JM2K's 20 Years Of Quai Discussion Topic 1#: BEST SINGLE
buffaloman_R Hello, buffaloman_R

I thought I would make an attempt that starting a new 'series of discussion topics' celebrating next year's grand 20th Anniversary of the music of Jamiroquai. For the first topic, I thought we could discuss what we all think Jamiroquai's 'Best Single' release was. Now, given they had probably the 'best single catalogue' in the beginning to end of the 'Britpop' era of popular music, the criteria I'm judging the best single by is by cover art/B-Sides. So to start this first topic off, my choice for the best jami single release is no question their 1993 UK single release of 'Emergency On Planet Earth'. Sporting a killer single cover of the optimistic image of planet earth and equally impressive B-Sides including the breath-taking 10 minute 'Revolution 1993' demo, the live Jami acoustic rendition of the MTV Wanted recording of 'If I Like It, I Do It' and finishing off with a slightly neat extended version of the single song. There were other obvious great singles in my consideration but I leave the topic to you, please post your thoughts on what your fav Jamiroquai single release of the past was and I look forward to reading all your posts. Cheers!

Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000

Without a doubt "Canned Heat".

The song speaks for itself, I think is the essential Jamiroquai song, mixing the best elements of each era.
Add a great cover art, a highly rewatchable video and you also get Wolf In Sheep's Clothing as a b-side (and their own remix for Deeper Underground, which is one of their best)

There are many great singles, but I think Canned Heat is the one that has everything.

I don't even know what's on the B-sides of the Jamiroquai singles, because I'm not such a hardcore collector as some here are.

But if I'd pick one, it's "Too young to die", because it's the song that got me hooked up to the band!

Oh man, it's sooo difficult to chose only one... Confused But I'd say the US and Australian Single of "When You Gonna Learn"

The "Didgeridoo Instrumental" is simply amazing.

I should say Space Cowboy : best single, best video and best album artwork.

Blow your mind for cover. Don't ask me why. Hooked up is a really good b side.

Canned Heat, Feels Just like it should, and Virtual Insanity tie for single release.

That's a difficult one, - singles such as Virtual Insanity, Deeper Underground, Canned Heat and Little L do appeal the most to me (especially 'cause of their disco-orientated sound). But, I think it's Little L.
The Video is really cool (well, how could it be any different with Jay's dancing), and the Disco vibe is hard to get outta my head. So yeah, I go for the Little L.

edit:

Now, after I got a little deeper in the world of Jamiroquai, I have to "change" my fave', 'though LL remains a good one.

#1 Alright alright

Awesome production!! The song spreads out an absolute carefree athmosphere and J's vocals just match the tune perfectly. Great video aswell!

#2 Canned Heat

It contains many different musical influences, but the biggest part of it remains the catchy disco vibe.
J's moves are beyond cool. Yeah, great song,- and the video is one I always love to watch.

#3 Cosmic Girl

Another one of the TWM era... Cool video!!!! Cool It always brightens up my mood and these melody-harmonies and keyboard/synthesizer are one of many reasons, why this song is so special.

#4 Stillness In Time

I go along with Curry about that one. Carefree and chilling! That's what makes this track.

#5 Virtual Insanity

Epic in every way! A masterpiece along with the awesome video!! It seems so that TWM could be my favourite record... I'll see...

#6 High Times

It contains those typical 90's beats which I really like. Those high times are really good times!

#7 Little L

Now, here we have the Little L - classy and funky disco tune. Jay just got it!

#8 When You Gonna Learn

True message! No wonder they were offered a record deal 'cause of that song! Groovy!

#9 Corner Of The Earth

Compared to the other singles of AFO, that one was really slow and went into a whole different direction. Pretty good song!

#10 Seven Days In Sunny June

Chilling athmosphere and great video! I really appreciate this tune now.

These 10 masterpieces are followed by many other great singles (there are also awesome and well produced album tracks)!!

DISCLAIMER: Very Subjective don't take too seriously : )))

This is a difficult one but I'd say "Jamiroquai - Runaway". The single almost has everything essential to the band: Funky Bass, Jazzy pianos, ridiculous chord changes, J's high pitched whines, mainstream friendly yet still has that underground feel(ofc all JMQ songs are). The way I see it when you start to love this particular single you just liked virtually all of their work(From EOPE to Dynamite to RDLS) because like a said the single has everything acidjazz-funk-lil' bitofdisco-soul well that's only one man's opinion. Very Happy

But the downside is, the single obviously lacks those instrumentals and that didgeridoo. Razz

Noteble mentions:
Too Young To Die (extended mix)
Hooked Up
When You gonna learn (JK mix)
Stillness In time
Mr. Moon
Travelling without moving
You are my love
SUPERSONIC
Butterfly
Planet home
canned heat
LITTLE L
Feel so good (dat keyboard intro defines wat JMQ is all about whatever that means lol)
Seven days in sunny june
time won't wait
electric mistress
that's not the funk i want
she's a fast persuader
Two completely diff. things

Runaway's a fantastic song, it was also the very song that closed off the band's era with Sony in 2006.

My favourite Jamiroquai song's probably Canned Heat, as Dye previously said it takes the best elements of all eras and it's extremely funky with an indulging deep feel. I also adore the songs Too Young To Die (first time I ever heard the band and it was fun to remix that back in March too), Blow your mind, Emergency On Planet Earth, Return Of The Space Cowboy, virtual Insanity, Alright, Cosmic Girl (I'd say my second favourite), Little L and Love Foolosophy.

Very hard to choose... but I say: Seven days in sunyy june!
Now I am diggin Lifeline a lot but I think it's not a Classic: still, I love the atmosphere of the song.
It´s what I feel now, i'm not trying to be objective.

Canned Heat is def in my top 5 for sure, the intro, bass solo, 1st and 3rd verses and chorus are my favorite parts in that track. That chorus is vintage J, especially the "...in my heels tonight!" bit.

All of Jamiroquai songs are unique, and each song has its special thing -
but Canned Heat really does have everything!
But it is also my favorite video.

So maybe it depends on what you fell in love with Jamiroquai for:
political message
Disco
party life

That boogie is for real
Very Happy

If we're going to go there, then I'm going to have to create a list of the songs that rubbed me the right way (in no particular order):

#1. Space Cowboy - This song doesn't leave my list. Ever. Both video and song hit the mood completely. I have my ice-tea, incense, and fan working just right and I can have this baby on loop.

#2. The Woodstock '99 performance of Planet Home. I just seriously love the way this sounds. There was something really trippy about Jay's vocals and Toby's keys that mixed so well that I swear it was spacey..but very cool.

#3. Super Sonic (video). How in the world did the man manage to look so cool in this video is beyond me. Between Jay rockin the cornrows, those shades, the headdress, and doing the robot my cool meter went off the charts. Doesn't help that Wallis' didgeridoo perfectly accented the vibe.

#4. Stillness in Time. I can listen to the song and watch the video and still be mesmerized by how carefree it sounds and looks. It's another laidback classic I can't get over. It's just one of those songs you just love.

#5. Manifest Destiny. 'nuff said.

#6. Do You Know Where You're Coming From (video). I'm sorry...but I have to say this. So forgive me for sounding like a "groupie" or some sorry excuse...but Jay dancing in front of the fireplace. Cute! lol Even though this isn't among my favorites, it's definitely an honorable mention due to that and the early '90s R&B video aesthetic.

Anyway if I had to pick a favorite...I think I'll go with Stillness in Time.
