Main Vein sample -- found!
Hello all,

First post! I'm a long-time Jam fan, I think the first song I heard was Virtual Insanity back in college. Ahh, the good old days.

Anyway... This may have been posted about before (couldn't find anything in the forums) but we have probably all seen the liner notes for AFO with regard to Main Vein and the "samples" used...

The Whispers - Imagination
Ultra High Frequency - We're On The Right Track
Lipps Inc. - Designer Music

I've done a bit of looking around.. and many copies of AFO later I've discovered that there IS a sample on at least one of the retail versions, as you can see below:

AFO - Test Pressing (which I would love to own) - Sample of "Imagination"
AFO - US Promo - no samples
AFO - UK - no samples
AFO - Australian Edition - no samples
AFO - Australian Tour Edition - 1st pressing - Sample of "Imagination"
AFO - Australian Tour Edition - no samples
AFO - Asian Tour Edition - no samples
AFO - Canadian Edition - Sample of "Imagination"

The sample in question is the first 5 seconds of Imagination by The Whispers, in particular the long brass note. This appears in the chorus of Main Vein. (IMO, it sounds better with the sample!)

I understand there were licensing reasons why the samples were taken out. I've been searching for a while now to try and find out what samples were in the song originally.

I've found this one, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on the other two? And whether any other versions of Main Vein (UK promo, etc) differ from these versions.

(As a side-note, every single version of the song is a slightly different length, usually by milliseconds. Did Sony re-create the master in each region? who knows...)

Just thought this might be interesting to similarly sample-crazy people like me Smile

So after coming back to this I found what the second sample is.

"We're On The Right Track" -- the snare fill at the start is used at the end of every second phrase in Main Vein. Don't know why i didn't notice it before. If you listen, the snare fill sounds different to the normal snare in Main Vein.

Now trying to find where Designer Music is sampled Smile

I think WOTRT sample is strings up at 0:45 right at the start of the chorus of MV
