Have listened twice this morning. First impressions: it's a bit samey. Which is a bit disappointing. It sort of settles for the disco feel in most songs, and with one or two exceptions, the songs aren't very memorable.

The sound is great, I like the production, but it does try and stretch one idea over a whole album.

A lot of the songs are devoid of meaning; Hot Property, Superfresh, We Can Do It... they might as well not have lyrics. It's such a shame that a once talented writer and singular lyrical voice has been reduced to this.

The much hyped songs like Dr Buzz and Vitamin are probably the most disappointing - Dr Buzz is a nice groove but doesn't do much with it; Vitamin is just all over the place.

So, I guess 5/10 now. But that might go up or down depending on my mood. On the plus side it's more upbeat and dancey than anything since AFO I'd reckon. It just depends on how much variation you'd want for an album. Like, if ROTSC contained 12 Scams or Mr Moons we wouldn't feel the same way we do about it. Wink

WOW THIS ALBUM. UNBELIEVABLE.

Instant standouts are Shake It On, Hot Property, Summer Girl, Dr Buzz, and Vitamin. Basically all the ones we didn't hear on the radio! Funny how that works.... the deep tracks are the best. And when I say standouts, I basically mean instant classics. Seriously. Can't believe I'm having that reaction.

Loving the new synth sounds. Some super cool new effects / callbacks to awesome stuff they haven't used before (a lot of cool 80s sounds).

No downright dreadful tracks on this album, though I guess Nights Out in the Jungle is probably the weakest tune for me.

I think it's maybe the most experimental album they've ever had (hard to put my finger on what makes me say that, but it feels like they're being a bit more daring here). Definitely a few missteps here and there, but that's to be expected with an experimental outing. And I know "experimental" is usually a word that worries me. But they earn it this time. The abrupt, unexpected turns here and there, it finally works... the kind of weird turns songs like "Black Devil Car" tried and the whole song just fell apart, this time around they've really nailed it.

The album feels very cohesive, probably the most cohesive since Synkronized. And the singles seem to make more sense to me in the context of the album. Honestly it feels more concept than any other album before it.

Shake It On -- felt like I was hearing "Just Another Story" for the first time. So many awesome surprises. Great way to start the album. Love the slow burn start, and then they really earn the huge chorus. And the cool outro, so luxuriously 70s. Big strings, big piano chords. LOVE IT. Probably my favorite of the album.

Hot Property -- Takes a minute to get to the real juice but OH MY GOD I LOVE THE CHORUS. I'm living for those chords, and that synth choice is perfect (sounds like Zelda on original Nintendo, anyone else hear that?). Could do without the Russian woman. Cool sudden bass breakdown. This is the Jamiroquai I fell in love with... spending a nice amount of time doing something cool instrumentally and giving the vocals a rest for a second. But oh man, the chorus.

Summer Girl -- This is a Bond theme, and for some reason evokes images of Ipanema. Again, luxuriating in the 70s lounge feel. Another great chorus, super catchy. Great strings. "She likes to talk politics." Feels tongue in cheek, though I'm not sure it is. Cool horns, strings, and vintage synths to close it out. Excellent.

Dr Buzz -- Another solid chorus. More great synth choices. Some lyrical choices I might have rethought. Some of the sudden turns are a bit more jarring on this one. But the second half of the song sort of makes up for most of the awkwardness in the first half. Particularly that five quick chords thing at the end, pretty interesting. Very end reminds of the album version of Space Cowboy (which, for American fans, led straight into Stillness in Time... I expected Stillness in Time to come on immediately after this track).

Vitamin -- This track is super cool. Feels modern and retro at the same time, and classic Jamiroquai. Another groovy chorus. Jazz piano is a nice addition. This one and Hot Property have chords that put me into pure ecstasy. The chords are Jamiroquai.

Migrated this from the review thread, which is languishing without any readers over in the jamiro-talk forum: http://www.jamirotalk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=163784#163784

It's funny how some users don't mind in using words like crap and shit to describe the album, which is basically the effort of many people. But they get sensitive and legitimately offended over criticism on their comments

They could totally use words like flat, repetitive, bland or boring, but instead they choose to be offensive.

To those users: I think your comments weren't mean to share your opinions, I think you were aiming to provoque the reaction of the people who did like the album. You're just being TOXIC.

If you want to prove me wrong, stop being offensive at others people tastes. I will respect your opinion when you stop being dirispectful

And if you are so eager to get your account removed, like Vintage73, I politely invite you to just stop posting, if you really don't care, go ahead and leave. But you won't, because you are just a troll.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing true!

(i'm listening to the album for the first time in my fathers spotify premium)

well i'm glad the bass is again more prominent that the guitar in the album.
It's also great to hear Derrick doing his job.
Whole albums is coherent and makes you move your body, wich is maybe the main target for Jay this time.
Little review to come when i finish listening

I haven't been so in love with an album since Synkronized when I discovered them 18 years ago.
I can't stop listening to Hot Property.

Exactly. And while I'm in the group that thinks Jamiroquai has never released an album as good as the first 3 ones, I honestly think Hot Property is better than:

• Whatever It Is I Just Can't Stop
• Didgin' Out
• Half the Man
• Light Years (except for the chorus)

And Vitamin (or Do It Like We Used to Do, or Time Won't Wait) is even better than Emergency on Planet Earth and If I Like It I Do It. Too bad that saxophone solo is so uninspired!

It's not on the Japanese Spotify, so it seems you really do have to buy the record for now. I'm sure it'll get jailbroken before too long, these things usually do Smile

This reaction is the problem Jay has had as a songwriter his entire career - he just can't seem to get people to listen. Whereas you get people like Marina and the Diamonds who also contrast a pop sound with a thoughtful lyric, but seem to get away with it because they're not mega global successful.

It seems the minute JMQ hit the really big time they weren't credited with being able to say anything. But as fans, I really think you owe it to yourselves to go back to every song you think is vacant and really listen to what he's saying. If you still don't get it, read the lyric and then listen again.

It's a fatal mistake with this stuff to just go by the surface and Jay says as much every time a record comes out, and once again he did for Automaton - listen to his comments and see if you can hear what he talks about in the songs yourselves > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuucvVaDcGw

Nice to hear that said, I think there is a very strong Roger Moore vibe in the album, think The Spy Who Loved Me, which is high praise from me Smile

Really surprised to see this said again. It's Jazz, come on people, dig the discord Smile

I don't disagree with this but I prefer it to the Rob show, which gave us Dynamite and RDLS. Those weren't bad albums, but I feel like the band got a bit derailed after AFO.

Overall I am diggin Automaton, although I feel that the title track is the one that fits the least on this album.

I can agree with that too.

I suppose what I'm articulating (in a round about way) is that I still miss Toby. I love almost everything Matt brings to the table (incredible musician) , but in quite a superficial way, the 'new' synth sounds he brings now jar with me more than when Rob was fresh to the band.

But remembering back, it did take me a while to get used to the new sound courtesy of Rob! (Lovefool was not my fav to begin with, for example)

Evolution innit.

just a first time listen mini review. Of course all songs will grow on me, but this, AND PEOPLE MUST KNOW, happens with all the songs in the universe: your brain likes things already know. In other hands, you can notice new little treasures in each song you don't get first time you listen to them.
This opinion is based on music and jay's melodys on voice, not in lyrics.

shake it on: nice disco song, strong chorus 6/10
automaton: jamiroquai approach to electronic, better than lot of actual electronic artists, catchy pop chorus (blend between jamiroquai style and any top 40 song) 4,5/10
cloud 9: quite plain disco song, like any standard 70's track by kleer, sister sledge...nice to hear but not a killer song 5/10
superfresh: pretty cheesy disco song, it has nice things on it and certainly danceable but overall not a good song IMO 3/10
hot property: kind of 90's videogame flavour, poor disco track, Matt everywhere4,5/10
something about you: THAT bassbeat AGAIN, it works anyway. good mood. 5,5/10
summer girl: warm summer feeling disco-funk track, quite nice 6/10
Nights out in the jungle: pfffffff...what to say...for a man that had spent a year going by night to the jungle it doesn't feel like the theme have nailed the song flavour...the noises in the track are quite shamy, bells? c'mon! 3/10
Dr Buzz: nice chorus, some miss and hits on it, not a masterpiece for me. 6/10
we can do it: jamiroquai doing reggae is always alright with me; i like the simplicity of this song and jay's "a la Bob marley " voice again, all that keyboard arrangements that appear taken out from the monsters family songtheme kill the song 4,5/10 maybe 5/10
vitamin: i always like jamiroquai doing this "Dexter Wansel" like Style, i would liked it more with another production and sounds (maybe less dark?) but it's ok 6,5/10
Carla: autmatic (and obvious) travel to Stevie's work, the song reminds me to the samba on "italia 90" game from megadrive wich i love! Very Happy, the fact that is a song for his doughter, with direct message and that i can relate to it being a father of a little baby myslef makes extra points for me. The song is alright, again a bit dark(extrange that starts fading from minute 4). 6,5/7

overall, as I said before i think it has a lot of internal coherence wich i think is good for an album (unlike Dynamite and RDLS) and offers a nice listen. I like more the feeling of the whole album, than song by song, if i can explain it that way. I can't identify no instant classic on it. 6/10

Anyway, big marketing communication on the album.

Highlight on Spotify and iTunes. Ads on Shazam and Jamiroquai logo when loading for a title, and advertising bar on the iPhone App.

In France, we have TV spot for the album. (Maybe another Taratata live show ?? ) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHhKeU8WP4k

The album is incredible! This is Jamiroquai's strongest, most consistent album since 'A Funk Odyssey'.
