Half The Man
i can`t stop listening to that song...it`s so beautiful
i was actually thinking about jk`s songs which have rather emotionally stained lyrics yet an upbeat melody to complete it. to me, those songs are just magical because i can just somehow feel his character through them. like eventhough he is hurt or confused *lyrics*, he is so sure *melody*.
it seems like his damaged lyrics epitomise his feelings and his inner core and the accompanying melody just reflects how he wants to or does deal with it. with some sort of strength.
normally when i listen to rather sad songs, the lyrics fit in tune with the melody and automatically ur emotional side of your being takes over and your not really listening to what the author`s message is.
i don`t know if anyone feels the same way...
it`s like life, there are always two sides to acknowledge. eventhough one may be hurt there is some other factor which uplifts one, even if we sometimes are too blind to acknowledge them.
the songs are of true mastership _________________ ~ only tears left to stain

I just listened to "Half the man" this morning on my way to the office and it alway makes me blue and happy at one time. Maybe that's because the happy mood of "Stillness in time" is still there. The lyrics of "Half the man" are rather sad but the melody is so delightful that you just can't get blue about it. And I alway have to think of the video - Jay lookes so relaxed, happy mooded and cute in it so it can't be a sad song.

Arrrghhhhhhhhh: Blackxcrow, you are killing me!
This is just how I feel.
You are so right : this duality of the songs do give them an intensity and a humanity which only true artists can develop.
I recognize the "strenght" you are talking about in the song "Black Capricorn Day" too. The music is powerful and carrys on its own driving force. The text, though, describes someone who is having a bad day. But there is no sadness or depression in the text. Only the will (almost the rage ?) to overcome this bad phase. GREAT GREAT GREAT.
As you say: one "can feel (JK's) character through the songs".
About "Half the Man":
I remember JK telling in an interview that love songs are the hardest lyrics to write. The danger being to fall into those cliches that you hear a thousand time a day on the radios like the boring sentence "I will always love you".
JK's "I want to spend a lifetime with you" is much more original and romantic.
I do not share your and Butterfly's views about the lyrics of "Half the Man", though. For me they sound extremely positive, full of hope in the future .
Listen how the keyboard sounds: It could be almost mistaken with a wedding melody in a church. The sentence "every bird will sing our love tune" almost approaches the style of a fairy tale.
I remember I used to keep on listening "Half the man" over an over too . _________________ ?Now I've got that sunshine in my life? |

I found some information about the video for you!
| Quote: |
Half The Man
Director
Paul Boyd & Jim Gible
Description - Release 1994
"Half the Man" is one of those videos that Jay was in a hurry like some other videos. There was only one take of this video and it came out a smooth kinda in and out video. The video was shot in black and white just like the "Blow Your Mind" video. It was a video also that only had Jay in it just staring at the camera the whole time moving his face back and forth like you are trying to catch him and tell him "Stand still Jay!."
There are 2 different versions to this video. The U.K. version has Jay and once and a while smoke clears his face very cool looking and a couple is shown making out and that continues all through the video.
The U.S. version which is mainly focusing on JK just shows him the whole time like I explained above. The background was a black to gray gradient which was pretty cool indeed too about this video. |
...hm... I only know the U.S. version of the video. Does anyone know where to find the UK version?

i actually agree with u sunrayvibe..half the man does sound positiv and that's what I'm saying lol...the fact about his sad lyrics which when you read are kinda depressing and emotional but when listening to the actual tune, it sounds hopeful. I also think the way he uses his voice adds to the positiveness somehow he has the most beautiful voice!!
thank you so much cosmicmouse for looking up the info..now doesn't he look scrumptous in that video?! lol *yum*

Thank you CosmicMouse for putting those shots of the video.
My typing keyboard gets a little wet because I can't help slavering when I look at them, but it's OK .
"epitomize" and "scrumptious". Wowwwww. Those words knocked me off .
I had to check in the dictionary . Now they belong to my favorite english words. And they describe the meaning so well. Blackxcrow. _________________ ?Now I've got that sunshine in my life? |
