Talking in English.
hey guys.
i was just wondering about this:
some people have been talking in languages other than english (eg. spanish).
I am not being racist. all i am saying is that it is very annoying when someone posts info in italian/spanish/any other language and then you have to wait for them to translate/someone else to translate.
is english the standard language around here?
PS: I'm not racist. |

Hi there,
it's right, english should be the standard language at Jamirotalk, because this forum is meant to be an international fan-forum to share informations and passion about our favourite band. So, everyone should be able to understand what it is said.
It's not nice to speak in another language during a running english conversation.
Comments to a jamirotalk-user in a different language should be done in private messages. When you have something interesting to say for all, then write in English, please.
I don't mind if you open a special thread in the "Jamily"-section to talk in another language about jamiroquai and fan-related stuff with fans from your county, though. A title could be " Spanish-speaking fan-meeting" or something like that...
Thanks for bringing this up, PietroChoko!

man i think your being racist... and sorry for that...
sometimes we get excited and we wanna talk in our languages.... if you want, you can go here http://babelfish.altavista.com/
and then translate... it only takes 20 seconds... i don't know if it's right... but it's a nice solution...
so sorry but you're being racist... you could hav wrote on the topic you saw another language: Plaase, post the translations... but if now you're looking for the webmasters, i think you don't wanna see more languages than english... and i'm so sad about that... cos spanish, french, italian, and a lot of others, are important as English is!!!
Just think about it... and Cosmic Mouse, if you think this post was a very bad idea, just delete it.... then i'll know i was wrong...
I just want peace with this... i don't wanna get in trouble... Bye... see you! _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

Just a consideration: here, every single guy who's "foreign" knows English and even some word in American slang!
All the other people can not speak or can not understand the other languages.....SHAME!!!!! (just kidding!!!!!).
It's right what Edgar said: sometimes we want to come back to our origin , but it's so sporadic and occasional......may be just few phrases for refrain the dialogue.... _________________

I don't think that it's a good idea to use babelfish, because most of the time this translation doesn't make sense.
My opinion is, that if you want to express yourself in your language - you just do it in your pms.
I know that sometimes it's very hard to express yourself in English (for me it's the same) and you cannot tell exactly what you mean... but that's life!!!
So come on guys - let's do it in English - and we all understand (more or less )

woah woah woah guys and girls.
i mean in the sense of this: if a person says something in another language, then they can just put the translation in the same post.
i'm not going for something about banning people who talk a different language in a topic. for example, if you guys set up a little topic where you talk/lyric your thoughts in a different language (where it would be easier to talk), and i came in and made an english post saying "please translate" or something, then that would be racist in that context (and pretty rude too).
plus, like Butterfly In June said, babelfish doesnt do it right. it translates, sure, but it doesnt use proper grammar aswell (i tried to translate an italian joke i got from my cousin in italy and it came out all wrong.)
even CosmicMouse says if u wanna start a topic in another language:

note this though: i'm not some forum nazi where i'm gonna go around and tell everyoneto translate as soon as they press submit.
No i want peace too, but saying that i'm "racist" with no backing, FunkEducation, is a bit rude.

i'm not looking for the webmasters for any action.
in the "Rules of this forum" it doesnt say what language is to be used around here (but i suppose english must've come in automatically).
just wanted an addition to the rules, not accusations.
in summary: I'm not racist. |

(PietroChocko, sorry for misspelling your name... )
1. It's a good idea to put this subject into the forum rules. It's indeed missing.
2. English should be the main language for everyone understandable, other languages are tollerated:
a) in private messages
b) in special topics with a significant topic title
c) as little comments - (or "insider jokes"),
but should be used rarely and not for conversations.
This has nothing to do with racism - so please stop those comments.
It's just a question of keeping this forum usefull and interesting for all fans. That's all.
As english isn't my native language, I am asking one of the english speaking moderators, to forumulate this subject into a rule and will add it to the Jamirotalk.net-Rules.

Spot on PietroChocko and Mouse. No-one is being racist - it is a common rule in all international events that English is the language used - there's nothing racist in that at all. Eg, International Air Traffic Control use English at the language - is that racist?... I would say "NO". What it does ensure is that everyone understands everyone.
Take Care everyone

Hey PietroChocko
I accept that the english is the first languaje in the world.
I accept that we should speak in english.
But in my case I just speak a little bit of english, and if there is something that i want to explain in spanish because I dont know how to do it in english, I think that is the best form.
For example the topic of "the Spot of Jonnie walker" appears IN SPANISH.
The meaning of the spot can change by the languaje, is for that , that i think the best solution is explaining it on spanish and try to do it english too.
I use the translator everyday, because my english is bad. I think that if you have to use it once a week is not too much work for you, because the spanish messages dont appear everyday...

Racism?? What happened here??
Let's put it this way: if you want to post in spanish, do it in a special spanish topic (there are a few out there, and if there's not, just create it); do it in private messages; do it and then put the translation of it in the same post. It's not so difficult guys
I speak spanish (from Argentina ) and I only wrote in spanish on a few posts (I think they were from the 'Reviews for spanish fans' or something like it), and I joined the forum knowing that english was the used language, and I accept it.
Maybe we should put it on the forum rules, Mouse.

Done, Diego!
I added it to the Jamirotalk.net rules:
http://www.jamirotalk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1809
New added rules appear in the colour red.
Nothing more to say from my side

Edgar, Edgar ... you won't get in trouble ... - your post won't be deleted ..., but you'll have to understand or at least accept the following:
1. Language is independent of race. Therefore asking for English as sole language has nothing to do with racism.
2. Considering what harm racism has done to mankind in history and still does today, calling someone a racist unjustifiably is stupid. (But emphasizing to often, that one is not a racist, is not much smarter ... - it looks suspicious )
3. Jamirotalk is an English speaking fan community. Its core is a moderated forum. Our moderators can not moderate the forum, if posts are written in Italian, Spanish or (as consequent further development of this thought) even in Kisuaeli.
Kind regards from Germany

true.
i just emphasized this point (the "not being racist" thing) because i'd been kicked off another forum for being "racist" (i asked someone to translate something from arabic to english and they accused me of being "racist"). i was just tying up any loose ends, but youre right funkmaster, it is a bit suspicious .
anyways thanxalot y'all for understanding. it does help! |

Harmony is re-established!! And good points Miran about being careful about calling someone racist & also resolutely denying being one... Couldn't have said it better myself!!
