Jay's voice
I always wondered why so many people compare Jay's voice with Steve Wonders. I for myself don't see any similarity between them. I really don't like Steve Wonder's voice because for me it's too high and squeaky .
What do you think?? |

Nope
Hi Butterfly and Didgin,
the reason I originally got interested in Jamiroquai WAS that the singer reminded me so much of ... Stewie Wonder. It was the song "Too young die", if I remember well.
I never thought "this guy copies S.Wonder". It was more like "this guy sounds as good as Stevie". Which is a big compliment in my opinion.
I do not know if you are familiar with S.Wonder's wonderful double LP "Songs in the key of life", back in the late 70's (or was it beginning of 80's?) I warmly recommand it. You might understand why some people see similarities between JK and SW.
If you reffer to the later work of SW, such as his songs "Ebony and Ivory" or "Happy Birthday", I understand that you do not appreciate him. For my part, I fancy to see in SW's "soul" years one of the source of Jamiroquai's music.
I too find JK's voice high and also feminine, still wonderful and original. My husband just says "this guy has a weird way of singing". |

Hi sunrayvibe,
you're right, I don't know the early things of Stevie Wonder - maybe I should buy some of that old stuff (ebay?) and see how it is. |

Or ...
Hi Butterfly;
the cheapest way is... to go to your local store and try to find the CD. I know there is a CD version of this LP. Maybe they have it on stock and you can hear it on the headphones before buying it.

jay v.Stevie
The first time I heard Jamiroquai(too yong to die), I couldn't figure out if it was a new S.Wonder single (i like SW, so it's a compliment) or...a female singer!!! I thought, if this is a new SW song, the guy's getting really good and groovy. But the funny thing is I did not think for a minute that it could be a new band with a male lead singer!!!
Peolple always want to compare. it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it has limitations. We don't need labels, and Jay sure doesn't!
Let's enjoy both Jamiroquai AND Stevie...

et la morale de l'histoire...
Hi ,
I am so glad to hear your point of view Kate because ... it is so different than mine .
No really, it shows how RICH the music of Jamiroquai is. It is so interesting to learn about how other fans have felt or of which music they thought during their first contact with Jamiroquai. |

too young to die is THE ultimate 'dude tryin to sound like stevie' song. in fact when i first found out it was done by a band called jamiroquai, i spent ages looking for the original stevie song which they sampled the chorus from. heheheh, of course i failed
to be frank i find stevie's voice a lot nicer to listen to... it's a lot more warm, more poignant. i can't possibly listen to jay kay's singing non-stop for 24 hours... it's rather nasal, really gets my nerves frazzled. |

shocked?
why are you shocked, chilla?
Can you really listen Jay's voice for hours? I can listen to J music for hours and hours, but that means also instrumentals. After a while every voice annoys me |

Jay's vocalisicous vocals!
Hello everyone. :jay2:
Yep, I can agree with everyone on this topic, Jay Kay's voice has and always will have a uncanny likeness to Stevie Wonder, though Jay's voice is a bit on the hoarse side. Jay's voice has gone some wear & tear through the years, it may be a little scratchy, but at least his voice isn't as hoarse as Liam Gallagher's, man he sounds like he's moaning instead of singing..lol! But realizing the horror of possibly losing his voice by ways heroin, he's taking better care of himself and two magical vocal cords we have grown to love! Thanks for listening and Peace!
Sincerely,

hi didgin
hey didgin, i've been... um, around... got a bit caught up with studies and all... exam finals coming next week! CRRRAAP!
i like the old days when jay's voice could reach all the super-duper high notes, and it was crystal clear. now he's gone all raspy... hmm, i guess it's sexier... nice for different reasons. but these days it's harder for him to hit the exact notes for live performances. curse that cocaine.
chilla i know it may sound awkward but its true... i think it has to take a true jamiroquai fan to say that. if i just liked them a bit i wouldn't have listened to them that much to have anything to complain about, you know what i mean? (of course varying from one person to another, all bands are seen with their flaws... but as long as you accept them then it certainly doesn't stop you from being a fan.) don't get me wrong, i'm still very much the jamirodisciple i've given the impression to others that i am.
jamiroFan i must agree... its amazing that oasis have come this far as singers who can't sing... |

it gives no doubt jks voice sounded in former times better.
davina, if I like to understand your logic, but its controversial somehow
I don't want to doubt at you, being a fan
I was just surprised
seeming that I am a extrem J music listener
I must hard think over which songs accidentally come between my J-songs
