High Times is a musician. I can't believe he's wrong.
Can someone clear things up? The one is saying Matt hits the wrong notes, the other says Matt plays beautiful. I can't hear it (I'm enjoying the music, Space Cowboy too), so does Matt hit the wrong notes, is it just improvising or what? |

Matt is a master of rhodes piano technique,
listen to Verona DVD if you have doubts!!!
his style is spectacular, amazing!!!
he is great in playing synts as well!!!
like Toby he plays so many keys lines all alone!!!
its too difficult, but he can do it perfectly!!!!!!!
So many blind fan boys. This isn't worth the effort. |
Come on, guys. What's that fuzz and fight all about? We all have different opinions. No need to hack at each other.
I don't think High Times is just a "blind fan". If you would check the other topics here around you would know that he is an excellant musician himself. He can surely judge the quality of other musicians.
If he got another opinion than you. that's his right.
We should all not judge the band for their first concert. Like it was said before by others, the band has to get some routine again playing together, especially with new members and new songs. And whatever they will do, there will always be fans, who don't like something.
As far as we not all have heard the new album and have heard reviews of the summer live gigs, we should give the band a chance and support them.
Different opinions are good. They help us, to view things from different sides and gain new perspectives. _________________

the thing is not about me being a musician,
we see things different with Phil.. as i see he wants to criticise
a perfect musician Matt which i think is a cool amazing performer, you guys try to guess why he wants to do it.. i really dont know
as well as i dont know why he doesnt like new stuff and this new version of Space Cowboy which is superb!!!
if Phil speaks about one note on the end of repeating moogy phrase..
only one single note, the other parts - are superb HQ great outstanding playing!!!
i have to tell why dont you think about the difficulties of live performance?
it can occur because of bad monitoring at that moment - low volume or
too loud volume and matt doesnt hear well what he's playing, he only see what he plays. when such thing happens during a gig
and you use a tone wheel - you will never produce the right note - its not like if
you just play keys.
or because he has to do 2 too difficult things simualteneously - play a chord on rhodes piano and play lead on synth.
Phil dont you think its strange to suppose Matt, one of the best
english keyboard players cant play the right tone with a wheel?
Please first download at least 5- 10 bootlegs with Matt's
participation listen to them and only after that we'll discuss everything!
one more thing, his lines on studio tracks we've heard
are amazing and very special. as well as the tracks!
matt is outstanding and unique keyboard player !!!!!!!

who said that? did it ever listen about improvisation? our free jazz? i can understand that no...
What gonna say next? that in TWM live , that some versions got 10-20 minutes, hit the wrong notes .
They don't have to follow the tab dudes , this isn't a britney or madona concert. _________________ hooked up |

i have listened most of the concerts where matt is playing (and of course earlier ones), i'm also a jazz listener and i also know about music.
i have heard matt playing bad solos, wrong notes and wrong tempos, and you can't say: hey! that didn't sounded wrong, it was a jazz touch!
no, it was wrong.
anyway, it's clear that all that keys from space cowboy played in this new live versions are quite the same as what toby did but in another tone (i also heard toby playing this way) but this time it's sounds awful.
about the backing vocals, it was quite clear for me that jay wanted some help in the singing since 2001 tour but this is too much, somebody said it before and i think it's right: why they have to add pointless lines from the backing vocals??? _________________

that was me!! that was me!!!
heheh i agree with you on that man...
what i don't agree is calling Matt a bad keyboardist...
he's great, but of course not better than "Mr. Toby Smith on the keyboards" hehehe
those backing vocals are singing too much... i think that the next disc those backing vocals are going to be the main vocals... and jay the listener... hehehehe _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

i've been listening to a lot of live recordings as well, and I know a thing or two about harmony, and I've heard very few errors.
maybe you can point to something specific so we don't twatter about like this!! _________________ i left my funk in san francisco

You guys need to look more carefully at what I said. I wasn't calling Matt a terrible keyboardist, I said one particular technique was bad and sample choice was downright awful in one song. Overall his playing is quite good (I play the keyboard myself) but his work in Space Cowboy is no where near Toby's or what I'd even consider acceptable. |
