tough question, because jay kay has the contract with sony, and he pays the musicians, also he "thinks" out the songs, he said in an interview something like that he could play the song in his head that he was looking for, hearing all the instruments etcetc and them humm it to the band and they play, so i guess they're his tools, but toby smith had a big part of the songwriting (i heard something that rob has that job now?) so he think he got a little extra dough.
but sure, jamiroquai isn't the same band that it used to be, the sound has changed dramatically (also having with jaykay wanting to move forward with the sound). from what i understand alot of people miss the stuartzender-tobysmith-simonkatz-djdzire-sound _________________

Dramatically is maybe a bit strong... Listen to MST, the sound is very good and funky (even if they turned a little bit to rock).
Indeed, some value added instruments such as horns, DJ or Didjeridoo disappeared and have been exchanged by digital synths but what Jamiroquai makes with it is amazing ! The sounds are really worked and the arragements are more and more beautiful.
I think if Jamiroquai had kept its 90's sound, maybe they couldn't be very creative and innovative.
Well that's my opinion
However, like many of you, I miss Zender and Smith.... _________________

well appearently the 80's/90's are back in fashion but yes sadly since all the original members besides jay kay have left i wonder if jay thinks "this is THE band jamiroquai" "or jamiroquai is me" guess we will have to find out

Since some years I bought a book called Jamiroquai from A to Z, published only in France.
I translated some parts of that book that explain how is made up the band, and the beginner
| Quote: |
Jay Kay is locked up during a few months, in order to give rise to his expensive project, it is thus in a small room of Ealing that Jamiroquai takes form. Influenced by the b-boys graffiti, Jay Kay draws the logo emblematic of the group and finds an adequate name which combines sonority Indians, with the name "iroquai" and the concept of "jam", inherent in the funk and the jazz, two of the underlying influences of Jamiroquai. His mother helps him to design the hats which will make the reputation of the group. This project is not other than an immediate extension of his personality.
Generally it is Jay Kay who composes the majority of the songs of Jamiroquai. Nevertheless he is always helped of the musicians of the band.... Even if he signed on his only name with his record compagny, logically Jay kay divides up the royalties with the musicians who help him to compose the tunes of Jamiroquai.
Jay Kay, singer and leader of Jamiroquai, Inevitably his name merges with that of Jamiroquai. Jay kay remains the driving force behind the group and it is him which signed a contract making of the remainder of the group his employees. It is him which carries the can, it is him which drives the sports cars and it is still him which pays the 50 people who depend on Jamiroquai. |

This is how I see it. I would say that Jason Kay IS Jamiroquai. But at the same time he can't do it alone without his band. If Jay Kay was no longer around (heaven forbid) Jamiroquai would cease to exist. It is true with groups like The Rolling Stones(Mick Jagger), Pet Shop Boys(Neil Tennant).
It would even be silly for Jay to come out with a solo album. I am more confident of that than any group I know. _________________ IT'S A PLANETARY....GOOD VIBE ZONE.....

I suppose this wasn't your intention Edgar but when I read the M with capital letters, the particle "mi" of spanish (equivalent to 'my' in english)came to my mind... it added the word a very nice selfish touch... and since we are in this subject... hehehe... I think you get the idea.
Anyway, I don't know if you have talked about this before but I can't help noticing that the official site's title is: "Jay Kay's Official Web site"... and what's most interesting... in other places of the site you can read things like these:
WELCOME TO J.MUSIC,
AN ENHANCED DISCOGRAPHY
OF JAMIROQUAI'S MUSIC. HERE
YOU'LL FIND LYRICS, SAMPLES
AND VIDEO CLIPS FOR ALL THE
BAND'S RELEASES TO DATE.
Conclusion: Even the guys that "work" there don't know if they are talking about a band or a man. _________________ We're going to a funktion yeah yeah yeah |

Just want to add Jamiroquai wouldn't be the same without Jay. I really like the others bandmembers can do but Jay keep up the band and probably is the spirit who make jamiroquai can be jamiroquai.
