Yawn -I'm trying to catch up on the back conversation too.
Most love 'Smile' , some don't like it, and only want the old music. What else is new? Laughing
The old stuff is golden. Untouchable. It isn't meant to come back.

Pull out an old album if you want to hear it. It's awesome.
The original Jamiroquai just can't be duplicated.

I don't listen and try to fit it into which day its sound comes from. I just listen, and like, or dislike. Call me simple.

The strings, horns and flute are awesome.
Trumpet reminds me of Chuck Mangione.

The backup singers on this one have a more engineered smooth feeling.
The backup singers on RDLS have more of a 'live' feel.
I love the backup singers' sound either way.

I think it is simple in melody (and lyrics) and complex in instrumentation. Easy on the mind.

The strings intro, come on, it's STRINGS... these are almost by default always welcome. So beautiful and lush and very Jamiroquai.

in fact, the intro ending strings are exaxctly the same as in virtual insanity.

Well, I've heard them all over 70's songs so I don't think they're jamiroquai-only, but yes, they're lovely!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great song.

Jamirowolf -Hi! Very Happy

I'm not starting anything. It's actually kind of amazing that most everybody loves this song!

And it makes you realize what the Jamiroquai sound is that the fans want.

Just an opinion!
But I think that part of what makes Smile to sound different and closer to the TWM era (among other things) is the sound quality, specially the mixture of drum and bass. Sounds warmer. Derrick sounds closer to his playing during Bullet than, let's say, Blue Skies.

Oh and yeah, Simon Hale's arrangements are among the best. And sometimes they take over the song, which is something that was lacking recently. I absolutely love that.

You're absolutely right! I was thinking the same thing. RDLS is a low-fi produced album, with a raw and maybe cold sound, as Jay wanted it to be. But all the other albums ( and I also include most songs of AFO and Dynamite) had a very warm feeling (as jazz and funk-music should be in my opinion) . And for me personally that is something I missed in RDLS.

You say Lo-fi and cold, maybe kinda clean-cut. Pull back. Nothing outrageous.
Raw- live recordings, original.

I read "Smile" was written the same day as "RDLS" and "SAFP".
I really like the song RDLS. I think it is a well-written song. I can see the two songs written from the same energy. But funny, I don't see RDLS getting rave reviews. Why?

good question, HoneyBee!

Not much is said about this unusual song, and what it means. Is it about the end of the world? We don't want to think about that. The lyrics, the music, the vocals, the mood, and tone are weaved together to create aural art.
