I guess it's a fine line between speaking up with an unpopular opinion and raining on everyone's parade. I hope I'll be as blown away as others... first disappointment for me was this morning with those weird little vocoder bits at the end of the breakdowns in "Something About You", very out of place to me. That song kicks ass apart from those couple moments, but right now it bothers me so much I don't know how much I'll listen to it.
T-minus 70 minutes and counting. |

Here´s my review,
Before bashing me be aware that I am quite a picky and fussy listener that never liked the direction since Dynamite, so obviously I had no expectations at all ...
For me, this album is like a mixture of electronic crap, and improved Dynamite. Jay´s singing style is somehow the opposite of the wide-range melodic singer he was, often being monotonous and annoying (as seen before) and his lyrics are once again very poor and shallow. But this time there are definitely better chorus and bridges. Overall, some listenable stuff, but in no possible way a “to listen again” album and a time survivor. 4/10.
- [Shake it on] Mix of Cerrone and electronic / industrial disco. It has a flow to it but is average and too processed. 3/10
- [Automaton] Crap elecronic, protools stuff. Chorus sounds like cheesy eurodisco. 0/10
- [Cloud 9] A Funk Odyssey Jamiroquai. Shallow lyrics, chorus is stolen from East Coast's "The Rock". 4/10
- [Superfresh] More bad disco. There is good and bad disco, and this is plain bad. Once again sounds like the worst side of Cerrone. 0/10
- [Hot property] Dynamite type of electronica, slightly improved. The chorus reminds me of some stuff of Kleeer in the 80´s. 3/10
- [Something about you] Once again improved Dynamite kind of song. Bonus points for chorus, it´s simple but melodic. 4/10
- [Summer girl] Best tune of the album, hands down. Simple but well crafted groove, sounds a bit like soul education. Once again shallow lyrics, but Jay´s voice fits the track nicely. Massive hit if this would be the single. 6/10
- [Nights out in the jungle] Meaningless filler. 0/10
- [Dr. Buzz] Jay ´s singing is annoying, struggling at the same note. But the chorus is cool and melodic. Too bad they haven´t done a proper jazz break for this song, it deserved it. 6/10
- [We can do it] Another filler, tremendously boring and un-melodic. 1/10
- [Vitamin] Matt Johnson´s attempt to sound like the acid side of Toby - successful at some degree I guess (it emulates quite well Toby´s Moog Source). It also sounds like some Afronaught / Kaidi Tatham stuff. The flow is cool, but the chorus kind of kills it, especially those damn backing singers. 6/10
- [Carla] The moogy bass synth is clearly ripped of Stevie´s Talking Book (eg, “You´ve got it bad girl”). Simple, but listenable and well put together music. 5/10 |
When the track Automaton come out i say it was embarassing, still think that.
I haven't listen 2 times Superfresh sorry for that but for me is shit.
We can do it is so boring...
But let me say Dr.Buzz and Vitamin, Summer Girl are better than a lot of tracks of the OLD Jamiroquai. Jay reinvented the style but i can recognize their sound. I don't think we would like Blow Your Mind, Light Years or Virtual Insanity in 2017 |

Alright! I just listened the album for the first time. And I have to say that I really liked it, but I do think that JK's voice was a bit buried under layers of effects and the Synth and bass.
BTW I loved the bass on this album!
I liked all of the songs, some more than others. I have to admit that I did like Nights out in the Jungle! I loved the use of scratching and JK's singing that reminded me of "Do it like we usted to do". The beat Is repetitive yes, but I believe it was the point of the song just like it was on "Didgin' Out" from EOPE AND even "morning glory"!
But oh well, the album is great! Worth the wait!
April Is going to be a great month! _________________ **I'M AUTOMATON** |

Hello,
I've been to the Paris concert this week. Nice to see back the band.
I found really interesting the solo of Matt on Something About You, and Carla. I heard some jazz sound sometimes. Jay could and should scat more and more next time, like he did on TWM on 2002 in Montreux (One of the best song i've ever heard).
But it was already nice ... And what a lovely Mr Moon !
I waited midnight last night, and listenned just the samples before to buy the album and vinyl today.
The only thing that i could say now, some songs may be too short. The album seems really great. It's a logical evolution of the style of Jamiroquai.
I'm very proud to listen this group since its beginnings.
And i'm sure the future bootlegs will be really BIG !!
Jamiroquai is back. _________________ Bercy 2011 !! ... What else ?! |

I'm annoyed this morning. I started to think that maybe those songs would be better without Jay's voice.
Can't get this thought out of my head now. |

Obviously it is my taste, and there is nothing more subjective ... But for instance, Return of the space cowboy is a 9/10 for me ... Currently I am listening to Aquarian Dream Fantasy album, is also a 9/10 .. _________________ Away from soliloquies of sadness

OK - so I've just listened to the album for the first time.
Too early to review it... but I will say this general comment.
It does sound / feel like the Matt Johnson show now. And although this is no bad thing (i.e. I loved his "Radio Silence / Travelogue" Album)... this does feel like a bit of a hostile takeover of the JMQ sound for me.
Anyway, Carla is an early favourite & Night Out In The Jungle is the early skip (sounds a little like Cristobal Tapia De Veer... but just not fully realised)
But hooray for new music!!!! |

Whilst sometimes I also think this... if it weren't for Jay, these fabulous group of musicians wouldn't be assembled for our enjoyment!
So we just gotta deal with it!
Having said this, an instrumental would be nice! Listened to Space Clav the other day... aaaahhh! |

How polite and educated you are. Isn´t a forum supposed to be democratic? If this is a "say yes" room please give me a favour and delete my account. I couldn´t care more of a rat´s ass. _________________ Away from soliloquies of sadness

Hot damn. Quality album. I bet you'd enjoy Patrice Rushen if you don't already listen to her. |

I always thought it would be cool if the band released double albums with the first part containing the commercial/vocal version and then doing a jazzier / funkier instrumental take of the whole album on the other side. |
