I put myself into a JMQ-silent mode for the last 4 months or so. I listened RDLS for the first time in that period, and I still think that, poor artwork and booklet aside, is a very good, strong album. "Smile" is probably their best old school song in a very long time.
The fact that the re-release has an even worse album cover, makes for a big face palm. The album is great and it deserves a lot more than that. |

So happy to finally get a US release!
The cover is not that bad.
I love the yellow buffaloman in the sunlight, or perhaps, starlight.
But blue/pink makes me think boy/girl.
I prefer purple and green.
As for a bonus track, maybe, just maybe, there'll be "Smile" hidden on it. |

Maybe a little offtopic but I would like to take the opportunity to say that this album got very poor sales compared to the previous one, - due to the lack of singles, I think -. But I can't help thinking they could have sold much more if they made a double album, with all the songs they produced during the RDLS sessions. |

I have the feeling that it will be a MASSIVE disappointment in sales..if this was a sh_tty seller globally, I can't imagine how this will impact the US any better. I hope this is an eye-opener to both JMQ and Universal.
I had a dream the other day that I met Jason and the band backstage and filled them up with some of the fan-base needs...and market needs as well. I believe JMQ are absolutely kept in Universal's roster not to make them money, but to say they have a multi-million band in their catalog...
The less than decent artwork and the worst mkt campaign in music history have proved that JMQ has lost it's leverage.
I mean, how can they delay the release with all the mp3 ease of access of this decade!!!...maybe back in 1965, but now?..unthinkable
Hopefully touring will save the day..that's if THEY ACTUALLY tour the States |

The market isn't the same as it was in 2005, or 2001. Album sales have been down for every artist, with a few exceptions of course. Sales are not as important as they were 20 years ago. Artists make money with tours. Times have changed.
Yes, the marketing strategy for RDLS hasn't been particularly good, but we had a couple of interesting stuff (the making of videos, several b-sides) and it was a lot better than the one for Dynamite.
I've been very happy overall with this album. I think is a good album (notice the I think, it's an opinion), the live performances have been outstanding and we even got deluxe versions with more tracks. The artworks are the worst part of everything, but oh well. We can't do anything but expect better ones in a future album, if there is one. |

Yeah, I just worry if sales and reception are really poor, it might kill the possibility of a US tour, and maybe even convince the guys to close up shop altogether. We'd all hate to see that, of course (and I think we've all been expecting them to call it quits for the last 10 years), but it's not inconceivable.
People really do judge albums on their covers a lot of times, and though the regular RDLS cover wasn't amazing, it certainly beats this 10-minutes-of-photoshop piece they're giving us now. Jamiroquai already has the reputation of being a relic of the 90s over here, the cover sure isn't doing anything to change that.
For me RDLS was about on par with Dynamite in terms of overall quality. I usually say Dynamite had a few great songs, mixed in with some really awful songs, while RDLS has mostly decent songs but not much in the way of a standout track. So they average out about the same.
But add it up: no memorable single, weird cover art, no major music video... it looks like this will be another non-event in the US. I just hate to see it. |

Diego, you have a point. But sales must not be disregarded, after all, Labels get most of their money this way. Yes, luckily live they're still good, although Jay's voice is fading faster than an equatorial sunset.
Freddie: I feel you man, I know there's a possibility of a tour because of the launch date delay, meaning it won't clash with the European ($$) tour. Now, again as I said and you said, that's if they tour the States...
No doubt jamiroquai's a relic of the 90's in the US and a one-hit-wonder one to make things worse...and they come up with this bull artwork and so-far dreadful marketing = bad sales = bad show attendance = less shows... |

wow, you should post your dream @ Jam.com! (under JK)
REally, today in the music business, it's all about branding.
The artists sell themselves (soul) and the image makes them bigger than life. It becomes popular to like Jamiroquai and everybody wants a bit of them. Jamiroquai and JK could do this, but I hope they just bring us their music, or suffer the consequences of Bieber & Gaga.
But I still want the US tour! |

You're right Bee..branding is huge if it's translated into revenue (tickets, clothing, gadgets and endorsements) all I can think of for Jami now is show tickets...
I'm gonna move to Houston next August. I've seen some fans from LA, you're from the D..if they come and tour the US we should meet for a concert (or two!) |

Branding is the bs of the music business today. The musicians become "freaks" rather than just musicians. But it's not new, Madonna, MJ and Elvis basically did this.
I see a new trend though, recording music can be done in the home. So some professional businesses are suffering, taking some control from the industry. i.e. the indie artists like the Black Keys. (but now their fame may make them bigger than life)
as for Jamiroquai shows, if they come to the D, Ontario or Chicago I'm there.
If not, I may consider Cali.
and of course, I had a dream last night, I posted it! |
