Sure is Dye.
Does anyone else think the release of these two singles is impeccably calculated? Release an experimental track (Automaton) that captures an audience with it's unique sound, but also leaves most craving for funk and soul - then deliver a track two weeks later with exactly that.
It's genius... |
That's exactly what I thought.
They did it well this time.
I still can't forgive the singles for RDLS... (Blue Skies is still a WTF for me) |

So it seems that the "kind of Little L" strings are on both Automaton and Cloud 9 songs (probably same sample) |
I thought that very same thing! |

There's an interview where Jay says he didn't really like Blue Skies but people kept saying it was good and he just went with it. |

Useless trivia: Anyone notice the clouds going different directions in the two Cloud 9 teasers? _________________

That's interesting, another thing that got my attention is that Smile didn't make to the album, what makes me wonder if the same people who selected the singles also selected the tracks for the album. |

Did you preorder the album? or did you just bought the single? |

Well in that same interview he said the tracks on the album were a mix of the ones that they liked and the ones that the label liked.
Don't know about the singles selection, but I guess the label has some influence too. |

A bit underwhelming to my ears, lyrically and instrumentally. "Automaton" hooked me immediately and sounded like a fresh direction. "Cloud 9" could be a leftover from the last couple albums. Just my initial opinion. I'm sure it'll grow on me. |

I felt the same way the first time, like it lacked something... some punch. But the second time I listened to it I really liked it so I guess it will be my new soundtrack! I have played Automaton over a 100 times already so I need something new!

Well, I think they released these two singles being so different to please as much fans as they could, the first one being experimental and going through a new and different direction, and the second one for the fans expecting a classic funk sound.
I like Automaton better than this one as well |

I completely disagree.
Being so experienced in funk music, making a funky track is much easier for them than going through a different direction.
Cloud 9 sound good, but has nothing new and there are no surprises. It's a safe place for them.
I can feel much more effort put on making Automaton disruptive and catchy, and might not be well received by all the fans, but the numbers show the track is doing well and is generally well received.

Agreed. People's preference for "Automaton" vs "Cloud 9" seems like a general indicator of what kind of fan they are. I think people who favor "Cloud 9" are happier when the band stays within a certain framework. That's fine, but I prefer when bands progress and experiment a bit. "Cloud 9" is a bit safe and well within what Jamiroquai have done for many years. |

That's a good point. I like both songs to be honest, if the album goes back and forth between those two styles, then I'm happy. |
