice. Great, appropriate, and fitting bass by Paul.. nothing complicated, just tasteful. The drums and percussion are also straight and light, in the best way, too.

Jamiroquai really got it this time. I know I've expressed disappointment with their more recent work, but at the same time I've also expressed my faith in them that they still got it an can produce great NEW music. This track so affirms that and I'm so happy to see/listen to them doing such great work.

The strings in this are wondrous. Simon Hale has been such a pivotal figure in Jamiroquai's sound... low key he is the man and deserves immense respect. I love the abuse of the "disco fall" strings sound. You know.. Canned Heat style "DOWWW!!"... strings glissing down in pitch from the tonic note... lol whatever music nerd observations.

The most infectious part of this song is Jamiroquai singing along in unison with the brass/wind instruments. I think it's an alto sax and flute with Jay's voice all in unison. Wonderful, wonderful, innovative fucking sound. I love how he sings with Fs... like Fe, Fu Fu, Fe Doooo... Really neat. Smile

"Those lips were made to kiss me" during the trumpet solo.. magical. Wouldn't say as magical as Mr Moon (but then again almost nothing is, haha). And yes, I do agree that the backing vocals are very fitting and tasteful here. I, too, haven't cared too much for the backing vocals.. but it works great in here.

If I had to associate this with an era... well it's really the NOW era. But haha, obvious things aside... it harkens to Synkronized a lot, particularly Butterfly. Butterfly has this same pacing, same reverb/dreamy quality, strings galore, and similar singing, too. That was the cool thing about Synk, they got really into strings then... which is the biggest similarity of these 2 songs. The whole Jay and instruments singing the same melody thing is very Blow Your Mind, when Jay scats along with the muted trumpet.. Lots of nice little things like this that are evident of old skool JMQ.

Lots of respect to Dye for his artwork. I, too, thought the feather was the most appropriate fit for this song... but whatever, this one's cool, too. I'm actually glad I wasn't on jamirotalk this past little bit, because perhaps I would have gotten anxious with the wait. I didn't even notice my wait or anything.. I was aware that it was coming out in a week, then put that on the back burner and just last week went and checked again for the first time and saw it's already been released... a nice pleasant surprise! I didn't even listen to it when I downloaded it right away until later in the day when I had the time to just sit down and absorb it and savor it... guess I'm just more patient now these days, haha.

Oh and Meike, I liked your artwork, too... especially the one with the buttons. So cute!

I don't really see an argument happening here. Just some mild debate that's sorta silly to begin with. Yeah, I'm one of those guys who greatly prefers old JMQ to new JMQ. But Synk and AFO are still wonderful albums. D and RDLS are the subpar ones, BUT only in comparison!! they're still good!

Smile marks a nice return and sign of good things to come. I'm really hoping for a jazz funky acid jazzy punchy raw funky Jamiroquai track next. Give me something like High Times, or Alright, or TWM! I'd also be down with spacey ROTSC (SIT, MM, SC) stuff, too... but that wouldn't be likely without Toby.

Honestly, I'm just glad Jamiroquai released something new... and totally out of no where out of the blue!! Great idea on their part to release it for free (even though all of us here would have gladly paid for it). I'm very proud and happy for them.

I blogged about the track briefly 5 days ago here: www.funkfiction.com

Amazing work Jay, Matt, Rob, Paul, Derek, Sola, and backup singers! :]
