This one is actually from that 15 disc set we've talked about previously. I never noticed the difference before your post just now - I had to go and check my copy! Laughing

BudFox,

I believe those FLAC files you downloaded are sourced from the original EOPE CD release. That means the original album files sounded the best to your ears then?

If your FLACs are transcode from mp3s, quality will be shitty regardless of the lossless compression codec. FLAC in itself doesn't mean quality.

Do you know the lineage ? Are you sure your FLACs are sourced from original CDs ? That's the question.

True. BudFox if they contain log files to show their rip method it's pretty easy to verify the quality. Take it a step further and look at the file in audacity to make sure the frequency isn't prematurely cut off.

Cool. You'll want to click on the black down-pointed arrow (or triangle) by the name of the song file and select spectrogram.

Posted image has been reduced in size. Size of original image (692739 KB) is 1297 x 767 pixels. Click image to view full size and better quality!

After it loads, you'll want to right click on the area to the immediate left of the graph, where the Hz are listed (2k, 5k, 8k, etc) and click until it's zoomed out all the way.

If the spectrogram analysis shows the frequencies go above the 22khz threshold then you most likely have a legit FLAC rip of the music. If it maxes out below that then you likely have a lossy rip.

EDIT: Also a good article on analyzing the file types: https://www.kjetilbm.net/blogg/buying-music-from-cd-baby-and-what-format-to-choose/

So not a true FLAC.
I Try to get a better FLAC..

Dave Brubeck - Take Five (241 Mb FLAC )
It has 88 K hz

If anybody didn't know this track, just hear it..

It seems to be a real FLAC, it touches the 22kHz mark. Also, have in mind that this rule that it HAVE to pass 22kHz is not true. There are limitations in the CD standard(Red Book) that make it impossible to hold any freq above 22kHz.

This "rule" is used because MP3s have a default cutoff frequency at 20kHz(no mp3 have any freq above it) so it's generally a good indicator when a FLAC have anything above that. But even though it's not a certainty, you really need log files.

This other file that you have is what is considered "hi-res", but in reality 99% of the freqs above 30kHz are white noise, so not they're not music really.

If you want to know more, here is a good article:https://interview.passtheheadphones.me/spectrals.shtml
