If they had kept doing the same style of the first album over and over again, they wouldn't have lasted this long, that's what I think. The acid jazz movement is over, the 90's are over, all the musicians from that era are gone. It is time to move on (it has been for a long time).
Personally, as much as I love those first albums, they would've been stuck in Incognito mode, basically doing the same album and styles for decades.
Jay was smart enough to slightly change the sound from one album to the other. They didn't drastically change, but their sound has evolved and I think is gonna be quite fascinating to listen to Automaton in its entirety. |

Well...it's definitely formatted for the Disco circuit. I'm sure it'll be remixed over and over again because, admittedly, it leaves a lot open for more things to be done with it.
I'm personally not on board with it. It's not quite my style. That, or I'm tired of him sticking to disco.
I feel that so far he is delivering on the promise that this album should have everything for everyone. So there will, no doubt, be songs that I'm not crazy about.
Oh well. |

Fortunately I like their Disco/Funk very much and I'm very glad that they dropped that 60's rock style from RDLS.
Just hope they include something like "Smile" which is Jamiroquai at some of its best.
Anyway, great to have Jay and the crew back! |

| Here, I'll say it then: Superfresh is (imo) a legitimately bad disco song. The sort of thing that made people hate disco in America. Moroder/Donna Summer-era stuff with lame harmonization and lyrics, and a cheesy, galloping bass line. Possibly more relevant around the time Random Access Memories was released, but pretty much inexplicable now. I suppose I could see it being improved in a live performance. Hoping this will be the only stinker on the new album. |
Yeah after hearing the extended sample, on the BBC site, I'm inclined to agree that this is a pretty disposable song. Hopefully the other songs turn out to be winners (I don't expect an entire album of great tracks from any artist, even Jamiroquai). |

Radio 2 played We Can Do It today at the same time of day as yesterday's Superfresh. It's a nice little number and reminds me of Hey Floyd ever so slightly.

We can do it is a sweet track- it does have that hey floyd vibe to it. If anyone is interested check out radio 2. Skip to 1.53 |

Thanks a lot!
I think Hey Floyd is way richer than this one, but from the snippets we heard I already knew this was going to be my least favourite.
Wanna listen to Night in the Jungle, Vitamin and Carla. |

the songs from the album so far, in a 10 scale, for me:
automaton: 4,5/10
cloud 9: 5/10
superfresh: 3/10
we can do it: 4,5/10

Agreed, I'm glad that BBC are playing my least preferred tracks from the snippets.
Automaton has weirdly grown on me A LOT, Cloud 9 also. The simplicity of We Can Do It's lyrics and the repetitiveness of them make me think that it won't end of being a grower. Superfresh I think is a decent track.
What annoys me about We Can Do It & Superfresh is that the minute they start to get interesting, they fade out. Extended versions could save the tracks. |

Well, You have to define "gone". Incognito, Brand New Heavies and James Taylor Quartet are Still jazzing it up! I don't think acid jazz is dead. I believe it has changed, evolved.
In my opinión Jamiroquai has indeed changed their style, distanced themselves from Acid Jazz and I don't think they are coming back. It's a good change though! _________________ **I'M AUTOMATON** |

I'm so excited about this new album... (NOT) Haven't heard the last 2 tracks yet but based on purely the short samples these would be my grades too

We Can Do It reminds me just slightly of Drifting Along from TWM. I prefer Drifting Along but a lot of the time, I end up skipping that track when listening to TWM and We Can Do It seems like one I'll skip when listening to Automaton in full. It's not bad, I like the bass line but the way Jay sings in this one makes it tough to understand what he's actually saying lol and I just feel like the band surely had much better tracks they could have swapped for We Can Do It. That sounds harsh but I'd be lying if I said there isn't a single song I skip on any Jamiroquai album lol. So it's okay
Songs I skip when listening to the albums in full:
EoPE - Hooked Up, Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop
RoTSC - Light Years (I only like the funky sections)
TWM - Drifting Along, Didjerama
Synkronized - Black Capricorn Day, Destitute Illusions
AFO - Stop Don't Panic, Twenty Zero One
Dynamite - FJLIS (sometimes), World That He Wants, Hot Tequila Brown
RDLS - Hurtin', Blue Skies, Goodbye To My Dancer, Never Gonna Be Another _________________ If it ain't no natural law, then you can keep your regulations. 'Cause if I like it, I do it. |
