Jamiroquai Info: A Journey Behind The Scenes!
Hello Jamirotalkers,

I know you may not want to read such long posts, but this one is worth it. With a little help of the funkin site and it's 'news archive', I decided to read all of it and I discovered interesting things that I didn't know of! Some examples:
Did you know that a remix album was planned after the release of TWM? And which name it had? Did you know which was the title for the album before 'Synkronized'? Which famous actress dated with Jay Kay? That a single called 'Synkronized' was going to be released in 2000? Well, this and SO MUCH more I discovered and here it is everything in detail (specially for the newbies here), enjoy cause I did!!!!!!!:

-In the UK, sales of Travelling Without Moving increased after the event of the Brit Awards were Jamiroquai & Diana Ross featured.

-Mel B from the Spice Girls once said 'Virtual Insanity' was one of her favorites videos.

-The sound at the very start of Virtual Insanity is sampled from the film Alien. It's the sound of the ship's computer powering up.

-A remix album, going to be titled as 'Interpretations From Beyond', was supposely to be release after Travelling Without Moving, containing different remixes from their 3 previous albums (including a smooth remix of 'Scam', The Young Disciples remixed 'When You Gonna Learn', Jamie Myerson's 'Drifting Along', etc, among others by the band themselves). Later an official statement said 'The plans for a remix album have been put on hold'. One of the reasons why the remix album has been delayed is due to the lack of time that the band have had available to work on the album as they'd love to do some of the remixes themselves. After that, the official site said that 'no plans of the remix album for the moment'.

-They have been asked to write music for two movies - The Avengers and Scream II. I guess this never happened.

-During an interview on MTV in September 1997, the band said that they were looking for an October 1998 release for their fourth album.

-The recording of 'High Times' is slighly different on the version with both bonus tracks. Listening carefully, this version has a sample of the words "High Times" appearing in the background at regular intervals.

-When 'Travelling Without Moving' jumped from number 75 to 29 after the MTV Awards, sales went up by 92 percent in one week.

-Before 'High Times', 'Everyday' and 'TWM' were the main choices for the fourth single out of TWM.

-Jay Kay and Winona Ryder were a couple! But they didn't have enough time for each other with Jay touring all the time and Winona making movies.

-The Synkronized album was originally called Symphonised, and then Synkronised.

-'Deeper Underground' was originally called 'Godzilla Is A Killer'. Hollywood executives asked for a change because 'Godzilla Is A Killer' represented a 'negative image' of the tower-block tall monster.

- On the Emergency On Planet Earth albums, the European version of 'If I Like It, I Do It' is 4:52 long and the US version is 4:35. The booklets state the correct times, but the back of both releases say 4:35.

-Jay Kay once planned on opening a restaurant in London called the 'Space Cowboy Cafe'.

-According to The Sun newspaper (UK), Jay Kay claimed that he had been attacked by a female ghost at his mansion. The ghost, known as the Green Lady pinned him down to his bed.

-Melanie Blatt said that her biggest dream is to marry Jay Kay! She said "One day I will fly myself at him in the street to kiss him and I'll do it again until he marries me!" She was with bassist Stuart Zender at that time (she still is right?), when did she said that?

-This is the OFFICIAL STATEMENT from Stuart Zender (reasons for leaving the band): Many different stories may arise from the news that I have decided to leave Jamiroquai, so I've decided to let the public know my version. After 6+ years of being with the group, I felt the time had come when I should move on. I've always felt that being a team player was vital to any band, and this didn't happen with the group. We were all involved with the writing and production of the music, but at the end of the day, credit was with one person. As our success increased, the monetary splits suddenly decreased. My commitment to the band was never an issue with me, but when you do commit and contribute to the long hours in making an album a success, and the gruelling tours that follow, compensation should be distributed fairly. The decision to leave was not an easy one, as after 6 years friendships have grown. I know there are opportunities out there for me, where I will be recognised for my musical capabilities, but most of all to be part of a team. Melanie and I are eagerly looking forward to the birth of our daughter next month. She has been very supportive in my decision, and we are both going to play an integral part in our daughter's life. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the fans for their dedication and support, and wish Jamiroquai continued success. Stuart Zender.

-Jamiroquai had been offered to compose a song for the Euro 2000 Soccer Competition but the band turned it down because they were too busy.

-Nick Fyffe used to be in a Jamiroquai cover band.

-Jay once went to a Spice Girl's concert.

-Jay dedicated the meaning of songs 'Butterfly', 'Falling' and 'Where Do We Go From Here' to Denise Van Outen.

-Some stations edited the part of the video 'Canned Heat' where there's a couple in bed.

-The Synkronized Tour from 1999 was originally called 'Boogie Forever'.

-In a 1999 interview, this is what Jay says about the name Jamiroquai - 'I'd come in one night and seen this spaghetti western playing on TV. I was stoned. There were the horses'- Kay imitates the sound of jetting hoofbeats - 'the Indians, and the horns. I could see that all these elements were so like my hat!' Instantly, he conflated the name of a Vietnam-era helicopter (the Bell 1H1V Iroquois), the Native-American reference ('I did my reading and found out it was part of the six tribes who hang around the New York region'), and the notion of jamming to get to that fairly magical made-up name, Jamiroquai. 'I could almost see it then', Kay recalls, 'Ladies and gentlemen, Jamiroquai!'. Also relating to the name of the band, in that magazine Ministry it said that Jamiroquai could have its roots in the fact that Jay was taking acid when he thought of it - so the name was formed in his deranged and stoned mind.

-On Radio 1(november 1999 Jay was interviewed and asked what the next single release would be. He said that they are planning to record and release the title track from Synkronized (which is not on the album) for a UK release around April 2000.
-In 2000, when Jay was asked if he was already working in a new album, he said that the band was busy preparing a new single (Synkronized) and it was going to be crazy!. (What happened with this?? I want to hear 'Synkronized'!!!!!!!).

-According to an interview on Japanese radio station J-wave, Jay and Toby spoke about the title of the Japanese Synkronized CD bonus track (Getinfunky). Jay originally intended on calling it 'Groovyyy' however, Toby lost his parrot (called Funky) at the start of 1999 when it flew out of the window and in the interview he said 'When making the tune, my parrot ran away. So I meant Funky get in!'.

-Whilst Derrick McKenzie was on his honeymoon, Sola Akingbola had to stand in and play the drums at the NRJ music awards which were held in Cannes, France.

-The contributed track for the Titan A.E. soundtrack was originally going to be called "Space Disco" before it was changed to "Everybody's Going To The Moon." Apparently when the track was complete, Jay was so excited he called the staff at Java records to play it to them down the phone.

-Jay said that Jools Holland had been working with him in AFO.

-A Funk Odyssey was originally going to be called 2001- A Funk Odyssey.

-Jay said he doesn't want to work with any other artists again (apart from Jools Holland) after a bad experience working with Bootsy Collins.

-Jay wanted to put around 13 tracks on AFO, but Sony wanted 10.

-Jay was supposed to sing in one of the Roger Sanches songs of the album First Contact, but with the release of AFO, nothing happened.

-Derrick Mc Kenzie once worked in a store selling lingerie.

- Jay said that the track Main Vein contains samples from the following three recordings - We're On The Right Track (Ultra High Frequency), Funkytown (Lipps Inc), and Imagination (Whispers) however they didn't get permission to use the samples. The first pressings of the album contained the samples but later on the album was released, this time without the samples.

-He wanted to release a live album but the record company wasn't interested.

-Elton John and Jay Kay were planning to duet at 2002's Brit Awards show, singing Elton's classic hit from 1983 I'm Still Standing.

-Jay said that the video for 'You Give Me Something': 'That video is crap. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. My original idea was tampered with by everyone from the record company to management'.

-Jay had between 3 and 5 different version of 'Love Foolosophy'.

-The intro of 'Corner Of The Earth' was going to be a different song called 'Cannabis'. But they were with no time, so they put it at the beggining and at the end of COTE.

There you go. I hope you had a long and interesting reading cause it was a ride to the past to me. Don't you think the title of the Remix album ('Interpretations From Beyond') is better for the new album than Dynamite?? Hehe, just an idea. Please put your thoughts in here,

Bye,
D! (diego)

Yeah nice info Diego. For all of you "Dynamite" haters out there, one of the tidbits said Synkronized was originally named Boogie Forever, so I guess there's still a chance the name will be changed hehe.

Hmm, I thought it was a coffeshop in Holland or around there and he would be a silent partner.

There are only short informations available about that point:

In Maxim Fashion magazine(UK) interview spring/summer 2002 "I'm lazy, I'm absolutely crazy..." it was said that Jay "fully intends to open 'The Space Cowboy Coffee Shop' "

Earlier in March April some french articles and articles from Netherland mention that Jay wants to open a coffee shop like known from Netherlands somewhery in London / Hackney for free smoking of marihuana..and that Scotland Yard had answered, if he would try they would prevent that...you can find some articles with google...but not in English.

But I think the whole thing was just some spontanious idea of Jay that was never really planned...may be just a promotion gag of Jay... or a "big mouth" just to offend nasty reporters...hehehe Laughing

Hello there,

Well he always have plans, remember the 'Synkronized' single? Or the remix album? Or the clothes thing?

Always has something to do, and for some reason he doesn't.
