Re: What is Jay's part in Jamiroquai music?

Hello everyone!
I'm quite new here and I don't know if the subject I'm putting has already been on this HUUUDGE forum or not. If it was.. well, foregive me.
Jamiroquai is being regarded as "one-man band". We know that Jay is a songwriter, singer, lyricswriter, producer, aranger, recording master, (his own stylist and public relations specialist ) ...and many more. But is He EVERYTHING ? I mean... how, but reeally, the songs are made? We all know that He has "the brain", but NObody could do it all by himself.
And, most of all,he would have to have (oh my god,is my English correct? ) enormous theoretical knowledge. Does he play any instrument? I've read about his mother, did she teach him music? Where does he know all this from? A lot of questions...
best regards |
Ah but he could do it all by himself.... a prime example would be Prince
Both "Purple Rain" Sountrack and "Controversy" were made a year before they were released (in his studio) with Prince playing all the instruments himself. To go even furthur...When the Doves Cry was actually made 3 years before the Movie and Soundtrack was made. So it is possible for 1 man to be that creative. _________________ I used to worry about the future

Yes, You are right but notice one thing: Prince can play everything- piano, bass, guitar,drums... that's why he could do it all by himself. and Jay...err.. no. easy |

That's true...but I'm saying theory...one man can be a band unto himself in the studio. _________________ I used to worry about the future

Hi people!
A couple more quotes on the topic:
| Quote: |
| It's essential for me to get the music out of my head. I come up with the lines and Toby scores them for me. That's how it works. I'm a musician who can't play, I suppose. Somebody who's got to interpret his ideas through people who CAN play, but I'd don't think that makes me any less of a musician. Sometimes I yearn to be recognized for some of the music I make. I'm worried people will think I'm just some c!@t who stands at the front. (Jay Kay, 1993) |
| Quote: |
| I refuse to sit here and let someone say "So you just write the lyrics, don't you?" No, I don't. I think of all the f!@#ing parts. And construct it so. All in my head. When the brass guys came to the studio to record Synkronized, I was working on that tune. Hummed what I wanted. But they played something different. I said "What's that?" They said "You can't put a minor thing next to a major." I said, "Yeah, but your version sounds shit. Just play what I'm singing. I can hear it all in my head." And I was right! (Jay Kay, 1999) |
| Quote: |
| It is just a process of me and Jay sitting down at the piano and either he will have a melody or I will have some chords or he will have a verse and I will have a chorus. All our best hits have been that way. (Toby Smith, 2002) |
Enjoy! |

I think I have the same problem as Jay!!! perhaps it should be called Jayism:
When a person is unable to play an instrument but knows exactly what he wants in his head.
I have the same thing....I've written hundreds of lyrics and I know what each sounds like in my head...I just don't have anyone around to help me get it out of my head and recorded.
That's it Doctor! I have Jayism! lol _________________ I used to worry about the future

hahahahahahah
good idea
but hey... why doesn´t jay learn an instrument.... it´s no big problem....
but perhaps he ´s afraid of loosing his "talent" of hearing a song in his head....
but i think it´s sensationell how he can tell the other bandmembers how a song has to sound like .... so though the band is "bought" (they hadn´t been friends or something like that) they do a fantastic job.... sending gooooodddd vibrations...
