Just saw Elegy recently with Penelope Cruz...it was supposed to be a love story, but I didn't find it romantic at all. In fact, I thought the premise was disgusting. It's a young student who gets seduced by her much older teacher played by Ben Kingsley. There is a love scene where she looks like she wants to cry (and I don't think it's acting) I think she wanted to vomit too. I'm sorry, but I can't stand the old geezer/young girl combination. I suppose if you like Penelope Cruz enough and want to see her topless you might want to watch the movie, but if you watch movies for a good story, I would not recommend this one at all. |

C'era una volta il West
For our English speaking people here: Once upon a time in the West
For our German speaking people here: Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod
The quinessential Spaghetti Western. No what do I say? The quintessential Western by Sergio Leone. Starring Claudia Cardinale, Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda. Film from 1968.
A must see!

Rocky II
Still good, still 10/10!
I simply love Rocky I & II. (I have to check the others again before rating them.)
- First the funky music used in it.
- Second the American-Italian way Rocky and his friends talk.
- Third Rocky's character, he's simple and very kind to everyone, but not really naive, because he smells when someone is taking the Mickey out of him. (And I'm not talking about his manager! ^^) _________________

Rocky III
A little more pathetic than its predecessors. And the fact that American wrestling is known to be only a show give this movie less points.

Once again me!
Rocky IV
What an utter non-sense!
First of all, the music isn't that good anymore. But this I can understand because it's not the 70's anymore.
Second, from a current point of view, all this east-west business seems so dated! The good Yanks and the bad Soviets! Yeah, of course!
Third, while the final fight, the Soviet crowd suddenly changes its cheers for Drago to Rocky.
My question: Why? Drago hasn't done nothing nasty towards the audience... OK, in the film Rocky is the simpler, nicer, more feet-on-the-ground guy compared to his Russian opponent. But still you can't really see that during the fight.
Fourth, a boxer as ambassador of peace???
COME ON!
Fifth: I miss the tune "Gonna fly now" in that sequel!!! For me one of the best movie soundtrack tunes ever made!
My verdict: 3/10 _________________

Good review ! Rocky IV is too manichean ! The best character is Paulie ! And don't forget the fabulous Drago's line after Apollo Creed's KO "If he dies, he dies" !
Rocky V is the worst movie of the serie ! I should give 0.1/10 !
Best movie about boxing is Raging Bull (1980) by Scorsese with De Niro : it's a masterpiece ! _________________ "People find it's hard to be strong, cos' they don't know where they're coming from" |

I've just watched it, just to make myself an opinion.
And you were right, Rocky V is rather pathetic, but I won't give only 0,1/10. Although the street fight at the end is absurd, there were some little funny scenes in it.
2/10, 2 points for the funny scenes. _________________

I couldn't leave it, I also watched the 6th and final part of the Rocky saga:
Rocky Balboa
Well, Rocky V and Rocky Balboa were the 2 episodes I hadn't seen so far.
Both disappointed me.
The 6th part started so well, about the champ getting old, living a modest life in South Philly, grieving the death of his wife and hurt by his son who became distant.
I was thinking he maybe would find a young boxer he could manage, but no! It's himself who will stand again in the ring!!! This against the current heavyweight champion.
COME ON!
Sly Stallone and I suppose his character Rocky too are as old as my dad, so they're 60 years old when the film was released.
OK, a 60 years old man can still be fit, even very fit. But being able to stand 10 rounds in the ring against the current 33 years old heavyweight champion, without getting knocked out, in fact managing a draw is once again: UTTER NON-SENSE!!!
(OK, I have to admit that at a certain point I was even hoping Rocky would knock out his opponent in the final fight, because Rocky is still the humble man he used to be and his opponent an arrogant snot!)
But then there's also a quite positive thing I like about that film:
The camera work. How can I explain this? Even if the plot is weak, it's a beautiful film. And my favourite "Gonna fly now" is also featured again in its whole beauty.
So I give this film 4/10.
To conclude, here my ratings again for all 6 of the films:
Rocky: 10/10
Rocky II: 10/10
Rocky III: 8/10
Rocky IV: 1/10 (I had to revide the rating, for me the worst of all 6)
Rocky V: 2/10
Rocky Balboa: 4/10 _________________

I just watched "Intouchables", a funny and emotional French film about a paralized man and his helper.
It's just beautiful, you have to watch it if you have the chance!
