I hooked up the laptop to my big speakers and the track sounds very good. Sure, it has the electronic feel, but the chorus sounds very powerful. |
Played this through my massive Polk speakers and amp at high volume and it sounds great to my ears. There's some crunch and distortion in the high-hats but that's intentional.
Been listening to a bunch of new singles from bands across multiple genres today and "Automaton" is the standout by far, and the best sounding. |

My only initial gripe about the single was the "rap" breakdown. Cheesey to my ears, but it's growing on me. Also, is "automaton" in England pronounced "auto-MAY-ton" instead of "auto-MUH-ton"? To American ears, it makes the hook sound like "I'm a tomato, I'm a tomato, I'm a tomato" (pronounced in the US "toe-MAY-toe") and people on Youtube have made that joke too. Oh, well.
|
I think it's a play on words sort of thing, Automating/Automaton. In a world full of AI and advanced technology everything is automated and as a result we're becoming lifeless, soulless automatons. My take anyway. |

Yeah, I get the point/theme of the song. My question was whether "automaton" is pronounced "auto-MAY-ton" in England.
For example Jay Kay pronounces the "oo" in "boogie" in "Canned Heat" like "food" or "movie" (emphasis on the "ooooo" sound) instead of "book" or "cook", because that's just the pronunciation in England.
So, is "automaton" pronounced "auto-MAY-ton" in England? I honestly don't know.
I highly doubt the "may" pronunciation in the song is meant to imply a combination of the words "automaton" and "automation" (pronounced "auto-MAY-shun" in the US). |

the implication in what i last posted is that it is not pronounced that way there, and the reason it's pronounced the way it is in the song is to do the play on words. it definitely has a short "a" sound. |

When I listened to Automaton for the first time I was a bit disappointed to be honest, but the song really grew on me and now I damn like it! I think it's a very catchy song, at least if you listen to it a couple of times
And it's also great to hear a new Jamiro single after 6 long years haha _________________ ...because these are high times that we are livin' in...

Fixed the lyrics after listening to the song again and seeing some people's suggestions
In our love, every heart is beatin'.
I'm all love! Uh-can't you feel me feelin'?
Take my hand! I'm cold like a junkie.
I'm an ice-cold man.
I'm an ice-cold man. *distorted*
Why am I cryin' for you?
All this love I felt for you
Has gone away to another place. (It's a digital life)
I put my faith in a digital world
But they've given me eyes without a face.
I'd steal the moon on silver nights.
Remind myself I am someone.
My soul is null and void tonight. (I'm automaton)
I'm so tough. Uh-can't you see me runnin'?
See, I can touch. Can you feel me comin'?
I see the world and cry for freedom.
These metal eyes, they can't disguise
The fact that I need something to believe in.
But then I drug him for you!
I said goodbye to the world I knew
And took off into inner space. (It's a digital life)
Weren't you the ones who promised me
A very different place?
I've powered up, get my program set
And tilt my head toward the sun.
Inside I know, I'm null and void (I'm automaton)
Automaton (x4)
Hey, you got me down underground
Gettin' holed up in my cyber lounge
As if I had time to break that down. (Automaton)
Whatever you can do I can override it
Got a million ways to synthesize it.
Digital android, I can fight it (Fight it out)
Automaton (It's a digital life)
Automaton (Digital life)
Automaton (A digital life)
Automaton
Feel like a man who fell to Earth
Like this is not where I belong.
They rule my life from a metal box that's windowless
And I wonder where it all goes wrong.
Maybe this dream will stay alive
But can the madness be undone?
Am I the new intelligence?
I'm automaton (x7)
It's a digital life (x2)
You know I need something I can hold onto, hold onto (You were all I knew)
I need something I can hold onto, hold onto (This was all I knew) _________________ If it ain't no natural law, then you can keep your regulations. 'Cause if I like it, I do it.

Well that's about your perceived sound quality that's being boasted by your setup, but ANYONE who really understands about compression and dynamic range in sound will get what I mean. The loudness war took it's toll on the band. _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

Just checked the Dynamic Range using the recommended program of this site and a lossless file i bough from 7Digital online store. The result is the worst of them all. DR is about 6!!

Not surprised. If you have a copy of A Funk Odyssey test pressing edition, scan it with your program. The compression is much better despite it being a vbr mp3 rip. Sometimes artists release early promo versions of their albums before they've been mastered/compressed. I've been wondering if there are similar promos out there for other Jamiroquai albums. |

It's true, the new song is very loud... You can see how compressed it's been made in the image below. I hear they call it 'brickwalling' when the amplitude gets pushed right out to the limits like that. And zooming in on some of the peaks reveals that clipping has occurred in some places too.
This is the 320kbps MP3 bought from the Google Play Music store:
Do we assume this has been done deliberately? Like, to suit the style of music rather than because it's the 'done thing' these days? We all know how particular Jay is about the details of his stuff... It will be interesting to compare the digital downloads with the CD and vinyl releases when the album comes out. _________________
