that's because Madonna and U2 needed media to sell albums. |
...and Jamiroquai also benefited a lot from that system in the 90's! TV, radio stations and record labels made kings and queens back then.
Now it's not the case anymore, for better or worse : online buzz, communications campaigns and that kind of stuff are just as important. Media still do have influence, but it's rather unlikely they'll massively support Jamiroquai.
So, with probably limited media support and no online presence, it's going to be difficult for the band to make people know a new album is out (and even harder selling it). They'd better come in with HUGE hits! The band really has little time left to "heat things up" communication-wise!
And, even though I've diverged from my original post, it's still disappointing for fans to be left out with no news for years, while the trend is (virtual) proximity, contact and exchange. Most of us have been fans for 10, 15, 20 years or more. Being totally ignored when we're not needed ain't cool. If a "friend" of yours only gives you news when he needs a place to crash/borrow money/whatever, you'd don't want to keep him as a friend! |

I have to agree.
Online marketing is everything in this day and age. MTV videos are gone now.
They really need social media on their side. |

Yeah, I do secondly agree with this, and I would love to see the band invest or organize fans, whom are highly active in social media to work in concert with each in promoting the new Jamiroquai album/singles. I have been myself VERY active on Reddit and I have contemplated floating the idea to the bandmembers of getting whatever record label they signed with for the new album to embrace a 'social media pronged' marketing strategy for promotions, we all don't want a repeat of the truncated nearly non-existent marketing of the last Jami album "Rock Dust Light Star". If I hear anything pertaining to this from the band, I will pass it on and hopefully we can all organize ourselves on our individualized social media portals help get the hype for the new Jamiroquai material near the release dates. Be sure to check out this thread on the popular r/music subreddit and leave your picks for your favorite Jamiroquai album/single in it's comment section (of course if your active on Reddit), my first of many attempts to build up 8th Jami Hype..Cheers!:

Even though the marketing for RDLS wasn't good (the artwork for every release was particularly horrible), I gotta give credit to those black & white videos they posted recording in the studio. That is exactly the kind of stuff I'd like to see more of. |

They will need to make their presence, maybe get their song in a soundtrack or linked to something else would be helpful. (But be cautious to what it's linked to!) But I think if the song(s) is good it will make it on the radio. Ray Parker Jr. was a sexy, soulful singer, yet his most famous song was "Ghostbusters"!

I guess I don't get this part, what is it you want? something from Jamiroquai? I'm seriously not being rude, just wondering. They do have a webpage and each member (except Jay) has a FB or Twitter page that gives info. I think the liner notes have thanked the fans.
Spell out what you want, that's how you get it. |

A small 30 seconds interview of Jay saying "Hi guys, we know it's been a while, but we're recording a new album, it's gonna be massive and I can't wait to share it with you all" can be recorded in no time and would have made a huge difference. Small audio snippets, a couple of pictures in the studio, any sign of consideration for the fans would have been a great satisfaction to all of us. |
As I wrote in my first message, thank god the bandmembers give their own info aside from official communication! (well, I only mentionned Paul back then, but he's not the only one, you're right). If it wasn't for them, we would have no idea of what's going on. What I'm expecting is, indeed, official communication from Jamiroquai creating a bond with fans and telling them that new things will be here soon.
Everyone sees things differently in their "relationship" with the band, and maybe I'm expecting too much, but, today, I want more than an album being dropped off every 5 years (with or without a "Thank you" in the liner notes), a tour, and X years of silence until we're needed to purchase CDs and gig tickets.
Everyone got crazy when they dropped "Smile", everyone remembers the black and white videos from the recording of RDLS, even the pretty useless videos of Jay driving his car were cool. It's a sign that says "hey, I'm here and I haven't forgotten you!".
This is what I want and I think that's what the band needs to start building a buzz : things that people will want to share with their friends on social networks, things people will talk about (instead of my friends asking "Jamiroquai, he disappeared, didn't he?*"
(*however hard I try, they still think it's one guy!)
I hope this sheds a clearer light on my thoughts. And whatever my words may sound like, I'm still a fan (wouldn't be here otherwise!) and, each in our own way, we want what's best for the band! |

They don't "owe" us anything. It would be nice though, a gesture, some proof of life in between three years.
And, just to be clear, I'm not talking about the bandmembers (which they do post a lot of stuff and are the only source of information we have), is the Official Jamiroquai page/site/everything that should be doing some (if not all) of that work. Posting YouTube videos every four weeks that we've seen a million times is just poor community management.
The official site is completely abandoned. If there's an interview or a social event, all questions are about those damn cars.
I'm sure when the new album approaches, the activity will increase of course but like I said earlier in another post, they really need a proper marketing/management team. |

sorry Honeybee you are getting some passionate fans back
all said is great. one must remember that this is Jay's band. He hires others. Thankful the band has remained solid for so many years in a row unlike other bands similar. But if I had the ability to say one thing to Jay at this moment it would be...."Stop paying other fucking people to spread the word about an album you later will say that you are 'excited' about."
we needs fans like everyone here so they see what they are missing without any bias. |

When Jay Kay broke his contract with Sony probably one of the reason to do it was leaving all the virulent music business. Nowadays Jamiroquai is not on the wave, but do they really want to be on that position?
Somehow I think Jamiroquai now is like a cult band. They do their music, they have freedom to do it. They still gain enough attention to sold out their concerts, because if you are a music lover probably you will know they offer a great live set.
I'm sure that most of you, if Jamiroquai starts to be a mass event again, will start to complain about a lot of newbies who don't know the first albums, madness in their concerts, not 'truly' fans...
It is how it is, and if Jamiroquai is how it is nowadays, it's becuase Jay/the band have been looking for this, I suppose. I don't think they are in a bad position really. But of course, I think they should tour over the US, but that's in hands of the promoters... _________________

I personally don't want them to become "big and commercial" again, I was talking about the marketing for the fans they already have. |
