My review - Jamiroquai @ B! Live, London, 3rd July 05
..........................................................
Saturday, 2nd July 2005
I am leaving the house at 4:45 am. Man, it's really early in the morning and I am bloody tired - haven't slept that much.
My stepfather is so nice to drive me to Hannover, where we pick up Bear and then drive to the airport.
We are in time and ready to go! Haven't I forgotten anything? Soapbubbles, camera, creditcard, passport, jamirotalk-shirt, telephone numbers of the people we are going to meet?
Sitting in the plain just before it lifts off, I remember that I actually have a kinda fear of flying. While Bear is holding my hand, some doubts are running through my head for some seconds... Am I crazy? I am flying to London to see a band. Why can't I wait until they come to Germany? I am leaving my family for 3 days... will they come along with everything without me? Will I be able to communitcate in english?
After bursting through the clouds, I put on my iPod with Seven Days in Sunny June. My doubts are gone and I am wondering how many and which tracks they will play at the concert.
Later in the hotel, we are watching Live8 on TV. Unbelievable that it is just 3 km away from us, but unfortuantely we haven't got tickets, so we enjoy it here - at our new "home" for 3 days, lying on the bed and "recharge our batteries" together with Petra, another german friend of Bear we have met a few hours ago in London.
After relaxing we are arranging a meet with some Jamiroquai fans: Ms P (Jan), jamirocat (Angela), Little H (Heather) with her son (Abd Al-Azeez) and David and Sharon Rowe. We are spending the whole evening at a bar at Covent Garden, chatting, eating, drinking, laughing and getting more and more excited about the concert! What a great worm up for tomorrow!

Ugh, what a night. I couldn't sleep at all. Has been a mixture of a headache, not being able to calm down, Bear's snorring and the loud noises from the traffic at Kings Cross - in front of the window. I am totally knackered!
After a very unsatisfying breakfast, we are setting off towards Clapham Common. A few text messages from Ms.P, Little H and jamirocat are reaching us regularily, keeping us updated, how many people are queueing already at the entrance. They managed to be the first there. Great! So, the chances for the front row seems to be good!
After we are getting of the tube and standing at the cross-roads, searching for the right direction to the venue, a guy comes to us and asks: "Hey, you are the german guys, aren't you?" "err... yes...?!" "CosmicBear and CosmicMouse, right?"
Wow, we are surprised. Someone recognized us!! We found out that it was no other than Andy (Andrew Moulton) from Australia! We know him from jamline and I realized that we have swapped CD's once, a few years back! How small is this planet??? Just great!
At the entrance it continues! We are meeting people from France (one of them is Stu'z from jamirotalk!) and Seko, webmaster of jamirosite.com with friends. (Sorry, I couldn't remember all your names... you know who you are!)
While queueing and meeting Ezbe (Erica) and Queen Of Funk (Stella) and finally "Officer" Serge, we are hearing Jamiroquai soundchecking. That brings new motivation and power to all of us! I am still a bit nervous, because we still have to get our tickets. Bear promises, if there will be problems with the tickets and we would have to stay outside, that ticketmaster will burn the next day! They'd better give us the tickets immediately!
Finally, the gates are opening and although Bear has no confirmation number, we are getting our tickets... and rush to the stage! Bingo! First row is ours! But still 6 hours to go until Jamiroquai! Ugh!
So we are starting to spread around our Jamirotalk flyers and invite people to visit our community. Big thanks to Ms.P and Little H for doing such a good promotion!
Then Saffy7 (Claire) is joining us. The Jamily is growing and growing!
The concerts begin. I really enjoy the first band (forgot the name). Charismatic singer with a great voice. Nice one! Amy Winehouse who comes afterwards, has a nice voice, but the performance is a bit lame. She isn't thrilling me and I am kinda glad when she is done.
I don't like Flavor Flav. Rap/HipHop isn't my music at all, but it's still funny to watch their performance. Us3 are coming on stage and do a good performance. They are funky and I really like those brass tunes! Then the Brand New Heavies are playing! Mind-blowing! I am really enjoying them, singing along and starting to dance. I am spotting Rob, Derrick and Paul backstage while the BNH are performing! Yipiee! Now I am warmed up for the masters! The Brand New Heavies are leaving and I am watching the guys preparing the stage for Jamiroquai. How exciting! They are fixing the setlist in front of Jay's microphone and from what I can see, it seems to be a veery loong list. Could it be? Woohooo... I cannot wait any longer! Come on, we have been waiting for so long!!!
Finally: The intro (Electric Mistress - not live) starts and the band is coming on stage, taking up their positions! OH, great! When everyone is on his place, Jay jumps on the stage and the crowd is screaming and going mad! Canned Heat is the first track and the beginning of an amazing concert! And what a great mixture of old and new stuff is following. Space Cowboy, Cosmic Girl, an amazing Revolution 1993, Little L.... Then Too Young Too Die, how cool!
I am busy with making bubbles and photos. When the wind comes from the right direction, some bubbles even reach the stage and burst near the musicians. Jay even makes it and catches one bubble! Wohooo!! The people who know me are squeaking.
Paul Turner is really good, even in the old tunes. It's a pleasure to hear and see him playing the bass. Very powerfull and groovy. And he seems to have a lot of fun. The same with the other bandmembers. Great atmosphere on stage and on the ground. One big phat party is going on.
I am happy that the new dynamite tracks they are performing, do sound amazing. Electric Mistress and Feels Just Like It Should are really great live!
They play a rather fast version of Corner Of The Earth (can you imagine who I am thinking of right now?) and then Music Of The Mind, which is also great to hear live for the first time!
After Love FoolosophyJay is asking the crowd if they want Mr Moon or High Times... Mr Moon wins and there we go! Fantastic!
Highlights for me are Mr Moon, Dynamite, Butterfly and Use The Force, which really rocks! I am thinking of Sola's words and remember that this is his favourite track to play live! And you can really see that he is enjoying it!
Jay is in a really good mood. Smiling a lot, chatting between the songs, being happy about the sun finally coming out at the horizion. The perfect situation to play Seven Days In Sunny June!
Jay is making clear that he has no good opinion about Bush and he is claiming that we should get rid of him.
One thing I notice: At the beginning of Starchild there is a bassline, which is not played by Paul but by Matt! Paul's second bassline is set in later in the second phrase. That was kinda surprising for me because I thought Paul would play from the beginning. (But when I later heard the track from the CD, I noticed that it is played the same way on the CD. At least I think so...)
I really enjoy to see Nathan Haines playing flute, sax and clarinett during several tracks. Great musician!
We are having so much fun, when they do Alright. And then Jay sais, that they unfortunately can do just another 2 songs, because it is late. Oh, no. So they play Virtual Insanity which is amazing and then rock the house with a final powerfull Deeper Underground. Fantastic!
Unbelievable: They did 20 songs! I cannot believe that it is already over now.
We are meeting a bunch of fans after the gig in a near pub called "The Alexandra" and share our enthusiasm, feelings and opinions about that great concert until they are closing and we have to say goodbye to a lot of people! Uuh, what a night!
Back in the hotel Bear and I are still stunned and overwhelmed with emotions. After talking for a while about the whole day, the setlist and the great people we have met (and missed), we are falling like stones into our beds and fall happily asleep.
Monday, 4th July 2005
We are meeting again Ms.P, Little H, her son, jamirocat and Serge in the city. Serge guides us to his parking place, because he wants to show us his self-made dynamite hat. The way though "piss-alley" - a stinky way to the park garage - was really worth it, because Serge's hat looks amazing. Our reaction when he shows it to us - a united "Oooooooooooouuuuh!!!" We force him to go to a lighter place and put it on, so that we can take photos. He is posing for us and we make some great shots of Jay's "twin".
We let the day fade out with sitting in a bar, eating and chatting, later a little bit of shopping and a visit at Madame Toussaud, which has some scary moments. I am still shivering when i think of the dark path with the "serial murders" especially the one who didn't want to let me go. Scary!! I think Bear should still have some bruises, because I squashed his arm so much! Sorry, Bear!
Then the time comes to say good bye, what I sense kinda hard. The whole weekend I had the feeling of meeting another family of mine. We were one big group of totally different people, but with one thing in common: the concentrated passion for that one band called Jamiroquai. And that made the whole experience so special!
Huge thanks to all the people we have met during our time in London. (Sorry if I forgot to mention some names!) I hope we can all stay in contact through the forum, emails and maybe further meetings in the future! Jamiroquai fans are the best!!!
At 8:30 pm we are sitting in the plain again, I turn on my iPod... I am in the mood for Talullah...
A bit sad that it is all over now, but happy at the same time, because I am aware to see my little family very soon. I really missed them and we have a great reunion with some tears of happiness of my older son Marlin. Soo cute!! I am glad to be back... and you know what? I also missed Jamirotalk!!
I am looking forward to reading all your reviews. Who did make photos of my bubbles?

Oh Meike, your review is absolutely fantastic. I had tears in my eyes - we all had the most fabulous weekend, which was made even better because we were surrounded by friends.
I squeaked when Jay caught your bubble lol. I did get some photos of the bubbles onstage - but the quality of my photos is so poor you cannot pick the bubbles out . I will have a tweak around and see if I can get a better focus.
Thanks for all of the wonderful photos and your words - I'm going to read this whenever I want to remember really happy times. It was lovely to meet you and the bear, you are both so lovely. .
I've got my review and photos online - but I haven't quite finished yet, I think mine will be like "war and peace"!

What an amazing setlist....I can only hope that the boys make it stateside with a set like that My jealousy for all those who went is complete. Great mixture of old and new, popular & obscure, truly something for everybody.
p.s. any other old-fart fans catch the BNH set & recognize any of the old tunes? |
