Im Video zu seiner neuen Single „Feels Just Like It Should“ zeigt er sich aber wieder gewohnt wild: Der Jamiroquai-Frontmann spielt vier verschiedene Charaktere, darunter eine Frau. Hausbesuch beim „King of Funk“! Auf seinem Anwesen nördlich von London spielt Jason Kay (35) mit seinen zwei Schäferhunden oder probt mit seiner Band Jamiroquai („The Return Of The Space Cowboy“) – mit der er immer gleichgesetzt wird – für die bevorstehende Welttour. Nach vier Jahren Pause läßt der Brite es wieder krachen: „Dynamite“ heißt sein neues explosives Werk. Jay Kay empfing zum Interview in seinem Park. BamS: Wir treffen dich hier allein an. Du scheinst wieder Single zu sein . . . Jay Kay: Stimmt. Meine letzte richtig ernsthafte Beziehung hatte ich mit Denise van Outen, das ist aber sicher schon vier Jahre her. Du bist auch bestimmt nicht einfach in einer Beziehung . . . Jay Kay (überlegt): Hm, ich denke, daß mein Job nicht gerade geeignet ist, um eine Beziehung am Laufen zu halten. Wenn ich nach einem Konzert von der Bühne komme, ist es vielleicht 1 Uhr morgens – wie soll ich dann meine Freundin anrufen? Und was ist mit Talulah, nach der ein Song benannt ist? Jay Kay: Dieses Mädchen gibt es wirklich, mit ihm hatte ich eine On-and-off-Beziehung. Aber es ist, wie es ist: Irgendwo wartete ständig ein Flugzeug . . . Du singst auch, daß sie dir fehlte, um „I love you“ zu sagen. Jay Kay: Du meinst den Song „Seven Days In Sunny June“ – der handelt davon, wie man über eine gescheiterte Liebe hinwegkommen will. Das kennt doch jeder: Du schwärmst für ein Girl, und sie sagt: „Laß uns Freunde sein!“ Der Satz geht gar nicht . . . Jay Kay: Genau, besser ist doch: „Laß uns keine Freunde sein, uns ausziehen und sofort ins Bett gehen!“ Oder? Kommst du immer so schnell zur Sache? Jay Kay: Für so schnodderig und frech hältst du mich also? Nein, das bin ich nicht! Ich bin eigentlich schüchtern – ob du es glaubst oder nicht! Wenn ich eine Frau wirklich mag, trau’ ich mich nicht, sie anzusprechen. Du vermittelst jedenfalls einen anderen Eindruck . . . Jay Kay: Wenn ich eine Frau mag, sag’ oder mach’ ich ständig das Falsche – plötzlich ist man wieder wie ein Teenager. Wenn ich fies wäre, könnte ich sagen, daß du dich auf deinem neuen Album überhaupt nicht weiterentwickelt hast . . . Jay Kay: Es gibt Schlimmeres. Meine Band und ich finden jedenfalls, daß die Melodien, die Grooves und die Phrasierung anders sind – und der Sound ist gewaltiger. Für mich klingt das neue Album von Destiny’s Child auch genauso wie früher – aber jeder hat seinen eigenen Style. Also gibst du mir recht, daß du dich wie immer anhörst? Jay Kay: Schon. Aber wenn wir jetzt plötzlich was ganz anderes machen würden, würde doch jeder sagen, daß ich versuche, jemanden zu kopieren. Aber ganz ehrlich: Nach dem Shit, den ich durchlebt habe, bin ich schon froh, daß wir dieses Album überhaupt fertiggekriegt haben . . . Was für „Shit“ meinst du? Jay Kay: Daß ich das Koksen aufgegeben habe. Seit anderthalb Jahren nehme ich das Zeug nicht mehr. Ich mußte damit aufhören, ich war irgendwann an einem Punkt angelangt, an dem ich kaputt war, es nicht nur um mich ging, sondern ich auch andere in Mitleidenschaft zog. Wann hast du die Entscheidung getroffen? Jay Kay: Das war im November 2003. Wir waren in Costa Rica – hast du den Track „Hot Tequila Brown“ gehört? Ja, darin fragst du, wie viele Sonnenaufgänge ein Mann hintereinander sehen kann, ohne zu schlafen . . . Jay Kay: Ich habe es dreimal geschafft. Am dritten Morgen saß ich am Strand, neben mir eine Flasche braunen Tequila, der schon von der Hitze heiß war. „Hot Tequila Brown“ war der letzte Song, den ich auf Koks geschrieben habe. Aber wie hast du den Absprung geschafft? Jay Kay: Bei unserem zweiten und dritten Album haben wir in der Band alle gekokst. So waren wir damals drauf. Wir koksten, gingen auf Partys und suchten uns ein paar Girls aus. Aber Ende 2003 war ich der einzige von uns, der es noch nahm – und ich wußte, ich muß aufhören, sonst würden wir unser Album nicht fertigkriegen. Und was ist dein Ersatz? Jay Kay: Meine neue Droge ist, das Leben zu genießen! Und natürlich meine Musik! Wenn ich irgendwann mein Best-of-Album aufgenommen habe, dann möchte ich etwas lernen, wovon ich immer schon geträumt habe. Und das wäre? Jay Kay: Ich möchte ein Ultraleichtflugzeug fliegen können – das ist schnell und leicht. Ich finde die Vorstellung großartig, über Australien zu gleiten und dort zu landen, wo ich will. Vielleicht ist auch irgendwann mal eine Familie ein Ersatz. Das würde mich sicher glücklich machen. Bis dahin scheinen dich auch deine Autos glücklich zu machen – ich habe acht Garagen gezählt . . . Jay Kay: Neben meinen zwei Audi, die ich als meine täglichen Fahrzeuge benutze, habe ich so etwa zehn ernsthafte Autos. Was heißt denn „ernsthafte“ Autos? Jay Kay: Na solche, die nicht an Wert verlieren. Etwa der alte Mercedes, ein 300 SL Roadster, ein 63er Bentley, ein alter Aston Martin, ein Enzo Ferrari, 550 Ferrari, Gran Turismo Monegato Ferrari – und ein Maserati A60CS, den gibt es nur zweimal auf der Welt! Meinen Lamborghini Mirror – eins von sieben Exemplaren weltweit – habe ich verkauft. Er sah zwar phantastisch aus, aber fuhr sich wie ein Traktor, man konnte kaum den zweiten Gang einlegen. Er fuhr sich wie ein Schwein (sagt er auf deutsch). Aber du bist ja auch für deinen versauten Fahrstil bekannt – erst kürzlich hast du deinen Lappen verloren. Jay Kay: Das war in Schottland, ich fuhr in meinem Geländewagen im Nirgendwo 160 km/h. Und es wurde eine Riesenstory daraus gemacht, weil sie meinten, daß ich ein Rockstar und sooo crazy bin. Das ist doch bescheuert! Ich kann gut Auto fahren, ich fahre sicher, egal ob bei Regen, Eis oder Schnee – durch ganz Europa. Der Polizist, der mir die Punkte gegeben hat, fährt höchstens von zu Hause bis zur Arbeit – die Schotten haben wirklich den A . . . offen! _________________ it´s only once or twice you´re in line with mr. moon !!

But in the video of his new single “Feels just like it should” he shows himself wild again: The Jamiroquai frontman plays four different characters himself, including a woman. Home visit at the “King of Funk”! At his mansion north of London Jason Kay (35) plays with his two shepherd dogs or rehearses with his band Jamiroquai (“The return of the space cowboy”) – with whom he is always identified – for the forthcoming world tour. After a four years break the Brit fires again: “Dynamite” is the name of his new explosive work. Jay welcomes for an interview in his park. BamS: We meet you here alone. You seem to be Single again… Jay Kay: Right. My last serious relationship I had with Denise van Outen, but that is already about four years ago. You are surely no easy character in a relationship… Jay Kay (thinking): Hm, I think that my job is not especially suited to keep a relationship running. When I am coming from stage after a concert, it is about 1.00 in the morning – how should I then give my girl friend a phone call? And what is about Talulah, after her a song is named? Jay Kay: This girl is real, we had an on- and off relationship. But it is as it is.: Somewhere always an airplane is waiting… You are singing also that you miss her, to say “I love you”. Jay Kay: You talk about the song Seven Sunny Days In June” – that is about how to overcome a failed love. Everybody knows that: You are crazy about a girl, and she says: “Let us be friends!” That sentence does not work at all… Jay Kay: Exactly, it would be better: “Don’t let us be friends, let’s strip and go to bed immediately!” Or? You are always getting to the point that fast? Jay Kay: So you think I am that cocky and cheeky? No I am not like that! Actually I am shy – if you believe it or not! If I really like a woman, I don’t dare to approach and talk to her. Anyway you are giving another impression… Jay Kay: If I like a woman, I am saying and doing always the wrong things – suddenly you are a teenager again. If I would be nasty, I could say, that you have not developed at all on your new album… Jay Kay: There are worse things. My band and I think, that the melodies, the grooves and the phrasing are different – and the sound is more bombastic. For me too the new album of Destiny’s Child sounds the same like before – but everyone has it’s own style. So you agree with me, that you sound like ever? Jay Kay:Yes. But if we would do now something completely different, everyone would say, that I am trying to copy someone. But honestly: After that shit I have gone through, I am glad at all, that we managed to finish this album anyway… What kind of “Shit” do you mean? Jay Kay: That I have quit cocaine. Since one and a half year I am clean. I had to stop, I was at a point, were I was wrecked, and it was not only my matter, but others were affected by it too. When did you make that decision? Jay Kay: That was in November 2003. We were in Costa Rica – have you heard the track “Hot Tequila Brown”? Yes, in that song you ask how many sunrises a man can see without sleeping… Jay Kay: I have reached that three times. On the third morning I was sitting at the beach, beside me a bottle of brown Tequila, which was already hot from the heat. “Hot Tequila Brown” was the song, that I wrote being on cocaine. But how could you quit? Jay Kay: When we were doing our second and third album we all used cocaine in band. That was how we were that time. We took cocaine, going on parties, and chose some girls. But at the end of 2003 I was the only one who still took cocaine – and I knew, I had to quit, otherwise we would never finish the album. And what is your replacement for it? Jay Kay: My new drug is to enjoy life! And naturally my music! At the point sometime after I have done my Best-of Album, then I would like to learn something I have ever dreamt of. And that is? Jay Kay: I would like to be able to fly an ultra light plane – that is quick and light. I love the impression of gliding over Australia and landing there wherever I want. May be a family will be sometime the replacement. That would surely make me happy. But until then your cars seem to make you happy – I have counted eight garages… Jay Kay: Besides of my two Audi, which I use as my daily normal cars, I have about ten serious cars. What does “serious” cars mean? Jay Kay: well, such cars, that loose no worth. For example the old Mercedes, a 300 SL Roadster, a 63 Bentley, an old Aston Martin, an Enzo Ferrari, 550 Ferrari, Gran Turismo Monegato Ferrari – and a Maserati A60CS, that one exists only two times in the world! My Lamborghini Mirror – one of seven worldwide – I have sold. He looked damn fantastic, but he drove like a tractor, you could hardly manage to get the second gear in. It drove like a pig (he says this in German). But you are also know for your “piggy” driving style – only shortly you lost your licence. Jay Kay: That was in Scotland, I was driving in my range van in the nowhere land about 160 km/h. And they made a big story about that, cause they said, that I am a rock star and so crazy. But that is crazy! I am a good driver, I am driving confidently, no matter if it rains or is snowing – through all Europe. That policeman, that was giving me the points, only drives from his home to work – the Scots really have their A.. off! _________________
