Here for example I took both 320kbps mp3 files of Blow Your Mind from both Discs.. As you can see, the new master is, so far I would say, just LOUD!

In light of the three re-releases coming out from Sony, I thought this was interesting. (I got the link from someone on funkin.com)

That list shows the dynamic range of each album. The EOPE actually has greater dynamic range than the CD edition. Pretty interesting.

And it looks like EOPE & TROTSC both have the greatest dynamic range, so I hope that isn't lost in the remastering process by Sony.

May as well quote the above here as it's the only post in that thread and it's being discussed here.

I posted my concerns about these remasters on the official forum a while ago*

Having heard them all now and had the chance to compare on a good system, sadly, I think I was right to worry.

Can anyone provide any information that the band or Jay had anything to do with the remasters?

The link in the quote above shows it's not just my view (and there are others in this thread), the TROTSC 1994 CD gets better marks for dynamic range than the 2013 version. Michael's graphic also shows that clearly.

A shame, another three classic albums that have been butchered so they sound loud on headphones and tiny speakers but like an aggressive wall of noise on a decent system Sad

Ah that's too bad. I suspected the sound would probably get maxed out... seems to be the way most remasters go though.

Even regular album followups seem to get louder when following bands from the 90s to the 2000s. I worry that the knowledge of the expert technicians will be lost to new generations who over compress everything.

Hope I'm wrong!! Wink

Well I finally bought the remaster of TWM.
There are few albums that define a pivotal time in your life, and for me Travelling Without Moving was one of them. I waited for its US release. It was a driving cd. The cd you played through, while driving. (yet in ’97 I didn’t realize the logo was Ferrari, and I couldn’t name one bandmember.)

It’s interesting to learn of how songs are created, and I loved reading the essay on TWM remaster.
So the 1st song recorded for TWM was “High Times”, which to me back then had such blatant lyrics. It seems the most memorable lyric (besides “Virtual Insanity is what we’re living in” ) from TWM is “You don’t need your, name it bright lights, you’re a Rock Star”!! And the essay explains this song as sort of an answer to The Space Cowboy and drug issues (and funny he addressed not doing crack cocaine –something some of us assumed b/c of the lyrics.) Cool

“Really, we’re learning how to put the boogie in by leaving stuff out.” This seems to be the most important idea forming that album. Was “Cosmic Girl”’s bass simple? I hadn’t realized back then the groove of “Use the Force “ as a Brazilian Bossa Nova. Interesting to hear “Virtual Insanity” wasn’t the focus, yet so important for that album.
The locked-in “internal rhythms” were key for “the party tracks and the chill-out ones”. Listening today, you realize the Keyboards are maybe the biggest part of that internal rhythm. The album was just smooth. It was perfect.

As for the sound of the remasters, I initially couldn’t hear enough difference (bad systems or one too many Tool concerts). I understand the concern the loudness war and distortion. But when I listen to “Spend a Lifetime” I definitely hear a cleaner, crisper voice and how the instruments come together. Not as mish-mosh. SAL is one of my favorite Jamiroquai tunes, so I do think this is an improvement.

I enjoy CD2, for the live songs in Verona. I am so happy to have “Bullet” and “Slipin’ ‘n’ Slidin’ finally and is a main reason to buy the set.

As for the Remixes, I love Virtual Insanity which puts the voice in the back, and Alright which kinda alters the voice but it’s a cool club mix. Both seem to highlight the voice giving the songs a different vibe. The “Cosmic Girl” Quaser Mix is basically a techno remix with backup vocals only but makes it feel like a Chic song. Which is not a bad thing Wink

So my approach isn't really on whether the remastering made improvement. My approach is on the whole package: the remastered versions, the live songs, previously unreleased tunes, and remixes make it worth the purchase.

Yes, i had buy Emergency On Planet Earth, The Return Of The Space cowboy and TWM (my 3 favorite albums) in remastered edition.
I can hear a big difference between the original album.
A small book, with all the stories about the songs, is included with the CDs.

I very recommend you to buy some of that remastered edition so niiiiice Cool
