Looks like bits of the moon buggy from the Runaway video in the part where the AFO hat gets found. _________________

Nice work zeioIIDX, I reckon what you've got down is pretty-well right, but true to form, it's not easy to make out every word JK sings! I have a feeling the bits in bold are slight corrections, but see what you think...

So here are the lyrics as I can interpret them lol. I had trouble making out a word or two so this might not be 100% correct but enjoy nonetheless!
Am I love? Every heart is beatin'
I'm all love! Uh-can't you feel me feelin'?
Take my hand! Become like a junkie.
I'm an ice-cold man.
I'm an ice-cold man. *distorted*
Why am I cryin' for you?
All this love I've felt for you
Has gone away to another place. (It's a digital life)
I put my faith in a digital world
But they've given me eyes without a face.
I'd steel/steal the moon on server/silver lights.
Remind myself I am someone.
My soul is low and raw/wrought tonight. (I'm automaton)
I'm so tough. Uh-can't you see me runnin'?
See, I can touch. Can you feel me comin'?
I see the world and cry for freedom.
These metal eyes, they can't disguise
The fact that I need something to believe in.
But they're not crying for you!
I said goodbye to the world I knew
And took off into inner space. (It's a digital life)
Weren't you the ones who promised me
A very different place?
I power up, get my program set
And tilt my head toward the sun.
Inside I know, I'm null and void (I'm automaton)
Automaton (x4)
Hey, you got me down underground
Gettin' holed up in my cyber lounge
As if I had time to break that down. (Automaton)
Whatever you can do I can override/overwrite it
Got a million ways to synthesize it.
Digital android, I can fight it (Fight it out)
Automaton (It's a digital life)
Automaton (Digital life)
Automaton (A digital life)
Automaton
Feel like the man who said to us
That this is not where I belong.
They rule my life from a metal box that's windowless
And I wonder where it all goes wrong.
Maybe this dream will stay alive
But can the madness be undone?
Am I the new intelligence?
I'm automaton (x7)
It's a digital life (x2)
You know I need something I can hold onto, hold onto (You were all I knew)
I need something I can hold onto, hold onto (This was all I knew) |
|
I reckon that the start of the final chorus is...
"Feel like the man who fell to earth,
But this is not where I belong"
Which - if it is what he's singing - is a nice nod to David Bowie.
Nice one JMQ |

Absolutely, SO COOL!!!
Great job, didn't notice the buggy from the Runaway video
Favourite parts: the 'subway dance' & his reaction when he finds the hat

"Cloud 9" is definitely the next single.
From the store site: "‘Automaton’ Vinyl is a double heavyweight Gatefold vinyl, printed inners, consisting of twelve tracks including singles, ‘Automaton’ and ‘Cloud 9’ and a download code for Redemption of Digital album." |

Yeah I saw that. I guess they've been sat waiting, waiting, and waiting some more for this day. |

I think I finally figured out that one line!! He doesn't sing "I see the world in claws of freedom"
I believe he says "I see the world and cry for freedom"
I thought claws of freedom made sense in an ironic way because we aren't truly free when we are enslaved to technology. But it also makes sense to hear Jay say he sees the world in the state it's in and he cries for freedom from it all.
I think it makes sense because in the next two lines, Jay says
These metal eyes, they can't disguise
The fact that I need something to believe in.
and to me, since he is playing an android/alien thing in the song/video, he is saying that despite being this shell of a person, he can't fully hide his emotions. It's like saying even a robot can see how screwed up things have become. |
You gonna re-edit/re-post your Automaton lyrics here Zeio? I would like to screencap them and post them on r/jamiroquai.. |
Oh yes, I actually edited my interpretation of the lyrics last night! _________________ If it ain't no natural law, then you can keep your regulations. 'Cause if I like it, I do it. |

Huge fan since "Return of the Space Cowboy", but haven't paid much attention since Funk Odyssey (released on 9/11/01 in the US, and I still went to the record shop in DC to pick it up despite all the terror threats). Pretty sure that album bombed in the US because of its unfortunate release date, and I don't think the band have paid much mind to the US audience since. Sad, really.
That said, I'm ecstatic about this new single. I love the band's organic jazz/funk roots as much as the next fan, but I've also always been a huge fan of electro (Afrika Bambaataa, Cybotron, Egyptian Lover etc.) and electronic music in general so this is right up my alley too. The band have hinted at this style over the years, but this is full-on robo-funk. Yeah, it's vibing on what Daft Punk have been doing, but frankly Jamiroquai was doing the pop-bass funk ages before "Get Lucky". If anything, Daft Punk ripped Jamiroquai off.
My only initial gripe about the single was the "rap" breakdown. Cheesey to my ears, but it's growing on me. Also, is "automaton" in England pronounced "auto-MAY-ton" instead of "auto-MUH-ton"? To American ears, it makes the hook sound like "I'm a tomato, I'm a tomato, I'm a tomato" (pronounced in the US "toe-MAY-toe") and people on Youtube have made that joke too. Oh, well.
Also, anybody catch the lyrical reference of "eyes without a face". That's the title of the French horror/sci-fi film released in 1960, and Billy Idol's hit single from 1982. Jay Kay sings the line almost exactly like Billy Idol did. Can't be a coincidence. Really digging all the sly references here, from the Blade Runner font, to Bowie's "man who feel to earth" in the video, to Billy Idol etc. Can't wait for the whole album! |

I hooked up the laptop to my big speakers and the track sounds very good. Sure, it has the electronic feel, but the chorus sounds very powerful. |
